to get neighbours to stop parking on my drive

I own the house and it has a driveway. There is a rental next to me. New people moved in maybe 2 or 3 months ago. Seems to be a mom and 4 of her male kids that look to be in their early 20s.

They have been repeatedly parking their cars on my driveway and they have been told multiple times to stop. They work on the cars in my driveway and I'm pretty certain my insurance wouldn't cover if they got injured doing that on my property.

Today I had it out with one of the adult males. Told him to get his car off my driveway. He just stood their and argued with me. Then the others came out and started arguing with me. 100% if I had been a man, they wouldn't have stood there and argued with me.

The mom finally came out and apologised for them and said to give them an hour to change the tyre and they'd move it.

The car is still there.

I did say I would have it towed or let the air out of their tyres. I guess they don't think I will.

Should I ring and have them towed now or ring and have them towed after they've gone to bed or just let the air out of their tyres or something else?

They're lying about reporting my grass to anyone. They're just trying to inimidate me. It's Sunday. No offices are open.

I'm not saying they did but they could report you without speaking to anyone. By email for example.

Mumto2kids86 · 25/09/2023 18:54

I don’t know why you’re even asking this question. You know the answer. It’s your property and they are cheeky little **s. Ask them to move it and if it’s not moved in 10 mins call the police or get it towed.

JST88 · 25/09/2023 20:36

I’d get it towed and call the police to advise there could be a hostile situation when this happens. I’d actually be more inclined to do this during the day rather than during the night as you might find less support during the night/feel more vulnerable. A real shame you’re having to deal with such unreasonable entitled horrors. I would also get a fence. Lastly, if you let the air out the tyres or anything you not only make the car less mobile and more of an issue for you but they could then potentially charge you for criminal damage.

Smear some dog poo under the door handles !

@changednameforthiswon please keep safe. You may have to live next to these awful humans for a while. Please just keep safe.

concertgoer · 25/09/2023 22:23

I be dropping a big bucket of tacks/nails on the driveway and forgetting to sweep them up!

LemonQuiche · 25/09/2023 22:34

Could you dig a reasonably deep hole
in the driveway, cover it with large leaves and foliage, and then let the car fall into it? They’d never park there again.

Mumsnet is a British site yes but anyone can post on there. It's like saying Facebook was created in America but only Americans can post on there.🤔🙄

yes, this house is in the US. There is no HOA here either as it is an older neighbourhood. So no, it's not against the law to have long grass in the bac garden.

I will try to find out who the landlord is too. Unless they are related to the owners, I doubt the owners will like their tenants stirring up trouble and threatening their neighbours.

I'm considering having steel bollards installed, large landscape boulders placed. It would have to be something sturdy as these trash would likely damage a fence.

USA here too, OP.
Not sure where you are in the US but there are some LEOs who take their job seriously. Tomorrow, put up "No Trespassing" signs on both sides of your drive and right by the footpath. Then order some big old boulders, 6 or so, to put right next to your drive between the two houses.

Find out who the landlord is or, if you can afford it, contact a lawyer and see what can be done. Suing the landlord for not vetting the renters enough. Also, if you suspect drugs, call the DEA or the local police with that information.

And cut your backyard grass if it is long. It is annoying to other people.

Must try harder

Hmm

gemma19846 · 26/09/2023 17:59

Its a VERY long and expensive process evicting tenants. Theyll have to take them to court etc. Landlord probably wont bother to be honest. If the rents being paid they dont get involved in neighbour disputes

Morganrae1 · 26/09/2023 18:53

It happened to me and the police said they could do nothing. If my car had been on the drive and it got blocked in then they could act. They said I could get it towed but obviously that costs. The knob has moved now thank god, he was a nightmare. He attacked my daughter three times, both verbally and physically. He denied it and the police did nothing.

Bugbabe1970 · 26/09/2023 19:00

Park on their drive see how they like it

pollymere · 26/09/2023 19:13

Ooh.. if you're in the US, get them towed... Every time. Or cops for trespass and criminal damage. Definitely for harassment and intimidation.

Stressedmum1966 · 26/09/2023 19:15

We have been there. The tenants had been told by the estate agents they could use the drive.

we got the landlord to deal with it. It is not a police matter unless they are threatening. I got my local Cllr to raise with the local police who had a word with them.

we are lucky they have now moved on but did things like deliberately parking across our drive and blocking us in - very stressful late at night when you have to pick up your teenage daughter.

we have a yellow line across our drive (based in London) so parking enforcement came and ticketed them - they had the cheek to ask the landlord to pay for their pcn which he didn’t.

good luck

Dumbo12 · 26/09/2023 20:00

If that were to happen in England, then I'd put up a sign that stated that parking was£40 per hour, then tot up the cost and take them to small claims court.

MrsKnows · 26/09/2023 20:08

Get them all towed. Every time! Preferably get them towed at night and ideally by a firm that will invoice the car owner, if they try to retrieve the vehicle.

if you know who the landlord/letting agent is, complain to them, too!

Missingpop · 26/09/2023 22:39

I’d get a friend to park their car behind it as close as they can get it & just leave it there teach the tossers a lesson if they can’t move their car or get into the boot etc they might learn how frustrating it is when someone is taking the piss out of you xx

Nice try. The XL Bullies gave you away though.

What does that mean?

Skodacool · 27/09/2023 07:55

changednameforthiswon · 25/09/2023 02:51

This is correct. It doesn't look like any of the adult males work. They might sell drugs as there are people coming and going a lot.

You could report your suspicions about drugs to the police

changednameforthiswon · 28/09/2023 02:30

UPDATE:

None of them have parked on my drive since then. I'm a little surprised it ended so easily.

It's early days OP... but fingers crossed.

Fallenangelofthenorth · 28/09/2023 09:22

Perhaps they've all been murdered by a rival gang? Or eaten by their XL Bullies?

UpaladderwatchingTV · 28/09/2023 11:49

OP what do you mean by 'None of them have parked on my drive since then. I'm a little surprised it ended so easily.' What did you do that stopped them parking on your drive? I've read and re-read the thread and I can't see that you've done anything to stop them????
