to get neighbours to stop parking on my drive

I own the house and it has a driveway. There is a rental next to me. New people moved in maybe 2 or 3 months ago. Seems to be a mom and 4 of her male kids that look to be in their early 20s.

They have been repeatedly parking their cars on my driveway and they have been told multiple times to stop. They work on the cars in my driveway and I'm pretty certain my insurance wouldn't cover if they got injured doing that on my property.

Today I had it out with one of the adult males. Told him to get his car off my driveway. He just stood their and argued with me. Then the others came out and started arguing with me. 100% if I had been a man, they wouldn't have stood there and argued with me.

The mom finally came out and apologised for them and said to give them an hour to change the tyre and they'd move it.

The car is still there.

I did say I would have it towed or let the air out of their tyres. I guess they don't think I will.

Should I ring and have them towed now or ring and have them towed after they've gone to bed or just let the air out of their tyres or something else?

Why in the fuck have you not called the police? They are trespassing. Call the police and call for a tow truck to get their vehicles off of your property. It is absolute madness that you have allowed this to continue for so long.

It's a civil matter. and did you have to swear at OP? and berate her - madness that...

Depends what stance you want to take.

I'd smash the windscreen in. Then say it was the wind in that specific place.

wow.

please don't this OP

Aside possible retribution, this is criminal damage!

Please can we have a diagram?

You really can’t picture the set up at all?

Outrageous. Id get it towed

What’s the driveway set up? We need a diagram, as others have noted.

Best solution is the bollard / gate option, as others have said above.

Some asked how they could argue being able to park on my drive.

CF are insanely entitled. So many young males are entitled and not used to being told no.

They argued that I don't have a car( I do). They argued that we didn't cut our backyard a few times. They argued they have valuable XL bullies that are worth more than both our houses. They argued that they don't have a driveway and therefore needed one to work on their cars.

My response to all of it is that I didn't care and it wasn't my problem.

They sound lovely.

And the valuable XL Bullies might be on borrowed time.

A tow company is unlikely to move it unless you take them to court first. If you damage the car whilst it’s on your property (or while having it towed, which is very likely) and they can prove you caused it, you could get done from criminal damage. The police won’t do anything as it’s not illegal, it is classed as a civil matter. All you can do is take them to court which is time consuming and I’m pretty sure to do that, they’d need to be on your drive constantly up until the court date. It’s insane but there isn’t really much you can do about it if they aren’t willing to stop.

Another idea - drain the oil out of the engine in the dead of night. They’ll be able to drive it away, but it won’t come back!
‘No idea who did it, car shouldn’t be there anyway - sorry’

Batshit, but I can definitely imagine it - people are so completely delusional and entitled nowadays. Is this UK though OP?

I don't think you can have it towed or call the police. I'd be going back round and arguing again tbh as the mum sounds reasonable. I'd also be calling someone in to fit a penguin bollard in the morning! Nightmare neighbours OP!

I love MN, so many stupid responses about getting the car towed and calling the police when neither are actual options 😂

You were ticking some good boxes, even before you introduced the XL bullies.

delivered blocking the in and leave it there for a few weeks.

That'll cost a few Bob!

Don't do anything like spraying their windscreen with WD40.

You could start to park across the entrance to your drive so they can't access it although that sounds as if they wouldn't stop going on it when you weren't there. The bollard idea is a good one.
When I had neighbour noise problems with a rental property I contacted the letting agents and it turned out that part of their tenancy agreement was that they weren't supposed to cause disturbance or upset to neighbours. It would be worth contacting the agents or landlord to find out if that is part of their tenancy agreement.

Don't tell me OP, I bet they spend all their time working on their cars because they don't have jobs. Am I right ?🙄

Report
Gillbil · 24/09/2023 22:50

You need to get someone to install some driveway parking blockers along the entrance and sides so if they do park there you can block them in and if they park over it, the car would be on half private and public property making it parked illegally.
Goodluck, they seem like absolute s#&theads

Then its bollard or chain time accompanied by cctv. If they try and damage the security you've put in place it will be recorded.

Report
stonedaisy · 24/09/2023 22:50

Uggghhh that is so annoying. You'll have to hound their estate agent and or landlord and really kick up a fuss, maybe try and get some free legal advise so you can confidently say you are going down the legal route.
100% sure the landlord wont want too much agro and the tenant will hopefully get told to pack it in or they'll have to go.
Do you have a car / park there?

This is an old aerial view of the houses. the purple lines are my property lines. The blue are theirs. You can clearly see my driveway with a car parked in the driveway. They keep parking their cars in my driveway. Sometimes it is 1 car. Sometimes there are 3 cars parked all the way back to where the trees are.

I think your best bet is to report to the landlord every time they do it. I’d also mention the potentially dangerous dogs they claim to have.

So is there separation between the houses (ie a wall or hedge) or just block paving?
