to get neighbours to stop parking on my drive

changednameforthiswon · 24/09/2023 20:41

I own the house and it has a driveway. There is a rental next to me. New people moved in maybe 2 or 3 months ago. Seems to be a mom and 4 of her male kids that look to be in their early 20s.

They have been repeatedly parking their cars on my driveway and they have been told multiple times to stop. They work on the cars in my driveway and I'm pretty certain my insurance wouldn't cover if they got injured doing that on my property.

Today I had it out with one of the adult males. Told him to get his car off my driveway. He just stood their and argued with me. Then the others came out and started arguing with me. 100% if I had been a man, they wouldn't have stood there and argued with me.

The mom finally came out and apologised for them and said to give them an hour to change the tyre and they'd move it.

The car is still there.

I did say I would have it towed or let the air out of their tyres. I guess they don't think I will.

Should I ring and have them towed now or ring and have them towed after they've gone to bed or just let the air out of their tyres or something else?

Are you in the U.K. op?

Throwncrumbs · 25/09/2023 00:03

Are u in the US ?

Batalax · 25/09/2023 00:21

You need a more substantial fence to the side than the chain link ones,

Batalax · 25/09/2023 00:23

I’d be tempted to buy a scrap car for peanuts and plonk it in the middle of the drive. It wouldn’t need to be taxed if off road and not being driven.

Crumpleton · 25/09/2023 00:32

Is it illegal to have long grass where you live?
Strange one if it is.

I'd be calling the police and letting them know that you're being intimidated by 4 grown males when all you've asked them to do is refrain from using your private driveway as their own personal parking lot.

Youcunnyfunt · 25/09/2023 00:40

GUNS? Why would they have a gun?!

Russooooo · 25/09/2023 00:56

Well, that escalated quickly.

Who are they reporting long grass to?

I agree with a PP, get a skip delivered.

I think she's in the US. People report anyone for anything over there. They also have something called a home owners association which stops them making any alterations to the outside of their home. So she won't be able to put up a deviding fence because it will look different to all the other house's.

No, they don’t report anyone for anything.
They shoot first @MoiraRosesBaybayand suffer the consequences because they’re stupid and hotheaded and own far too many firearms.
How do I know? I live here. It’s a daily occurrence.

Waffle78 · 25/09/2023 01:06

I don't think she's in the UK from what she said about them having a gun. More likely the US.

sleepwouldbenice · 25/09/2023 01:22

As people have said

Contact police. When our idiot neighbours blocked our drive, never mind went on it they rang them and said to move it or police would tow
Also report intimidation
ASB with council and police. Repeated
Keep diary and photos and report report report
Record on ring doorbell type thing?
Who gives a damn about your grass and if they've reported

And absolutely the landlord, again and again with documented evidence

Good luck

viques · 25/09/2023 01:50

It’s not long grass, it’s a wildflower meadow.

😁

HerMammy · 25/09/2023 02:00

If you can afford it, fence your property in and have gates at end of driveway or move 🤷🏼‍♀️

Or move!?!?! 😂 Bit extreme.

changednameforthiswon · 25/09/2023 02:49

yes, this house is in the US. There is no HOA here either as it is an older neighbourhood. So no, it's not against the law to have long grass in the bac garden.

I will try to find out who the landlord is too. Unless they are related to the owners, I doubt the owners will like their tenants stirring up trouble and threatening their neighbours.

I'm considering having steel bollards installed, large landscape boulders placed. It would have to be something sturdy as these trash would likely damage a fence.

Don't tell me OP, I bet they spend all their time working on their cars because they don't have jobs. Am I right ?🙄

This is correct. It doesn't look like any of the adult males work. They might sell drugs as there are people coming and going a lot.

Ugh, sorry this is happening to you!

Boulders is a good idea.

Wow this thread has it all:
Parking
XL Bullies
Drug dealing
Unemployed feckless youths
Anti social behaviour
Potential guns

I'd check out any camper vans parked on their property. May well be a meth lab.

Or you could ring the police but obviously on the non emergency 101 line....

Failing that you could make an appointment with a solicitor for "your free 30 minutes legal advice".

IncompleteSenten · 25/09/2023 05:18

Except op says they're in the USA so it probably won't be 101 and I doubt solicitors do half hour free anything.

TheLadyofShalott1 · 25/09/2023 06:00

I have no idea about the laws in the US, but would it be possible for you to get an official change of use for your driveway and have it registered as a business? Then put up a notice saying that your driveway is available for rent at say $30 to $40 per car, per day, but that that does not come with the business/land owner being liable for any costs if a vehicle is damaged or stolen while on said property.

My main thinking here (Dear Mumsnetters) is once they park on land that is rented out for money, would it then become a crime if they do not pay the going rate for parking there?

@changednameforthiswon From a completely different angle OP, could you let the police know anonymously that the house is being used for drug trading, but I think you should be reasonably convinced that that is what they are doing before you follow that route. But also, if you think that they will decide that you are the person who told on them, do you think they are at all likely to become a danger to you?

ewright86 · 25/09/2023 07:26

Then do it. It’s a shame but it’s the only option you really have.

She should have a massive salad while waiting for the police to turn up.

Financiallyopposite · 25/09/2023 07:36

We had this problem, call the agents and put in a complaint to the landlord! I also sent a letter recorded delivery (so I had proof) saying they are not to park there and if it continues I will go to solicitor etc
