Dogs slobbering on products in shops

I know I'm not being unreasonable! But surely some think I am as they allow their dogs to do this.

Took DD(7) shopping today, trip was really spoiled by a few dogs.

Lush. Someone brought their large dog in, this dog was head height to the lower shelves, and had its snout in several of the products. I was about to complain to the staff, but several staff went over and started petting the dog, clearly they were team dog. I don't want my clean bath products with added dog slobber, nor do I want them handled by someone who has just been touching dogs. I will email lush to tell them, but I am posting to please ask dog people to resist taking your dogs into stores where they are going to have their noses in the products.

Next was at the little pop up market. Another dog, in owner's arms, sneezed on the wares (hand-knitted toys). Obviously sneezing happens, but come on, that's just gross.

Third, today, mid-to-large sized dog, cocked his leg on someone's stall. Owner wasn't even watching. Stall -holder has to pack up her table, with dog piss on the table leg. I did tell the owner, of the stall, she was really pissed off, and lamented that it has happened before, but because she's positioned in the outdoor market area, she has no control over people bringing their dogs right up to her stall.

Fourth. Woman had her dog on a long leash. Elderly chap tripped over the leash. Luckily he didn't land on the ground, it was busy so he just half -fell on someone as he stumbled, but he was shaken, and the person he landed on was hurt too. Dread to think how the old man would be doing had he completely fallen on the ground.

Fifth, there was a dog shit in the middle of the outdoor market.

This is all in one day. We were only out for about three hours.

Please please stop bringing dogs everywhere. And if you absolutely must, please watch them vigilantly so that the rest of us aren't impacted by them.

Yanbu - dogs should stay at home, or go to the park. They should not be in the shops.

Yabu. Dogs are still great, better than humans, and comparable to kids.

I personally can't stand children with dirty, sticky fingers touching things in shops. Each to their own, I suppose.

This is so true.

I worked in a shop and kids touched, poked, picked nose and worked and coughed on so much produce.

People who couldn't shop without drinking a coffee would spill or dump their coffee on shelves.

The worst was when someone had vomited clear liquid all over a Christmas display, which was then touched by some poor customer.

The issue I think, is rather that people without manners have kids without manners and are also likely to have poorly trained dogs.

This above group should be banned from stores.

Oh look… another I hate dog thread. How original.

I don’t think the op hates dogs tho, just dislikes them being in shops. Which I think is reasonable tbh.

ginasevern · 23/09/2023 18:32

Well, I'm equally sick of snotty nosed toddlers pawing over and/or putting goods in their mouths, or running riot and screeching like howler monkeys. The amount of times I've nearly been knocked over or had my foot stamped on by the little darlings as they hurtle up and down the aisles of supermarkets like things possessed whilst the parents are latched to their phones. As for human beings with human rights, that is subjective. Every living creature has just as much right to this planet as we do. What makes us exclusive? We are the biggest scourge on earth.

lapochette · 23/09/2023 18:34

I agree OP and the majority of people I know feel the same. I try to avoid cafes and restaurants that allow dogs but not always possible.

Why are you comparing humans with animals? are you okay? 🥴

Do you live in a world where two wrongs make a right?

Do you like dog piss on your bath bombs?
Each to their own I guess.

alldakatz · 23/09/2023 18:37

I agree, dogs don't need to go to Lush or the farmers' market, what would they get out of the experience? And what is so special about dogs?? You don't see people bringing their cat or hamster to shops or restaurants.

Doggymummar · 23/09/2023 18:37

I've never seen a dog in a shop or a cafe, when did this all start?

marshmallowfinder · 23/09/2023 18:39

TinglingTangling · 23/09/2023 18:23

No it isn't. You can really like dogs but not want them to behave as in the original post. 🙄

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 23/09/2023 18:40

I don’t dislike dogs but they really don’t need to be everywhere. Luckily most dogs I see out are friendly but some you have no idea.

Some people who take dogs everywhere basically they're surrogate children. You could argue that some children are just as badly behaved as dogs when they're eg in pubs, shops, restaurants etc.

It’s been happening for ages, before covid 19. Lots of shops including John Lewis welcome all dogs now.

You do realise that the people that don't want dogs in shops ALSO don't want snotty toddlers pawing at produce and putting things in their mouth.
It is not an either or.

In fact people that have dogs possibly have more unhygienic children too as they are probably covered in dog hair and slobber while they are pawing at the produce.

FrostieBoabby · 23/09/2023 18:42

Totally agree, it's getting harder and harder to eat out as I won't go in to 'dog friendly' places. I must be in the minority though as businesses must see profit in allowing dogs in.

I’d love to leash my DCat and take her to cafes and Lush but fear I’d have no arms left!

DyslexicPoster · 23/09/2023 18:44

I do think it's better if shops and cafes declare themselves dog friendly as then owners are welcome there. There needs to be places that don't allow dogs so there's a choice for everyone.

I saw a dog cock it's leg in a clothes shop as the owner didn't notice. MN swears this never happens. I have kids but I can promise you they have never pissed on a shop display.

I like dogs. I can't stand listening to them barking when I'm eating. My friend likes the dog friendly cafe so I go. But I'd never go without her and they wouldn't miss my trade.

There needs to be more choice. I wouldn't be surprised if they are in supermarkets next.

BathingBeauty · 23/09/2023 18:45

I like dogs. They shouldn’t be in shops. I grew up with dogs and we tied them up outside shops.

I see bodegas in New York often have a cat and I would fully be on board for that though.

MiniBossFromAus · 23/09/2023 18:49

YANBU. Dogs are dogs and do not benefit from being treated like babies.

I love my dog a lot but he does not go everywhere with me - he goes some places and is walked each day.

My personal favourite is dogs in prams!! WTAF 🫣🤯🤪

Atethehalloweenchocs · 23/09/2023 18:49

I take my dog everywhere I can. But she does not get to slobber on goods, or nose around them, pee on things, I pick up her poop and most of the time you would not know she is there. But I have spent years and years training her to be well behaved in public, and I do not take my eyes off her when she is with me. Its not the taking the dogs around that is the issue - its that there are too many people with dogs who should not have them. They are spoiling it for everyone.

renovationheavenandhell · 23/09/2023 18:53

@Buildingthefuture whats this got to do with the OP though???

Lahdedahiam · 23/09/2023 18:54

@AndStand presumably because it was a dog friendly restaurant and the PP wanted to eat?

What a very strange question.

Buildingthefuture · 23/09/2023 18:55

@NoodlesAndRice you claim I am unintelligent but it appears you didn’t or couldn’t actually read my post. No, I would not take my dogs shopping (as I wrote), therefore there is no opportunity for them to piss up a stall, crap in a market or do any of the other things that op complained about. All of which, I do agree, are dreadful. And no I would not allow them to slobber on, well, anything, at home or in public. They eat in a separate space and have faces wiped afterwards. They are not fed from the table so they do not expect scraps and they do not slobber because they are not expecting food.

Threeplusmore · 23/09/2023 18:57

I've used the same garden centre for years and have spent hundreds, possibly thousands? of pounds there. It has a clear no dogs policy on the entrance (apart from assistance dogs). Since the new wave of dog mania, more and more have come in. I assumed the staff did not feel empowered to challenge them. Today had lots of dogs, some barking and growling. It was very noticeable, and threatening. I asked the staff. They said they were allowed in that particular building, but not in the other one. (Of course, there were dogs in the other building, too). I wrote to the company, expressing my disappointment. I got a rapid e-mail back saying they hadn't changed their policy. The No Dogs still was in effect and he was going to look into it on Monday, with the management. So, I think that is the problem really. Where local managers and staff get overwhelmed, they just don't say anything.

Missingmyusername · 23/09/2023 18:58

Well products in shops aren’t clean in any case. Whether handled by people who have been nose picking, licking fingers, handling their private bits/ wiping arses.
Clothes being worn and then returned.

Nobody seems worried about litter, human piss, vomit or what have you but god forbid there be a dog lol. 🫣

Coldbrewnumber2 · 23/09/2023 19:00

100 percent agree. Dogs can be very irritating and it’s selfish and entitled of people to bring them into public spaces.
Some people have allergies for one. I had a very large dog off it’s lead come bounding up to me and my 5 year old son the other day on our walk to school, and it almost knocked him off his feet and terrified the life out of him.
Woman running after him was F-ing and blinding at her dog whilst dragging another one - but it was clearly her fault she couldn’t control it.
