To intensely dislike Keir Starmer

1000 replies

LemonyTicket · 27/09/2023 00:42

I can't stand Tories.
The current Tories are the worst

But I still intensely dislike Keir Starmer and will probably vote Green.

I find him phony, with no vision, like a terrible 6th form prefect. And to be honest his whole front bench are dreadful. Wes Streeting nauseates me.

Is it just me?

Labour are shit with money - look at Birmingham.

you're also wrong about that

But then you're one of those who's going on about 'the good old days' without realising how shit they were for very many people. When my grandparents were alive, they spoke very eloquently about life without the medical advances and treatments we have now; they both lost siblings from illnesses we can now diagnose and prevent in ways we take for granted.

You probably think those losses made them 'resilient'.

Labour are much better at running the economy than voters think – new research

We looked at 100 years of Tory and Labour governments to see who was better at producing GDP.

He was also a sufficiently talented musician to study at Guildhall, with a good enough ear to love Beethoven - a fact which @ Clavinova has tried to weaponise
I haven't mentioned that junior music courses at Guildhall start from around £3,800. Who paid for Starmer's music lessons in three or four instruments? He probably won a music scholarship at school at some point, but who paid for his music lessons as he was starting out? Did his three siblings have paid-for activities as well?

Because working class children can all afford to play 3/4 instruments can’t they….

sep135 · 27/09/2023 18:50

Why? Because he can’t magically print money from nowhere. News flash.

This. Our debt is absolutely enormous and the yield on newly-issued gilts hit its highest level in 15 years in the summer. The era of cheap government borrowing is well and truly over. Big hikes in public spending could trigger another bond market meltdown like the Trussonomics unfunded tax cuts.

The mythical 'tax the rich' isn't going to plug the gap. The 50% tax rate Osborne introduced actually cost more than it raised. Lots of the high earners are internationally mobile so you risk them moving to the US or Europe. Whack up corporation tax and you chase out businesses and risk jobs and income tax receipts.

There is no easy economic fix here.

Given MN is so pro Labour it might be a shock to see the polling. 56% Intensely dislike Sir Keir. Can’t imagine why…

I’d have expected a different result, it’s usually very pro on threads. I’m glad I’m not alone in feeling irritated by him though

PureAmazonian · 27/09/2023 18:52

@Lastchancechica

"Have you tried getting a job so you can pay the small amount to see a dentist?!"

You have clearly never had any money issues, and that's wonderful for you! But it means you're entirely out of touch with A LOT of people in the uk. So while it's great that you're trying to advocate for women, of course it's something that needs addressing. There are much, much more pressing matters that need to take priority right now. Although I'm not sure this is something someone with the privilege of financial stability would understand.

Birmingham are bankrupt

So are several other councils - some of them under Conservative control.

SillySausagez · 27/09/2023 18:53

I guess he will do but seriously can’t stand the sound of his voice ..

All these people willing to throw the entire country under a bus because they hate and fear trans women.
Tragic and at the same time enraging.

Nobody hates or fears trans women. They don't like women's rights being handed over to men. But I suspect you know this perfectly well 🙄

BIossomtoes · 27/09/2023 18:53

Do you think our grandparents had all of this stuff?

My grandparents all had dentures by the time they were 40. I don’t think we should be aspiring to pre war dental health standards.

Birmingham are bankrupt

Tory Northamptonshire got there first. It went bust about five years ago.

Also, I don’t care that he said a woman can have a penis, why does that matter.

I care about policies, foodbanks, NHS, schools.

And I care that the media is trying to drum up disgusting outrage about trans people in the exact same way they did homosexuality decades ago.
And it’s working.

I've over simplified it by giving the "women can have a penis" quote. What matters is that policies which say a man can self identify as a woman, mean men ('transwomen') can be placed in women's prisons, women's refuges, women's changing rooms and toilets. Enter the women's categories in sports and take prizes/scholarships that are for females. This has happened and it continues to happen. And I care about it. As a woman and as a mother of girls. I want them to have a level playing field in life and to have safe, female only spaces. It's important enough to me, to consider these policies when voting.

lovehisDobbyears · 27/09/2023 19:03

I've always voted Labour, but since it seems Keir doesn't know what a woman is, I will not be voting Labour. This is incredibly important to me.

You won’t be voting Tory then. Their record on women’s rights is abysmal and self ID was Theresa May’s idea.

Mumsnet always strikes me as a centre right forum. Never seen anything to suggest it's pro Labour.

I’d say over last few years it’s been very Labour on these threads

Hence being surprised at vote

I'd respectfully disagree. Any politics thread descends almost immediately to conservative voters = evil scum type insults. It stifles debate because any opposing views are subject to a nasty and personal pile on.

There was one thread about six months ago that was a breath of fresh air where both sides of the political spectrum exchanged views in a pleasant way. Otherwise it's pretty much an echo chamber.

DawnInAutumn · 27/09/2023 19:20

[old gimmer alert]

I have been on MN since 2009 when i was pg the first time.

It's always been pro-labour. Vocally so.

When it became mildly anti labour when Corbyn was at the helm I told DH with some confidence that the Labour party were going to be trounced.

People on MN rarely to never admit to voting conservative. If they admit to not voting labour (for very good reasons in my view- ex labour party member and party official here and am not voting for them this time either) then it is significant. IMO of course.

Strangely coinciding with British politics becoming a complete shitshow. The BBC’s State of Chaos is very illuminating with several old school Tories telling it like it is.

Going by numbers at last landslide you still hear more about I vote Labour etc on mn

I’ve been here ages too and seen the switch

So I disagree with pp about it being centre right, which makes me glad I’m not imagining the reasons for intense dislike going by votes

LlynTegid · 27/09/2023 19:26

I disagree with many of the policies and think that there are areas of our life being ignored. Some of the front bench are not very good I agree.

However if the choice was only between Tory and Labour, then I'll take Labour. A party that was led for three years recently by someone who was planning to give a knighthood allegedly to someone who assaulted his own mother is not one I could ever support.
