Just wanted to put a different spin on all the negative dog threads recently.

thought it would be nice for people to share their amazing pooches. So any photos/funny stories!

This is my gorgeous girl. She loves all people and would choose a bit of attention from a stranger over any treats. She hates water and car drives but always loves the destination (even the vets!)

would love to see what little joys you have in your life!

The potato thief is mine. He's allegedly a Beagle/Rottweiler X, although I am not sure how much I believe that. Despite being a "dangerous" breed he is ridiculously friendly and gentle. Anything and everything he meets is a new best friend, except crows. When he was a puppy, he tried to make friends with a flock of crows, and they did not appreciate his efforts. He now has to check through the window before going outside. If the crows are there he sits in the window crying pathetically until I go out first to chase the crows away for him.

The two little ones are DD19's "babies". I also call them "the babies". I am perfectly aware that neither I nor DD birthed them as was bafflingly suggested in the deleted thread about why people call their dogs babies. They are the youngest animals in the house and they are tiny, therefore they are the babies.

They're in a buggy because the scruffy, dozy-looking one is only a couple of months old. We were having a full day out and he needed somewhere to rest and chill. The older one has no excuses. She's two now she's just lazy bint who hates walking. Despite being Chihuahuas they are both very friendly, placid dogs and not at all snappy or yappy (although the older regularly steals toys from potato theif and makes him cry and the younger made a show of himself barking at a very well-behaved XL Bully on the aforementioned day out).

Here is my ridiculous Bulldog, Cassy. He is a teenager at the moment, nearly 2, and I am thinking it's time for some training classes with other dogs. I have held off as he has been quite good at learning new things, but we need to just calm him down when people arrive. He is jumpy and humpy so he needs some good training/distraction techniques. Will take any suggestions as well.

He is wonderful with our 2 DDs and he has actually completed our family. My DH who grew up with cats absolutely adores him. We are a homebody family, so he suits that vibe well.

One sweet, silly cuddly spaniel

His whole being wags with his tail. He loves unconditionally, and is the loveliest boy

Daft as a brush. Loves his gundog work and swimming. Never heard him growl at anything other than a squirrel.

@Enko love a Bassett hound. I've always wanted one - what are they like? I've only ever had labs and collies (plus whatever random my partner brings home).

They are an utterly wonderful breed but nothing like any other dog.
They take the world in their time and their time alone. You do not get to hurry and the idea of a "quick walk" doesn't exist with a Basset hound.
They are stubborn Independent and they can take a long time to train. You have to have oodles of patience. and a " come" to a basset hound does not look like what you are used to from labs or collies as the video will demonstrate.
They are notoriously poor at potty training but once they have it they are reliable to continue.
You are unlikely to have a Basset that will not at some point introduce you to a flat basset when you encounter a flat basset in the wild the only thing you can do is wait it out as you are not going anywhere until your basset is good and ready to move on.
They are LOOONG dogs and due to this are prone to back problems. Due to their excess skin, they are also prone to skin issues especially yeast infections. Our dog at 4 has not had any major issues with either but this is a known trait of the breed.
They can and often have food allergies or " sensitive stomachs" so it can be a bit hit and miss what foods each one works well with. Ours is on butternut box and it works well for him but £££

They are HUGELY food motivated and have no " off" for being full. Due to this many people overfeed them and you often see Basset hounds that are overweight. Due to their excess skin, it is almost looked upon as a given but many are overweight. They are a lazy breed in nature like to just snuggle and be around their "pack" however they are bred for hunting and independent hunting so it is actually a bit of a myth that they don't want to exercise. Ours loves being taken out for long walks and can keep going for hours just plodding along on his walks. We have a dog walker who to begin with didn't take him with other dogs as he could not get used to the level of sniffing the basset does but now he has simply accepted that's how it is and they go to an area that is safe for others to run and for our Bassett to just do his sniffing then he joins in with the others once he is ready. They are second only to the bloodhound with their scent abilities and they need time to sniff! An interesting info that is out there about Basset hounds is when they are sniffing their hearing ability actually lowers as they are so focused on the sniff. So you need to wait until they come up from the sniff to call for them or it will look like they are ignoring you.

They are HUGELY social animals they adore their pack and want to be with you all the time. Due to this many will say it is a good idea to have more than 1. However, they are not at all selective about who their pack is. They are perfectly happy with humans as their pack or other dog breeds. Hugely accepting of others and due to their gentle mannerism they make really lovely companions. At our doggy day care (he goes twice a week) they use our Basset as one of the early introduction dogs as they say he is exceptional at picking up the new dogs mood and will encourage if it is a shy/nervous dog and equally be happy to go to full play mode when its a dog happy to play. They comment he picks up on anyone in a down mood both other dogs and humans and we certainly find that at home too. If you are down you can be sure that Conkers is right by your side giving support.

He LOVES his cuddles and thinks he is a lapdog (a heavy lapdog at 28 kilos) and he snuggles right in and just falls asleep on you that is one of my favourite things about him when he comes for his cuddle with me. He likes to be right in the centre of the action. For example on Christmas day when we are all sat around the table eating Christmas dinner. He brought in his bone we had given him to have to be in his basket right by the dinner table to be a part of it all.

They are the funniest dogs Ive ever come across. Not a day goes by where he doesn't make me laugh. Their personalities are also second to none (he is my 4th dog breed) and they really just are the loveliest. Due to their patience, they are amazing with children they really get that it is a child (Human puppy 😁) and they need more patience than usual.

Their bottom as I stated in an earlier response can only be rivalled by the Corgi. and the way they are bred their tails go straight up when walking with a white tip so you can always find your otherwise very low-laying dog. Smart piece of breeding there.

There are different types of Bassets hounds and it is worth educating yourself on the types, there are working and show dogs for example and it has to do with how low their stomach goes. Buy from a reputable breeder or a breed rescue as if you get a breeder that doesn't have scruples you can end up with a lot of costs due to their health issues.

I am happy to talk Basset any time :) there are a lot of Facebook groups you can join to get an idea of them though I would suggest you go for UK based ones as I have found them the better groups personally.

I have tried to give you a good example of what a Basset is like. They are not an easy breed but oh they are SO worth it and I wouldn't be without my boy he is amazing wonderful and just the very best.

We’ve had two Jack Russells. They are great. And they will deal with mice and rats in a quick and professional manner with no daft ideas that you might like the corpse as a present.

Yes I saw that too

I do like cats! But they have their disadvantages.

Catsmere · 26/09/2023 12:40

@Enko that was fascinating, thank you! I'm a cat person (like dogs, love cats is probably the most accurate way of putting it) and know nothing about bassets. Though I do now know 9kg of cats sitting on me when I'm trying to sleep pales into insignificance compared with 28kg of basset! 😄

He once ate a hole in the centre of a concrete wall, and also ate a concrete step a few years later
My dds grew up with him and still miss him, he was great with kids

That sounds just like ours! A fellow dog owner fosters dogs, some of them arrive very nervous. Our basset is nicknamed the ‘dog whisperer’ because she’s incredibly patient and insists every dog will be her friend. She adjusts her behaviour to be quieter when she knows the dog is nervous and those dogs gain in confidence around her.

This thread has made my week.

We can't have a dog as part of the family at present for various reasons but it is one of my life's aims to adopt one day. It will be interesting to see what sort of dog as DH likes large dogs, I love greyhounds and DS is quite wary of dogs, he's not keen on barky dogs.

With so much trouble in the world, it is so great to have a thread full of love, care and friendly hounds. I love the basset dog whisperers and their kind understanding. And all the humans who give that to dogs too.

Since I don't yet have a picture to share I give you these both joyful in their own way (yes, I know its a cockatoo, principle remains):

HalliwellManor · 26/09/2023 16:48

My DD10 wanted a dog and we tried to get a rescue but nobody would allow us to adopt as I worked 2 nights per week plus I had a 10 year old.Even though I explained my son who was 19 at the time was at home with my daughter while I was at work they still wouldn't let us adopt so we bought Nyla.Apart from my children she is the best thing that's happened to me.❤️.
When my son passed away nearly 2 years ago and after my DD had returned to school after a few weeks,Nyla gave me a reason to get out of the house and carry on,just knowing that she needed walks got me up and out as during school hours I am in the house alone and without her I think I would have completely crumbled.I would never have taken my own life to escape the pain of losing my son, purely because of my DD10,but I was in a very dark place and Nyla gave me a reason to go out the house.
We have such a strong bond and she is a proper velcro dog and whenever I visit my sons grave Nyla is always with me.
I genuinely don't understand people who don't like dogs as their love is unconditional to us,they love you no matter how you look, how much you weigh, how much money you have etc.My dog has literally been my saviour.❤️❤️

Surplus2requirements · 26/09/2023 18:25

@HalliwellManor I'm so sorry you lost your son, its so hard and not something any parent should have to endure.

My last dog was a daft, gentle lump. He grew up with my son, they loved each other so much. He died a year after my son and it felt like losing another huge part of my life that still had my son in...if that makes any sense.

I swore I'd never get another but here I am with a ridiculous ball of fluff.

He makes me smile even on the bad days
