"Cheeky" swimsuits. Just why?

disappearingfish · 21/09/2023 17:22

I get it for posing on the beach, but why do swimwear makers cut the bums off suits otherwise aimed at the "proper swimming" market. I do not want to see bare arses at 0630 under the bad lighting of my local council swimming.

This, for example. Who buys this? www.arenasport.com/en_uk/006660-women-s-swimsuit-arena-mesh-panels-power-back.html

@stardust777 That’s a lovely bikini, but I agree such a pity about the thing style.

Teddleshon · 24/09/2023 22:32

Thong!

I prefer nudity to this. I find teeny tiny clothes attention-seeking and therefore rather tedious. It’s the tease of wearing clothes, but only just. This suit is the perfect example - assume you’re supposed to be taken aback by the arse-out cut at the back in comparison to the covered up front.

By contrast, there is a frankness about actually being naked (or even just topless) that I admire.

That's nice and that's your opinion and choice. Aren't we lucky we live in a society where these women also have theirs.

porridgeisbae · 24/09/2023 22:41

A lot of women are putting a lot of work in getting their bums to look a certain way with squats etc.

Of course some are going to want to show off the results of their work.

@Fallingthroughclouds but it's not just a few extra centimetres of skin, is it, it's right up her arse crack. With some delightful bum curlies poking out one side. I'm not a gynaecologist, a colorectal surgeon, a beautician or a yoni massager. I don't want to see strangers' arses. I think it's just good manners to keep your privates covered in public settings.

A gynaecologist or colorectal surgeon don't go near arse cheeks.
The bum hole would be considered your privates, but not the cheek.

You're the third poster who's made this point. I think it's so true.

It's the mixture of prurience and tweeness - "ooh , look at me, no please, look at me, I'm almost naked"

Her arse her choice. Just like it's your choice not to look. I swim twice a week and I have NEVER ever been forced to look at someone's bottom. I've never been within a foot of one, be it in boxers, briefs or full wetsuit. Why are these women sticking their noses between other's bum cheeks......oh so they can then complain about the extra couple of inches on display and the online puritans can wank over their mutual disapproval and be vilified in this blatant display of judgemental bullshit.

indie12345 · 24/09/2023 23:39

Do some squats so you can wear one too instead of being bitter on the Internet

NatashaDancing · 24/09/2023 23:39

You really have a problem with anyone disliking this ridiculous style of swimwear don't you?

The word "flaunt" has been used approvingly several times on this thread by posters who like this style to describe one of the motivations for wearing it. I expect if you're (general you) "flaunting what you've got" it'd be a disappointment if no one looks. Or looks and mentally eye rolls about how daft it looks. It's certainly not sexy. The mixture of prurience and tweeness prevents that.

.....in your opinion. Your partner may feel differently.

I have a problem with people who try and instil this opinion (sexy swimwear hatred) on others under the pretence of feminism rather than admitting it is just bitterness & snobbery.

These women are probably so confident that they don't give a shit who looks at them or not. This must be a terrifying hurt to peoples inflated self importance, where they think their bitchiness about others appearances matters to anyone other than a bunch of online, insecure, bored trolls.

I know that when I have been feeling at my bestit'll (even if I'm wearing a boiler suit) it has always been about how I feel not about the external gaze. I feel so glowy that I don't notice other people's disdain or admiration. You should try it.

NatashaDancing · 24/09/2023 23:57

I've no idea what you're on about now beyond you seem inordinately angry that any one dare express an unfavourable opinion about this ridiculous looking style of swimming costume.

Your assumption about what my partner might find attractive is bizarre.

Mothership4two · 25/09/2023 00:00

Wishthiswasntmypost · 21/09/2023 17:33

I am constantly infuriated at clothes manufacturers making women look like idiots. The vast majority of bums you see in these are not stunning. They just look frankly like they've got a wedgie. People stare with wry smiles. You never see men wearing ridiculous items of clothing. It really makes us (women)look easily led, and is usually laughable

You never see men wearing ridiculous items of clothing

Just saying you don't like it = fine

Denigrating women for wearing it = not fine

I was expressing the fact that not everyone shares your opinion. The people who do are being bitchy, the people who don't are being supportive of women. 'Might' is not an assumption btw it's a suggestion. Your mum also 'might' also think these swimsuits are OK and preferable to the ranting they incur.

I don't care if you don't like dungarees or hoodie or swimsuits. I care about the sneering attitudes of the women on here that hate the swimsuits and therefore it seems the women that wear them l.

Also it's very clear what I'm on about, but it's your choice whether or not to be obtuse. Let's just agree we have a difference of opinion.

Teddleshon · 25/09/2023 00:38

But it’s ok for you to label women who happen to not like these swimsuits as bitter?

What would you think of a man doing lengths wearing a Borat style mankini out of interest?

Fallingthroughclouds · 25/09/2023 00:39

There is a big difference between "I don't like them so I won't wear them" and "I don't like them so she shouldn't wear them". Imagine if someone said that about your skirts. Hopefully you would tell them to fuck right off.

I wouldn't give a shit, because it's non of my business and I'm not body obsessed. OK in all honesty I may giggle a bit, but I don't think revealing swimsuits are the same as in they are not designed for humour. I certainly wouldn't try and demean the owner. Come on, the people giving the negative comments think they are better than these women, whereas I would think it is amusing, yet commendable that borat had the balls to rock this in his local pool. However it's really not comparable, but I am sure I'll be berated for it...fine I can take it. And I'm not calling them bitter because they dislike a swimsuit, no one is suggesting they wear or buy one. I suggest they are bitter for insulting those who CHOOSE to wear one. Big difference.

If you are being snide about people's fashion choices, their physical appearance, emotional status and morality, as has been insulted on here then expect a little, if not a lot of critism. I have to wonder what kind of pedestal they/you put yourselves on?

You're very aggressive to anyone who has a different opinion from you. You were very aggressive on an S&B thread as well.

Mothership4two · 25/09/2023 01:52

Here is a depressing selection of comments aimed at women by mainly other women (I assume) on this thread📧

not very strong minded
care about looking good for males
low standards
loved the male attention (13-14 yos)
fat hairy arse waddling
flabby arses
look hilarious none…. are serious swimmers
look like idiots
exhibitionist
unedifying
choosing to flaunt their body
aim for zero modesty, show men everything you've got
some women are easily led
an exhibitionist forcing your fetish on other people
showing their private parts
women who fall for this type of sexualised fashion
completely ridiculous and deeply unattractive
the kinds of women in real life who troll around with their buttocks hanging out
it's indecent
behaving and dressing like slappers
a gradual erosion of decency.
they do it to show off their bums,
fatty backside
very large arse… revolting… vile
very porny

Plus many sneery comments about eye rolling/laughing behind backs of women who presumably are body positive enough to wear a thong swimsuit.

Not to mention silly comments (for dramatic effect I assume) about being able to see a woman's snatch/cervix/tonsils - impossible unless they are doing a very weird swimming stroke! And I take with a huge pinch of salt that OP was actually able to see another woman's pubic hairs at her local swimming pool. Sorry OP just don't believe it.

Some of these comments are completely OTT IMO and sad to see here on the Mumsnet forum.

Mothership4two · 25/09/2023 01:52

And today saw a squatting man’s extreme builder’s bum – basically a half-moon. Didn’t gag/faint, averted my eyes and got on with my day.

mathanxiety · 25/09/2023 03:08

Ilefttownonsaturday · 21/09/2023 17:57

All of these things are designed for the male gaze and women have been conned to think it's liberating. Unfortunately, it's another form of exploitation and modern culture has been sexualised so much that if you don't buy into it people think you're weird.

Agree.

At the last summer Olympics the German women's artistic gymnastics team wore full body leotards in protest against the expectation that female gymnasts should willingly turn themselves into half-naked objects of male titillation.

I lived in Spain and this sort of thing is common. As is topless bathing and they have lots of nudist beaches. And it’s women of all ages, shapes and sizes who go topless and nude. They just don’t care. And I’ve seen such swimming costumes in their public pools too (which are outside and really cool btw).

I much prefer their way of thinking than this thread. Who cares if someone’s bum is on show? Maybe if we relaxed a bit we’d be a bit more like the Spanish and they are MUCH more body positive over there. Maybe if we stopped judging our teenagers wouldn’t have so many issues. Who cares what others are wearing.

Yes, they're so enlightened that the head of the football association recently resigned after causing an uproar when he assaulted one of the team that won the women's world cup.

And recently in a town of about 30,000 it has emerged that young boys aged probably 11 to 13 had been using AI to generate naked body images and sticking the heads if their female classmates on top, then having a good time sharing the images online.

Is that what you mean by body positivity?

Or do you need to give your head a wobble?

sep135 · 25/09/2023 04:23

I hear what you're saying but I think it's natural to see an outfit (particularly one that's a bold statement) and think someone looks nice or that it's not especially flattering.

I'd say I'm pretty body positive. I don't use filters and I'm happy to wear my bikini at the beach despite not having Kate Moss's figure. But I don't think the arse out bikini is either flattering or particularly appropriate. No issue if people feel differently and enjoy wearing them, that's the joy of personal expression.

Lumpydumpy380 · 25/09/2023 07:01

Sorry I’m going to be causing up a shit storm in this thread 😂 …. But I’ve actually got several swim suits like this and I’m overweight 😂😂 I couldn’t give a shit what people think of me if I’m honest. I will be enforcing that motto into my kids too. Aslong as you’re comfortable it doesn’t matter. I’m actually going on hokiday next month and I will be taking them with me. My husband likes seeing my bare arse I couldn’t give a toss if no one else does. It’s a bum we all have them 🤷🏻‍♀️

Saying people look ridiculous is just mean, so please don't pretend you're saintly. I dont like the though of being aggressive though so I apologise and will try and address that.

Thanks for letting me know that you're monitoring me however. It's nice to know that I've inspired such a following 😉
