What with his random shite this week about scrapping a non-existent meat tax and an imaginary 7 bins, actually scrapping his own home insulation workforce that was only set up a few months ago, scrapping any useful bits of HS2 and now scrapping A-levels (which is so far removed from what is actually possible in schools right now that it's not even funny), what the fuck is he on?

He's just flailing around madly scrapping everything in case someone, somewhere might vote Tory over it.

And he was supposed to be the sensible replacement to Liz Truss.

@MadderthanMorris
The price extracted to prop up a Labour government would be too high.

As opposed to the price we're currently paying for Tory asset stripping and corruption?

algasport · 25/09/2023 12:20

@madamreign
Definitely

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/09/2023 12:20

Yep. Sinking ship.

jayajana · 25/09/2023 12:57

I couldn't believe my ears when he was on about this 'I have saved you all from 7 bins and meat tax' nonsense last week. 😆 It reminded me of the 'they're trying to take our kettles' line in the Brexit campaign. The problem is, some people will believe it. And, in the same week, LT makes a comeback, all smiles as if nothing ever happened. WTF! Why is she being given airtime? And Farage is there too, grinning like the Cheshire Cat. It's like the Muppet Show. The world has gone mad.

Thankfully your in a minority.... Labour still have a 21pt lead over the Tories, 24 vs 45, with 89% of voters believing the UK needs a fresh leadership team.

Its going to be difficult for Sunak to reinvent himself before any GE.

It's scary.

As far as I can tell Sunak is left playing to the 24ish% of the electorate who will pretty much vote Tory whatever he does, or at least won't vote for anyone else.

If you look at his climate change denial and stop the boats announcements, they really haven't changed the opinion polls, they are just playing to one section of the electorate, and because Sunak has little political nous he has failed to notice that, that section will vote for him no matter how many times he lies or breaks the law, it is the other 75% he needs to try and convince.

Alexandra2001 · 25/09/2023 13:10

The non existent taxes rubbish has back fired, people i know, Tory voters, say "these taxes must have been tory tax plans in the first place, if they ever existed"

He isn't even getting his base to back him....

I wonder whether he'd have the votes. A lot of his MPs might not be too keen on the idea, for obvious reasons.

@TrashedSofa I think the point is that the many of the "impossible tasks" Sunak faces are of his own and his party's own making.

I think the converse may be true. There are a shit load of Tory MPs who want to stand down at the next election which can't come soon enough. Especially for the ones who have an afterlife lined up.

What sort of numbers are you thinking?

There's about 50 of the existing 350ish who've said they won't stand, not all of whom necessarily want to bring the current gig to an end sooner rather than later. We can assume there are others who'll step aside but haven't said so publicly yet. Probably anyone with a majority of more than 20k feels safe and doesn't have to think about saving their own skin.

At least "they're trying to take your kettles" made sense, in that the idea was that the EU were trying to do something bad and our Brexit heroes were going to protect us.

"We were going to impose seven bins on you but now we've changed our minds because councils told us it wouldn't work" doesn't really have the same ring to it.

noblegiraffe · 25/09/2023 15:22

Does Rishi need the support of his MPs to call an election? I thought he could just call one.

OP posts:
TrashedSofa · 25/09/2023 15:37

GE before the end of the 5 year term is Parliament's choice rather than the executive. It would need a majority parliamentary vote.

TrashedSofa · 25/09/2023 15:42

Actually no I think that's gone now.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dissolution_and_Calling_of_Parliament_Act_2022

However we did have a parliamentary vote on calling the 2019 one, and got rid of the (stupid) fixed term Parliament stuff Cameron brought in.

On the kettles thing, aren't we sticking to EU regulations now anyway, so leaving didn't make any difference except we have no influence on what those regulations might be?

I read the price would be too high for Labour to get into power.... no mention of coalition....

You'll have to say what you mean, i can't second guess you.

Given the LDs are on 9% and Labour may yet do well in Scotland, hopefully wont be a coalition.

Current predictions are the Tories will be wiped out.... with less than 100 MPs.

Over optimistic but Sunak is doing little to reverse their fortunes
