To intensely dislike Keir Starmer

1000 replies

LemonyTicket · 27/09/2023 00:42

I can't stand Tories.
The current Tories are the worst

But I still intensely dislike Keir Starmer and will probably vote Green.

I find him phony, with no vision, like a terrible 6th form prefect. And to be honest his whole front bench are dreadful. Wes Streeting nauseates me.

Is it just me?

I think Tim Farron's position became untenable because of his homophobia, rather tag his personal religious beliefs.

I assume the two were tied up together - wasn't there something about him refusing to say gay sex wasn't a sin (in his eyes)...? I don't think he was phobic about gay people or actively campaigned again gay people though did he?

Teddleshon · 27/09/2023 17:02

His attitude towards homosexuality was entirely related to his religious beliefs as I understand it. Personally I felt he was unfairly treated as there must be a number of Muslim and other religious MP's who hold similar beliefs based on their religion.

We will get the government people vote for to win in our FPTP system. Nothing more, nothing less.
Well yes, as usual we will get the government most people didn’t vote for, that’s how FPTP works and it is utterly shit and outdated.

Totally agree. FPTP is stifling, there just doesn't seem to be any choice you vote one way or the other. I am in Ireland where we have proportional representation and it just seems to be a better way of selecting a government. It brings a number of different views and opinions and the need to debate and compromise because it is rare one party dominates and coalitions are often needed. This can lead to better thought out policies. I am not for a minute suggesting we have great politicians but we have a huge mix and no matter what your politics you will have someone to vote for. We are a small country but have at least 5 credible parties to choose from. Flip flopping between Tory or Labour is too narrow just like Democrat or Republican in the States.

I agree it has it's problems - like too much emphasis on swing seats but previously wasn't an alternative proposed and no one wanted it?

Yes, that's very true see also Kates Forbes vs Humza Yousef at the SNP leadership campaign.

Shouldn't be offered to the UK via a referendum, its too complex, i mean who the heck understands the single transferable vote?

A Govt should propose a system or PR via cross party talks, so all main parties on board.

Yes 2011 referendum

Yellownotblue · 27/09/2023 17:08

YABU.

The Tories have destroyed this country, everything they touch turns to shit. I can’t get my head around the idea that Keir Starmer is more deserving of your ‘intense dislike’ than Braverman, Sunak, Cleverly, Gove and so on.

Even if you are somehow indifferent to the catastrophic mismanagement of the last 14 years of Tory government, you should still wish for a change of government, simply because power corrupts. This means getting over your irrational emotions and making a rational decision by voting strategically to oust the Tories.

Doesn't France use something like the transferable vote system?

Same for Brexit. Should never have been decided through a referendum. Google Ireland's "citizen assemblies" which is a good model for citizens to decide on complex issues. It is getting replicated in other jurisdictions because of its success

I couldn't read the full thread. I hate that Starmer and some of his MPs said that a woman can have a penis. I have great concerns about keeping women's rights and not having our identity, opportunities and safe spaces eroded.
That said, if they continue to make a U turn on that stance and show that they have heard women's voices on that issue. I will vote for them. I will never vote Tory.

CurlewKate · 27/09/2023 17:42

Nobody has yet explained why they find Wes Streeting "nauseating".

I can only assume that it's because he does come from an unchallengeably disadvantaged background so can't be dismissed as hypocritical. Or because he's openly gay. Or both.

NDfamily · 27/09/2023 17:44

This is the best response.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/09/2023 17:44

I ❤️ Wes Streeting.

You clear know nothing that the cost of housing benefit, now included in UC, costs the tax payer, let alone the additional costs of homelessness.

You also don't seem to know how much a private dentist costs, for a new patient, up around £250, as they'll insist on x rays, hygienist and a the full check up.

With things like crowns and root canal costing '000s.

Scary you ve a vote.

What are you talking about.
If Labour purchases huge swathes of housing stock ( which they haven’t offered to do knowing it’s unaffordable ) then who will pay for that astronomical bill?

Check ups here are £26.00 no one needs X-rays and full dental cleans.

They can’t make a u turn as many trans groups donate to Labour and have been doing so for years. Starmer is wedged on the fence and even that feels painful . Do you even trust he wouldn’t back track again? A politician that constantly u turns lose their authority and creditability very quickly.

At NHS rates. It’s clearly escaped your notice that NHS dentists are virtually extinct. Where I live the only way children can get dental care is if their parents are registered as patients at a private practice. And of course people need X-rays and hygienist services.

No adult NEEDS an X-ray
No adult NEEDs to see a hygienist!

Do you think our grandparents had all of this stuff? Nope. This is an indulgence. A modern day indulgence.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/09/2023 18:14

I need X-rays all the time. My teeth are crap.

Well then you should pay for it. This endless stream of demands from the nanny state is too much. People have forgotten they are responsible for themselves.

Thementalloadisreal · 27/09/2023 18:17

This again 🙄 you don’t vote for the leader, you vote for the party. It doesn’t matter if you like the leader specifically. Look at the leadership of the conservative Govt for the last 10 years.

madamreign · 27/09/2023 18:19

Dental x-rays are an indulgence now?

That's the most uproariously Tory thing I've ever heard!

I DO pay for them!

Anf it’s nothing to do with bad hygiene/mouth care. I’ve got shit teeth. Like chalk. Even my dentist agreed.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/09/2023 18:20
