Dogs slobbering on products in shops

PurpIish · 23/09/2023 17:21

I know I'm not being unreasonable! But surely some think I am as they allow their dogs to do this.

Took DD(7) shopping today, trip was really spoiled by a few dogs.

Lush. Someone brought their large dog in, this dog was head height to the lower shelves, and had its snout in several of the products. I was about to complain to the staff, but several staff went over and started petting the dog, clearly they were team dog. I don't want my clean bath products with added dog slobber, nor do I want them handled by someone who has just been touching dogs. I will email lush to tell them, but I am posting to please ask dog people to resist taking your dogs into stores where they are going to have their noses in the products.

Next was at the little pop up market. Another dog, in owner's arms, sneezed on the wares (hand-knitted toys). Obviously sneezing happens, but come on, that's just gross.

Third, today, mid-to-large sized dog, cocked his leg on someone's stall. Owner wasn't even watching. Stall -holder has to pack up her table, with dog piss on the table leg. I did tell the owner, of the stall, she was really pissed off, and lamented that it has happened before, but because she's positioned in the outdoor market area, she has no control over people bringing their dogs right up to her stall.

Fourth. Woman had her dog on a long leash. Elderly chap tripped over the leash. Luckily he didn't land on the ground, it was busy so he just half -fell on someone as he stumbled, but he was shaken, and the person he landed on was hurt too. Dread to think how the old man would be doing had he completely fallen on the ground.

Fifth, there was a dog shit in the middle of the outdoor market.

This is all in one day. We were only out for about three hours.

Please please stop bringing dogs everywhere. And if you absolutely must, please watch them vigilantly so that the rest of us aren't impacted by them.

Yanbu - dogs should stay at home, or go to the park. They should not be in the shops.

Yabu. Dogs are still great, better than humans, and comparable to kids.

Tough, guide dogs are allowed in all restaurants, regardless of whether you think they're "disgusting".

Don’t be o rude. No one is talking about guide dogs

Otins · 25/09/2023 09:07

My point is that the poster said dog owners have no choice but to take their dogs with them, but dog owners DO have a choice.

I’m sure the increase in dogs being allowed in cafes and restaurants is due to entitled dog owners saying they have no choice but to take their dog, and why should they lose out, so haranguing cafes etc to become dog friendly.

It is unhygienic and not necessary to have dogs in eating establishments.

MartinChuzzlewit · 25/09/2023 09:14

MN is fairly bonkers when it comes to dogs though. In the summer a poster wrote an OP, not about dogs but about ableism towards a child. She mentioned, because it was relevant, that a family had to sit outside because they had dogs. She used the words ‘dog friendly cafe’.

95% of posters entirely ignored the child ablism AIBU question and positively frothed that OP said “dog friendly cafe”. Dozens of “it’s not dog friendly if they can’t go inside!!” And “The owner is wrong to advertise it as dog friendly”. When OP said it was clear on their signage and social media that dogs are welcome outside, people frothed even more moaning about how unwelcoming places are to dogs 😂😂

vodkaredbullgirl · 25/09/2023 09:16

Why don't people start a petition to stop dogs in cafes and shops, if it bothers them so much???

MartinChuzzlewit · 25/09/2023 09:18

Highandlows · 23/09/2023 20:15

How ridiculous! Most dogs behave really well. Only people who dislike dogs would make bullshit like a bunch of dogs peeing in shops and markets. I really think this new non stop daily threads are from people from countries that are known to hate dogs. Most people like dogs and are happy to see them or do not mind them around.

Edited

I disagree.

I think Kat dogs now are badly behaved.

I blame the surgence of dog ownership in lockdown. Stupid people bought dogs they can’t look after or train.

When I was a kid lots of people (including us) had dogs but nobody ever treated them the way they’re treated now. Taking the dog everywhere you go would have been considered an absurd notion

Possibly because petitions (about anything) generally achieve the sum total of fuck all?

plus, kids haven't usually licked their arses

You obviously haven’t met my nephew

Spanne · 25/09/2023 09:24

How did people sway business owners to let dogs in? Try those tactics.

Some people in an eatery will be on holiday. They can't leave their dog in their accomadation, so they have no choice but to take their dog with them.

Of course there is a choice, they can put the dog in kennels before they go on holiday ffs.

Or, they could get takeaway / have food at home. Like the poster above said, if you have a dog, you should accept that it restricts you.

It doesn’t restrict you if the eatery is actually dog friendly though. We go on a UK holiday every year, and generally take our dog with us. I realise that there will be some places I can’t go as we have him with us, but I’m not going to not take him to a dog friendly pub or cafe. He’s well behaved and minds his own business.

If people don’t like it, then there are lots of other places for them to go to that aren’t dog friendly. I know there are because I tend to go to them if I don’t have my dog with me, as I agree that badly behaved dogs are a nuisance.

Is people have a problem with places being dog friendly, then they need to raise it with the owners of the business. Not complain about people taking dogs (even well behaved ones) to dog friendly places.

And the daily dog hating threads on mumsnet achieve fuck all either. People still do them though. 😅

Alstroemeria123 · 25/09/2023 09:28

Way less effort than starting a petition, though!

MartinChuzzlewit · 25/09/2023 09:35

Flickersy · 23/09/2023 21:35

Well for a start, rabies is not extant in the UK. So your list starts off rather badly.

Secondly, could you explain why you think guide dogs are magically excluded from the others? Bearing in mind there aren't vaccines for things like norovirus and humans are a much larger vector for norovirus than dogs.

And given that guide dogs are not excluded from e.g. norovirus, then they are just as disgusting as any other dog in your eyes. No?

Edited

I think all dogs are pretty gross but unlike your household pets, guide dogs are absolutely essential for disabled people and are legally entitled to be in places. They are serving a crucial purpose. Doesn’t mean they’re not gross. But they’re so impeccably trained and intelligent they’re definitely less gross than normal dogs

Dear God @MartinChuzzlewit You're on one aren't you.

Having a lovely old fight on one thread and then bounce over to be as rude as possible as quickly as you can to people on this thread.

Even dredging up old threads from "the summer". OK think everyone gets your point.

Not for some of the more 'active' posters who are are on this thread and every other dog hating thread on mumsnet. They're putting the time in. Mentioning no names of course. 😅

The Marketing Manager of the garden centre I go to came back to me this morning, as promised, which is wonderful. It was a long message. In short. Yes, they have a notice outside making it clear that dogs are not allowed (except guide dogs and assistance dogs) and it is clear on their website. However, because other retail venues allow dogs, they expect them to as well, and just bring them in. The rise of staycations means that people just bring them in as they can't leave them. She also intimated that people have used the argument that they can't just leave them in their cars, meaning that they're transferring the problem on to the staff. We've turned up, now it's your problem. It seems that someone, somewhere along the line has said OK, let them wander round the outside area, but don't bring them inside. (This clearly is not happening as the barking, growling dogs were inside.) There was the usual "I hope you will understand the need to balance the needs of all our visitors." and finished off with an apology. So, as I suspected, people have turned up with dogs, staff don't feel empowered to challenge them and from somewhere, an unofficial get-out form of words/policy has been concocted when a dog owner has become 'difficult.'

What’s wrong with referring to old threads 🤣

Also missed the memo about only posting on one thread at at time.

I haven’t been rude to anyone. Disagreeing with dog people does not a rude person make

ASCCM · 25/09/2023 10:59

Dogs shouldn’t be allowed in shops. End of.

I also don’t think they should be allowed in restaurants ( I’m not so bothered about pubs or outside areas is fine)

Dogs are taking over , Along with all the ‘I have a dog but my house don’t smell’ brigade. Because I promise you, it does - you’re just used to it !

Crack on Champ. You've clearly got an axe to grind.

I should have used the word "offend " probably.
My bad.

Ok I have a dog.

Is that randomly aimed at me. ?

Honestly.

sunglassesonthetable · 25/09/2023 11:05

Nothing. In fairness I did as well. But obviously you didn't "froth" ( like on here) just the posters with a different opinion.

I’ve had the last couple of days with my dogs ruined by children. Today, a horrible little boy deliberately kicked a football in my dogs face. Hard. When my dog (who was on a lead) yelped, the little boy and his friend found it hilarious. Mother was on her phone and didn’t even notice.
Two days ago, we were in a restaurant. My dog was under the table, happy with a treat and quiet. A child came crawling up under the table (hands and knees, so I didn’t see them) and decided to try and take my dogs treat. Fortunately, my dog is well trained and passive and I only realise what was happening when a voice from under the table shrieked “give it to me”. I very sternly and loudly told him to “get out” and only then did his mother notice where as was. As he crawled out from under the table, her words were “oh darling, have you been playing”???.
He could very easily have been bitten in that situation, which I’m sure would have been my or my dogs fault. Entitled, selfish, shoddy parents, please keep your children under control. Thank you. And before you tell me that YOUR children don’t behave like that, MY dogs are well trained, well behaved and no, I wouldn’t take them shopping.

We always do the same and our dog never caused any issues and stays under the table.
I really think that many people are incapable of raising and treating pets correctly but the same can be said about many parents and their children.
Like you I’d never even think about taking my dog shopping because it would be such a stressful environment.

WithoutYou · 25/09/2023 11:43

Dogs are taking over

I really hope so. 😅
