to get neighbours to stop parking on my drive

I own the house and it has a driveway. There is a rental next to me. New people moved in maybe 2 or 3 months ago. Seems to be a mom and 4 of her male kids that look to be in their early 20s.

They have been repeatedly parking their cars on my driveway and they have been told multiple times to stop. They work on the cars in my driveway and I'm pretty certain my insurance wouldn't cover if they got injured doing that on my property.

Today I had it out with one of the adult males. Told him to get his car off my driveway. He just stood their and argued with me. Then the others came out and started arguing with me. 100% if I had been a man, they wouldn't have stood there and argued with me.

The mom finally came out and apologised for them and said to give them an hour to change the tyre and they'd move it.

The car is still there.

I did say I would have it towed or let the air out of their tyres. I guess they don't think I will.

Should I ring and have them towed now or ring and have them towed after they've gone to bed or just let the air out of their tyres or something else?

My friend separated a drive from the neighbours with planters and chain along the length of the drive.

fridaynight1 · 24/09/2023 23:00

You need to get one of these.

So is there separation between the houses (ie a wall or hedge) or just block paving?

No there is no separation just the block paving footpath.

They moved the one car and parked another one on the drive and left a note saying they reported me for the long grass in the back garden. Lies of course as no offices like that are open on Sunday.

These CFs really think my driveway is theirs!

I would have to get them at the end of the driveway and on their side as they will just drive through their yard to park on my drive.

Put a chain link fence up along the side and then a bollard at the end?

Who did they report you to? Which offices? You own your house you can have your grass along as you like??
Are you in England?
You can't block them in, clamp them or have them towed. https://www.askthe.police.uk/faq/?id=0e0cb3f6-12db-eb11-bacb-0022483f57c9#:~:text=It%20is%20a%20criminal%20offence,police%2C%20DVLA%20and%20local%20authorities.
But I am not sure of the rules on moving their car?

Put a bollard at the end of your drive and put in a fence at the side.

CaetwmpynBoBwmpyn · 24/09/2023 23:08

You need to get some form of fencing between you and a bollard at the end.

This would wind me up something chronic.

I think your best bet is to report to the landlord every time they do it. I’d also mention the potentially dangerous dogs they claim to have.

This plus police report

There's no law that says you have to cut your grass!

Put a fence up between your land and theirs.

Also call police for advice. You don't want to fall victim to the law of adverse possession.

EvilElsa · 24/09/2023 23:10

You need to do this. Make each post close enough that they can't angle a car through. Other than that bitch and moan at the agent every single time. Be a massive pain in the arse. Take photos. Record them.

Louise303 · 24/09/2023 23:11

Call the police they are trying there luck to see if they can intimidate you and if you back down there be using your drive daily.

Louise303 · 24/09/2023 23:13

Get a ring doorbell also get any interaction on camera.

TiredMamOfTwo · 24/09/2023 23:15

Put up gates and padlock them.

greyhairnomore · 24/09/2023 23:16

Ring the landlord every single time.

mumda · 24/09/2023 23:20

Report to police.
Report to landlord.

One of these will take time and effort. Neither may be successful.

changednameforthiswon · 24/09/2023 23:20

I'm not sure who the landlord is but I will work on finding out tomorrow.

I like the ideas for the chain fence too. It's a shame I have to spend money to keep these CFs off my property but I will.

My other relative told me to just let them be as they might have a gun and shoot me or something.

OP posts:
MoiraRosesBaybay · 24/09/2023 23:22

Why would they have a gun?
Who are they reporting long grass to?

I agree with a PP, get a skip delivered.

changednameforthiswon · 24/09/2023 23:25

They're lying about reporting my grass to anyone. They're just trying to inimidate me. It's Sunday. No offices are open.

BibbleandSqwauk · 24/09/2023 23:26

@TheSpruce sorry but actually, I think most average people would assume that your private driveway being used by a random person would constitute trespass and would contact the non emergency police. I would. I'm an average, MC, law abiding, never had much interaction with the law type and wouldn't have known that this isn't something the police can help with. It may be wrong, in actual fact, but it's not a stupid assumption. I'd say it's more stupid that it ISN'T a legal matter and that ordinary people are expected to basically deal with this shit on their own.

Louise303 · 24/09/2023 23:33

But have xl bullys dogs worth more than two houses and rented instead of buying.

EvilElsa · 24/09/2023 23:39

If you get concerned for your safety OP call the police then. Any threats of violence or criminal damage report to the police and the landlord. Make sure you gather evidence, dates and times, photos and video. It is a shame about the cost of the fence falling to you, but at least you will have your drive back. Make sure it falls right on the property line so they have no leg to stand on with regards to you being on their property. Get the posts fully concreted in. I wouldn't be surprised if they attempt to move them or damage them in retribution -ring doorbell or CCTV (with a sign up) to get it on record. I wouldn't imagine a landlord would be overly happy with a tenant causing criminal damage.

Louise303 · 24/09/2023 23:44

You cannot live in fear in your own home that is terrible I bet they are renting as they had to move. If they are like this with you there is probably a story of them being antisocial in there previous home.

user1473878824 · 24/09/2023 23:49

I assume from mom and reporting your grass you’re in the US: GET IT TOWED! GET IT TOWED! bangs table ever time

HewasH2O · 24/09/2023 23:49

Suggest that they contact OvergrownLawnInAnIndeterminateCountry.com which offers 24 hour support to the owners of XL Bully dogs who might have guns. Bound to calm things down before the situation escalates dramatically over the next day or so.
