to get neighbours to stop parking on my drive

I own the house and it has a driveway. There is a rental next to me. New people moved in maybe 2 or 3 months ago. Seems to be a mom and 4 of her male kids that look to be in their early 20s.

They have been repeatedly parking their cars on my driveway and they have been told multiple times to stop. They work on the cars in my driveway and I'm pretty certain my insurance wouldn't cover if they got injured doing that on my property.

Today I had it out with one of the adult males. Told him to get his car off my driveway. He just stood their and argued with me. Then the others came out and started arguing with me. 100% if I had been a man, they wouldn't have stood there and argued with me.

The mom finally came out and apologised for them and said to give them an hour to change the tyre and they'd move it.

The car is still there.

I did say I would have it towed or let the air out of their tyres. I guess they don't think I will.

Should I ring and have them towed now or ring and have them towed after they've gone to bed or just let the air out of their tyres or something else?

For those saying get it towed who’s going to tow it ?? The council won’t, nor would the police. If they persist the only thing you can do is take them to court as a civil matter, then the court could ordered it to be removed. (You could pay to have it towed privately but would be liable for any damages to the car).

best hope you have is if you can restrict access to your drive.

Thisismyname33 · 24/09/2023 21:03

It’s a civil matter the police won’t do anything

BibbleandSqwauk · 24/09/2023 21:04

OP I don't think you've said if you actually have a car? If not, the quick and easy way is to scatter some nails, screws, bit of broken glass on your driveway until you can get a bollard installed. I can't believe anyone would think they have any sort of right to park on another house's drive. It's so weird.

ButterCrackers · 24/09/2023 21:05

Contact the landlord. Explain that your drive will get damaged. Contact the police about the agression.

smallshinybutton · 24/09/2023 21:06

Can you borrow a large dog?

smallshinybutton · 24/09/2023 21:06

Nails on your drive?

Saschka · 24/09/2023 21:09

Contact the landlord about their threatening behaviour, contact the police and say four adult men squared up to you and threatened you… rung the landlord every single time it happens. The landlord will get fucking sick of it, especially if the police are getting called out to their property, and will make them pack it it. Or evict them.

SquashPenguin · 24/09/2023 21:09

We have this problem with our parking at work and the dickhead who rents the flat upstairs. Trespassing is a civil matter so the police can’t do anything, and you can’t just get someone’s vehicle towed. My advice would be to get lockable bollards. Lock their car in if you have to.

UpaladderwatchingTV · 24/09/2023 21:17

I've just read this OP - 'If a person has blocked your driveway and is preventing you from getting your own vehicle out, we may be able to help. You can report antisocial behaviour online'. So if you do have a vehicle and they're blocking you getting out, I'd follow the link, although it is on the Met Police site, so if you live outside of London, it might be worth asking your local police if they can act on it as antisocial behaviour.

If not, then do as others have suggested, sprinkle nails etc all over the drive. My DH did this in Spain one time when we got sick to death of the local kids zooming round our block at all times of the day AND night, loudly revving up their little fart box motorbikes, which in turn set the neighbourhood dogs off! The Spanish neighbours had had words with no effect, but the nails did the trick, as he placed them in an area where cars didn't go, but the bikes did! The neighbours loved us when they found out what he'd done, as it had been driving them nuts for months.

LittleObe · 24/09/2023 21:20

Depends what stance you want to take.

I'd smash the windscreen in. Then say it was the wind in that specific place.

Toottooot · 24/09/2023 21:20

If you drive, park your car on their driveway.

ThePoshUns · 24/09/2023 21:22

Trespassing is not a criminal offence, not a police matter. This is a civil dispute.

Bellyblueboy · 24/09/2023 21:29

Are you in the uk? Just noticed you said mom.

if in the Uk weirdly it’s not illegal to park on someone else’s drive.

You need to get gates or a pop up bollard installed.

they are assholes.

Thatladdo · 24/09/2023 21:31

smallshinybutton · 24/09/2023 20:47

Can you get one of those bollards you need a key for?

You could go this route, but then the silly games can begin like removing padlockes for their own and you trapped on your own drive etc.
Lettings agent is say is best bet, are they in some way liable for their tenants behaviour? maybe seek some legal advice daft things like this can grown arms and legs.

EvilElsa · 24/09/2023 21:31

I'd not bother letting the tyres down, will just be left there for longer.
I'd be extremely tempted to put a brick through the window and deny all knowledge but probably won't be a good idea (don't want you to be threatened by a group of men).
I would go and ask for it to be moved immediately. As soon as its gone take steps to block access. Presumably you haven't got a car yourself? Long chain across with a padlock, lockable bollard or heavy planters. I know these can be hard to get hold of quickly- do you have anyone who can come and block your drive for you temporarily?

CantThinkOfANewUsernameAgain · 24/09/2023 21:34

Planters filled with concrete at the bottom if you don't need to use the drive

EvilElsa · 24/09/2023 21:34

Also CCTV pointed directly and obviously at the drive...a lot people will be put off if they are being recorded on camera

They're key operated, there is no padlock and you couldn't fit a padlock either.

GloriousGoosebumps · 24/09/2023 21:38

I suggest you stop talking to them about their tresspassing since they've heard you and have obviously decided to ignore you. Instead you need to block them from your drive. Parking bollards would be effective or if you don't have a car yourself, then place heavy planters to block their cars. I'd also complain to their landlord. Talk of towing cars etc would be ridiously expensive and they'd still park on your drive if they thought you were out because they'd see it as a game. You need to stop them completely. A Google search says the least expensive folding lockable bollard is £20.99 but some are really expensive.

Summerbay23 · 24/09/2023 20:45

Call the police, if they are on your property I imagine it’s trespassing and possession damage to property (if oil etc on drive).

Which is a civil matter and nothing to do with the police,

She should call them if they are behaving in a threatening manner

gamerchick · 24/09/2023 21:42

Apparently it's legal for anyone to park on your drive. It's also legal to park in front of them, blocking them on it though. I've got some mint CCTV of people trying to get off without knocking.

You either have to make them fed up or stop them parking there in the first place. With a bollard. Or fling a load of screws on the drive. Means you can't park there yourself like.

KissyMissy · 24/09/2023 21:46

Screws on the drive

ChimneyPot · 24/09/2023 21:47

if you don’t use your drive get a skip
delivered blocking the in and leave it there for a few weeks.

Shade17 · 24/09/2023 21:48

No, it’s just as illegal as clamping them.

Please can we have a diagram?
