Dogs slobbering on products in shops

PurpIish · 23/09/2023 17:21

I know I'm not being unreasonable! But surely some think I am as they allow their dogs to do this.

Took DD(7) shopping today, trip was really spoiled by a few dogs.

Lush. Someone brought their large dog in, this dog was head height to the lower shelves, and had its snout in several of the products. I was about to complain to the staff, but several staff went over and started petting the dog, clearly they were team dog. I don't want my clean bath products with added dog slobber, nor do I want them handled by someone who has just been touching dogs. I will email lush to tell them, but I am posting to please ask dog people to resist taking your dogs into stores where they are going to have their noses in the products.

Next was at the little pop up market. Another dog, in owner's arms, sneezed on the wares (hand-knitted toys). Obviously sneezing happens, but come on, that's just gross.

Third, today, mid-to-large sized dog, cocked his leg on someone's stall. Owner wasn't even watching. Stall -holder has to pack up her table, with dog piss on the table leg. I did tell the owner, of the stall, she was really pissed off, and lamented that it has happened before, but because she's positioned in the outdoor market area, she has no control over people bringing their dogs right up to her stall.

Fourth. Woman had her dog on a long leash. Elderly chap tripped over the leash. Luckily he didn't land on the ground, it was busy so he just half -fell on someone as he stumbled, but he was shaken, and the person he landed on was hurt too. Dread to think how the old man would be doing had he completely fallen on the ground.

Fifth, there was a dog shit in the middle of the outdoor market.

This is all in one day. We were only out for about three hours.

Please please stop bringing dogs everywhere. And if you absolutely must, please watch them vigilantly so that the rest of us aren't impacted by them.

Yanbu - dogs should stay at home, or go to the park. They should not be in the shops.

Yabu. Dogs are still great, better than humans, and comparable to kids.

@paintityellow Like just remind me how you managed to drag "nanny state " into this?

😫

Guffpuff · 24/09/2023 21:17

Have the dogs been included in the DEI agenda yet?

sunglassesonthetable · 24/09/2023 21:20

And just for the record any poll on MN isn't actually a referendum. @paintityellow It indicates what the couple of handful of posters at that moment think. On MN. That's it.

And pointing that out is neither here nor here.

I need to add a story from another incident at a farmers market, which makes me laugh and cry in equal measures whenever I recall it... I saw a woman carrying her small dog around, that had clearly got bored and demanded to come out of his stroller (don't even get me started on that) she was obviously unaware that while holding him, she had her fingers literally placed directed on said dogs rectum, one finger may have even slid dangerously close to going inside at one point, dog looked most uncomfortable, and she stood there for a good few mins basically (and I'm assuming unaware) massaging his asshole with her digits... she then swapped hands, as little Mr Puggywinkle was getting a bit heavy, and picked up a cheese sample with the offending anus fingers and popped it straight into her mouth. I fucking gagged. Of course she had to offer a sample to Mr P, and even he turned his nose up, (probably knowing where those fingers had just been). Obviously this caused roars of laughter and jokes about how Mr P is such a fussy little so and so... give me a fucking break, he doesn't want to sample his own shite like you just did mate.

🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

This is why I don't sample food in such places. Absolutely vile.

Can I assume that your nasty little personalised attacks mean you have run out of valid arguments?

Shock very funny though

Haven't got any arguments to run out of.
I agree dogs shouldn't be in shops 🤷‍♀️

But I don't agree with posters simply piling in just to slag of others, on the basis of some vague generalisations. Nasty little attacks indeed.

Can I assume you don't like disagreement?

jlpth · 24/09/2023 22:06

I'm a dog owner and think the behaviour in the OP is disgraceful. Very common though. I remember when my kids were little and people would take their dogs into the "no dogs" mini playparks and let them run around whilst they sat on the bench with some food. Of course, they didn't notice the dog shitting. Even if they pick up, residues in a kids playpark is disgusting. I remember there was a news story about a 2yo who'd come down the slide and put her hand into dogshit and then onto her face, her eye area blew up like a balloon and they were worried about her sight.

My dog did a runny shit on the pavement a couple of nights ago and I went and washed it with antibac so as not to fuck over anyone else.

Some people in an eatery will be on holiday. They can't leave their dog in their accomadation, so they have no choice but to take their dog with them.

Of course there is a choice, they can put the dog in kennels before they go on holiday ffs.

Or, they could get takeaway / have food at home. Like the poster above said, if you have a dog, you should accept that it restricts you.

HeatherMoores · 24/09/2023 22:41

Dogs are fine in most places.
Not in human operating theatres or places where clinical procedures are being carried out.

Alstroemeria123 · 24/09/2023 22:48

I wouldn’t have thought a, presumably, crowded market was the best place to take dogs, even if they are technically allowed. Surely they’re at risk of getting accidentally trampled or kicked, even ignoring some of the owners letting them piss and shit where they shouldn’t.

I am biased, though, as I am getting increasingly fed up with those dog owners who don’t seem to make any attempt to train their animals and expect to cart them around everywhere. What enjoyment is a dog getting out of going shopping anyway?

sunglassesonthetable · 24/09/2023 23:03

Totally agree.

I think overall it would be quite a stressy experience for all but the most bomb proof of dogs.

Nope, just don't like nasty personalised comments which add nothing to a debate.

Anyhow I wouldn't waste time arguing or associating with someone like you in real life, so why am I doing it on here?

Time for bed.

But it doesn't restrict you if the restaurant allows dogs. Why would we self impose a ban on us taking our dogs somewhere they are allowed?. Confused

If I've said anything nasty please get it removed.

I think you don't like being picked up on anything specific tbh. Fine to dish it out though.

Sleep tight

Have you seen dogs going round John Lewis? They’re loving it!

why do so many threads turn to hating on innocent little children. wtf. it almost seems like a trend to hate kids? comparing your ugly little shitty smelling dogs to actual human beings is the weirdest and most pathetic thing, please don’t have kids of your own if that’s how you feel

The irony is people complaining about children on Mumsnet!

Danielle9891 · 25/09/2023 00:00

My dog has 3 walks a day to the beach, park or forest walks as she is a dog. I don't understand why people feel the need to take them to shops or cafes it's not fair on the dogs or the other customers. I've noticed more and more people taking their dogs to stupid locations since lockdown. Such as a firework display and music festivals and some of these have been during the heatwaves.

Thighdentitycrisis · 25/09/2023 00:26

Do we have an acronym yet?
can I suggest Dog Exclusionary Radical Fascist? 😉

I love dogs but won’t have one because I live alone and sometimes want to go to shops, restaurants, public events, gigs, friends houses, work, hairdressers, doctors etc. etc. Basically all the places not suitable for dogs. I think outside pubs and cafes if under control is ok.

TurkeyTeethLookAwful · 25/09/2023 00:28

I love dogs, and I have dogs, but I agree with you OP.

I don't get why people have to take them everywhere.

I was in a shop a couple of weeks ago and a man walked in with his dog. The dog licked my leg as they walked past. I'm not even keen on my own dogs licking me let alone a random dog. The shop manager asked him to take the dog out as dogs aren't allowed in the shop and he kicked off big time about it.

I also have a friend who, lovely thought she is, regularly brings her dog with her when she comes round. My heart sinks when I open the door when she arrives and the dog is with her. I wouldn't dream of turning up at hers with my dog. Her dog always ends up shitting in my house which she thinks is hilarious but it's always me that ends up cleaning said shit up.

I'm also always getting tripped up in town by dogs on extendable dog leads that just run in front of me.

There's just no need to take dogs out and about all the time!

Having my dog does not restrict me, as we go to eating establishments that welcome dogs.

Dogs are essentially just imprisoned slaves for human amusement. They walk when we decide, they sit when we tell them, they stay quiet and under a table if they want a treat. It's horrible really. No wonder they act like their owners are gods and get over excited when it's walkies or when they see another dog or a child. Their bored shitless most of the time whilst we drag them around shops, go on car journey and sit for hours in cafes. I feel sorry for pet dogs. One day humans will wake up and realise the cruelty of enslaving a species like this.

I agree with this. People claim to be empathetic because they love dogs but if they truly loved them they wouldn’t enslave them, or keep them living in flats, or drag them around shops, or even worse - go shopping and leave them in the car because somehow this is kinder than leaving them at home. Awful.

MartinChuzzlewit · 25/09/2023 08:28

I also hate it on the school run with dogs. The school stopped dogs in the playground ages ago, and have to clamp down on it because people break the rules. What you then have is people standing by the school gates blocking it, watching their kids go in and all the dogs barking sets people off. My DS has a real fear of dogs, and he’s like a dog beacon too if there’s one with a lead off you can guarantee it runs up to DS trying to knock him over, I think he must smell of something they like! Drives me round the bend. “ooh he’s friendly”. Not he’s not. Sniffing a crotch and knocking over kids doesn’t make me think “What a good mate he is” 😂

MartinChuzzlewit · 25/09/2023 08:29

I also have to keep my eye on staff on dog friendly cafes/bakeries because more than once I’ve had to remind staff to wash their hands after stroking a dog before they then go and make my sandwich

MartinChuzzlewit · 25/09/2023 08:55

The first time I encountered a dog friendly restaurant must have been about 9 years ago and the restaurant advertised widely that it accepted dogs. This wasn’t the norm back then. But I went with a friend and nearby there was a Chihuahua sitting under a table. The waitress came down the steps from the kitchen with our food - which was on 2 sizzling skillets. She obviously couldn’t see the floor underneath her. The chihuahua suddenly and inexplicably leapt over from under the table and she went absolutely flying. Blood was coming out her mouth as she just went ‘splat’ as she had the skillets in her hand. She’s lucky she didn’t burn herself! But because the dog got hurt too as she essentially stepped on it the owners were making a big fuss about the dog and basically ignored the bleeding waitress. Luckily my friend with me is a doctor and helped her.

The owner was a dick and made a big fuss of the dog and chastised his staff member for not looking where she was going 🙄 when it all calmed down we also asked if we could please have our food brought as our was all over the floor. Rather than apologising owner was really huffy that obviously he was losing money on our meals - like it was our fault rather than the stupid dog owners!

Ive always wondered by things that are a smelly health and safety hazard are so welcome in places where people eat. I’m sure staff and customers tripping over bolting dogs isn’t uncommon.
