to get neighbours to stop parking on my drive

changednameforthiswon · 24/09/2023 20:41

I own the house and it has a driveway. There is a rental next to me. New people moved in maybe 2 or 3 months ago. Seems to be a mom and 4 of her male kids that look to be in their early 20s.

They have been repeatedly parking their cars on my driveway and they have been told multiple times to stop. They work on the cars in my driveway and I'm pretty certain my insurance wouldn't cover if they got injured doing that on my property.

Today I had it out with one of the adult males. Told him to get his car off my driveway. He just stood their and argued with me. Then the others came out and started arguing with me. 100% if I had been a man, they wouldn't have stood there and argued with me.

The mom finally came out and apologised for them and said to give them an hour to change the tyre and they'd move it.

The car is still there.

I did say I would have it towed or let the air out of their tyres. I guess they don't think I will.

Should I ring and have them towed now or ring and have them towed after they've gone to bed or just let the air out of their tyres or something else?

Call the police on 101 and give them the car reg. could be it’s on record for something else.
Contact their landlord, they’re probably breaking clauses in their tenancy agreement. Tell LL you will call every time they do something wrong.
fitting a bollard or licked gates might be the only solution.

🤔 🧐

Oioicaptain · 25/09/2023 08:15

Obviously you need a penguin bollard.

Oioicaptain · 25/09/2023 08:17

@Shadypaws23

It should be just for mums though. I find it really annoying when men join in and then start to mansplain.

Lottie4 · 25/09/2023 08:19

If you can't find who the landlord is, is there a rental agency involved? If so, I contact them and not let it rest. Also, police have got to be worth a shot especially if they're humiliating you. If not a bollard at the end of your drive and something permanent put on your boundary. Take photos of evidence!

Some asked how they could argue being able to park on my drive.

CF are insanely entitled. So many young males are entitled and not used to being told no.

They argued that I don't have a car( I do). They argued that we didn't cut our backyard a few times. They argued they have valuable XL bullies that are worth more than both our houses. They argued that they don't have a driveway and therefore needed one to work on their cars.

My response to all of it is that I didn't care and it wasn't my problem.

Well those valuables can't be that valuable if they're renting!

Best I leave then being I'm not a mum!

GrandHighPoohbah · 25/09/2023 08:30

Do you have a hosepipe? I would find a sudden need to hose down my driveway every time they came to work on their cars. Oh, and I am soooo clumsy with where the water sprays......

howrudeforme · 25/09/2023 08:34

can you get other neighbours on your side?

we’ve got new neighbours a few doors down and I feel sorry for their immediate neighbours. Use their own drive but reckon he’s running a business from it and a mess. They block us in constantly. Once I asked them to move their car they did but when I came back 4 young males taking the piss out of me.

but no one is prepared to come together to tackle them/blocking/noise as people scared.

I feel for you. But as they are renting the landlord should be contacted if you can find them through land registry? Also if you Google properties to let on x street it often brings up properties that have been rented with estate agent details.

@AngryAndAnxious it is an unwritten mumsnet rule to provide a drawing for any parking thread

Muchtoomuchtodo · 25/09/2023 08:51

I think being in the US is likely to change things considerably.

Not that what they’re doing is wrong, but about the legality of it. I’m sure it varies between states over there so much of our advice will be useless!

Why in the fuck have you not called the police? They are trespassing. Call the police and call for a tow truck to get their vehicles off of your property. It is absolute madness that you have allowed this to continue for so long.

Trespass in itself isn’t a criminal offence and not a police matter. They will usually advise that you get a court order to keep them off your property - if the then breach the order it becomes a criminal offence. That said, these people are parking and repairing vehicles on your land which may give the police additional powers under the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022. You need to contact the police on 101 for advice, but letting the tyres down or anything else which damages the vehicles could get you into trouble.

Alternatively you can contact your local council for advice as they are causing a nuisance, and if you know who the landlord is, you could try reporting what’s happening to them and ask them to deal with it - tell them the bill for any damage to your property will be coming their way.

Do they have 101 in the USA? That’s where the OP lives.

No there is no separation just the block paving footpath.

They moved the one car and parked another one on the drive and left a note saying they reported me for the long grass in the back garden. Lies of course as no offices like that are open on Sunday.

These CFs really think my driveway is theirs!

sorry, If you own your house, who are they reporting you to for the 'long grass' - what does that even mean?

StillWantingADog · 25/09/2023 09:15

I think it’s difficult to advise you op as we are overwhelmingly British and how you’d go about sorting this would not be the same as it is here

to is the whole reporting for long grass thing is ridiculous- it just could never happen here (there seems to be a bit of a growing trend to do not cut grass tbh).

you are not being unreasonable they sound utterly unpleasant but very difficult to us to advise what best to do, not knowing what the rules are where you are.

User838960 · 25/09/2023 09:23

I've had this happen before OP and I phoned the non emergency police number. They happened to have the reg on record and phoned the person parking there to give them a bit of a scare. They came straight over and moved it.

Ivymom · 25/09/2023 09:37

Depending on your state, those XL Bullies might not be legal to own. Also, most homeowners insurance won’t cover your home if they find out you have them. You can usually google the address to find the property owner and make a complaint to them. Be sure and report the dogs to them too. They probably aren’t aware the tenants have them.

I would also contact the police using the non emergency number to have their cars towed every time they park on or are blocking your driveway. Request that the responding officers make a police report every time too. You want a paper trail in case things escalate. If they are selling drugs or doing anything illegal, they will probably stop using your driveway and leave you alone once they realize you won’t hesitate to involve the police.

If you don’t already have them, I would look into getting security cameras set up around your home. Share the trouble you are having with any neighbors you are friendly with. Chances are, other neighbors are probably having issues with or negative interactions with them too.

It's a civil matter. The police cannot do anything.

Youcunnyfunt · 25/09/2023 00:40

GUNS? Why would they have a gun?!

Practically anyone can have a gun in the USA. Also, they are probably drug dealers.

Well, it's up to the website owners to decide who can use it. And there are plenty of people around who are neither mums nor men.

WhatapityWapiti · 25/09/2023 10:04

Call the police. They have had their warning.
