Dogs slobbering on products in shops

I know I'm not being unreasonable! But surely some think I am as they allow their dogs to do this.

Took DD(7) shopping today, trip was really spoiled by a few dogs.

Lush. Someone brought their large dog in, this dog was head height to the lower shelves, and had its snout in several of the products. I was about to complain to the staff, but several staff went over and started petting the dog, clearly they were team dog. I don't want my clean bath products with added dog slobber, nor do I want them handled by someone who has just been touching dogs. I will email lush to tell them, but I am posting to please ask dog people to resist taking your dogs into stores where they are going to have their noses in the products.

Next was at the little pop up market. Another dog, in owner's arms, sneezed on the wares (hand-knitted toys). Obviously sneezing happens, but come on, that's just gross.

Third, today, mid-to-large sized dog, cocked his leg on someone's stall. Owner wasn't even watching. Stall -holder has to pack up her table, with dog piss on the table leg. I did tell the owner, of the stall, she was really pissed off, and lamented that it has happened before, but because she's positioned in the outdoor market area, she has no control over people bringing their dogs right up to her stall.

Fourth. Woman had her dog on a long leash. Elderly chap tripped over the leash. Luckily he didn't land on the ground, it was busy so he just half -fell on someone as he stumbled, but he was shaken, and the person he landed on was hurt too. Dread to think how the old man would be doing had he completely fallen on the ground.

Fifth, there was a dog shit in the middle of the outdoor market.

This is all in one day. We were only out for about three hours.

Please please stop bringing dogs everywhere. And if you absolutely must, please watch them vigilantly so that the rest of us aren't impacted by them.

Yanbu - dogs should stay at home, or go to the park. They should not be in the shops.

Yabu. Dogs are still great, better than humans, and comparable to kids.

@GonnaGetGoingReturns Nope! Just our local supermarket!

but why is it an unfair comparisons, both spread germs ? dogs sniffing and dribbling over products and sneezing etc, same with kids that are not under the control of the parents, with the product's etc

different germs :

Pasteurella, Salmonella, Brucella, Yersinia enterocolitica, Campylobacter, Capnocytophaga, Bordetella bronchiseptica, Coxiella burnetii, Leptospira, Staphylococcus intermedius and Methicillin resistance staphylococcus aureus are the most common viral and bacterial zoonotic infections transmitted to humans by dogs.

trythisforsize · 23/09/2023 20:54

plus, kids haven't usually licked their arses

And here you are! You must love them 👍😍

And you too, always on them 🐶😁

sunglassesonthetable · 23/09/2023 20:47

i think the common factor is they create hazards one way or another

I think we all get that.

But we all know it's a road to nowhere and also an unfair comparison.

That was the whole point of my post. You can't compare 2 totally different things...

This dogs around human food and products needs to stop. It's a public health issue. I personally am going to boycott all food serving places that allow dogs indoors:

''Viral infections such as rabies and norovirus and bacterial infections including Pasteurella, Salmonella, Brucella, Yersinia enterocolitica, Campylobacter, Capnocytophaga, Bordetella bronchiseptica, Coxiella burnetii, Leptospira, Staphylococcus intermedius and Methicillin resistance staphylococcus aureus are the most common viral and bacterial zoonotic infections transmitted to humans by dogs. ''

They all allow dogs indoors, because guide dogs are allowed everywhere. So you'd best stay home and cook your own food.

but why is it an unfair comparisons, both spread germs ? dogs sniffing and dribbling over products and sneezing etc, same with kids that are not under the control of the parents, with the product's etc

Please.

If I really need to explain that I think it's time to take a deep breath and just leave it or bang my head against the wall.

Maybe take a read of @Fab973 's post. There are legal implications around leaving small children at home on their own, which don't exist for DOGs just for starters. Because they are actual HUMANS. But you get the gist. I'm sure.

And I have a lovely dog.

Oh look… another I hate dog thread. How original.

I don't hate dogs. Love them and until recently, when we lost our much loved 10 year old Labrador, I was a besotted dog owner.

But I treated my dog like a dog, the best thing for dogs is to give them what they need not slot them into human modern lifestyles. They are not accessories to be dragged around places like Lush which will be a brutal attack on their very sensitive sense of smell. As much as I was fine with my dog coming home muddly, smelling of wet dog, slobbering and wanting a cuddle, my house a hair fest, and poo in my garden I do not expect anyone else to tolerate any of that in shops or public spaces.

Most people don't hate dogs. They dislike some owners behaviour.

Blendiful · 23/09/2023 20:58

@Mountaineer0009 because it's immoral to leave your children at home alone (young ones behaving how you describe) and child neglect.

Dogs are perfectly capable of being left at home and do not need to be going to these places with their owners regardless of what germs are being spread.

jays · 23/09/2023 20:59

Dogs seem to have been forced to self identify as children these days. It’s madness!

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 23/09/2023 20:36

Lots of John Lewis stores have Waitrose food halls in them so it must be easy for a dog to go in via JL and end up in Waitrose. Not saying this happened here and haven’t seen dogs in my local Waitrose yet (that I can recall).

I can name and shame. Wellington, in Somerset. Dogs in, frequently. Sidmouth, Devon. Chihuahua in on Thursday.

vodkaredbullgirl · 23/09/2023 21:01

My dogs are dogs, not furbabies or children.

Kids and assistance dogs - the two favourite deflections of the typical dog 'lover'.

Let's just assume we are fine with assistance dogs - ok? Can you hold that thought or is it too deep for you?

Now, what's your response to the spreading of those dangerous germs around human food?

Teder · 23/09/2023 21:03

YANBU.

I really could do without being approached by someone’s slobbery mutt while I’m enjoying a meal out. I’ve left my own slobbery mutt at home. He’s shown zero interest in shopping in John Lewis or grabbing brunch because he’s an animal. I love my dog dearly and ensure he has a happy life but he’s a dog.

Dogs don’t need to be inside shops or anywhere they serve food. Well behaved dogs are fine outside but again, control your dog. I don’t want them sniffing around me when I’m eating. I love my sniffing, snaffling dog but not yours, thanks.

i was debating for weather its possible for better restrictions on the handling of products from dogs and children to prevent germs, i wasent advocating children being left unsupervised,

I’ve had the last couple of days with my dogs ruined by children. Today, a horrible little boy deliberately kicked a football in my dogs face. Hard. When my dog (who was on a lead) yelped, the little boy and his friend found it hilarious. Mother was on her phone and didn’t even notice.
Two days ago, we were in a restaurant. My dog was under the table, happy with a treat and quiet. A child came crawling up under the table (hands and knees, so I didn’t see them) and decided to try and take my dogs treat. Fortunately, my dog is well trained and passive and I only realise what was happening when a voice from under the table shrieked “give it to me”. I very sternly and loudly told him to “get out” and only then did his mother notice where as was. As he crawled out from under the table, her words were “oh darling, have you been playing”???.
He could very easily have been bitten in that situation, which I’m sure would have been my or my dogs fault. Entitled, selfish, shoddy parents, please keep your children under control. Thank you. And before you tell me that YOUR children don’t behave like that, MY dogs are well trained, well behaved and no, I wouldn’t take them shopping.

Why on earth are you bringing your dog to a restaurant. Completely bizarre on your part.

Registered Guide Dogs are treated regularly for worms and vaccinated annually. They have regular health checks.

A lot of owners don't bother with worming treatments or vaccinations. I read a report last week stating many owners are now anti-vaxxers for their pets, some believing it causes autism in their dogs.

People are idiots for treating their dogs like this. It's no fun for the dogs. I see a lot of posts here stating their kids suffer from sensory overload. It's hundreds of times worse for dogs.

sunglassesonthetable · 23/09/2023 21:07

@trythisforsize

No don't start the "typical dog lover" thing.

I'm a massive dog lover. Probably typical in many ways.

Doesn't mean I think dogs should be in shops at all.

It's not the appropriate word to use here.

I have a dog and quite like being able to take them the odd place for an emergency visit - local corner shop, bakery with counter etc but people really are so unaware of their dogs. Last time I was in Waterstones in zone 1 London fgs I watched a dog piss all over the tower of baskets, the owner didn’t see and the till worker said it happens all the time and they can’t stop it (guess the smell of other dogs makes more do it). Makes me think twice about using a basket in places!

That's rank. We once had the "pleasure" of seeing a dog shitting into a bag in the middle of Go Outdoors. At least the owner had the presence of mind to catch it in a poo bag but fgs, it's really not what you want when you're browsing the camping equipment.

To the posters complaining about "yet another dog-bashing thread": maybe the prevalence of them is directly proportional to the number of inconsiderate and / or oblivious dog owners. Something to think about, maybe...?

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 23/09/2023 21:08

YANBU I recently had a hairdressing appointment spoiled by a women bringing her 2 dogs with her! Why? They were bored, barking and a nuisance. What on earth made her think a hairdressing salon was a good place to bring her dogs I have no idea. It's a really lovely salon and I really look forward to a peaceful pamper. I asked if dogs were allowed and was told 'not really' but they couldn't afford to turn her away when she rocked up with her dogs.

I was also stunned to see a dog snuffling around the dresses in John Lewis! I don't want dog hair and drool on a new dress! What are these people thinking?

anunlikelyseahorse · 23/09/2023 21:08

snygghygge · 23/09/2023 17:52

I personally can't stand children with dirty, sticky fingers touching things in shops. Each to their own, I suppose.

Yes, but unlike dogs it's considered neglect / illegal to leave young kids alone at home or tied up outside a shop.

Moonwatcher1234 · 23/09/2023 21:09

Bicester village is the worst for this now - it was shocking to see how many dogs were being hauled from shop to shop. They were literally under everyone’s feet and it was so distracting and unpleasant. People are so selfish an unfair on their dogs behaving like this.
