Friend has said she couldn’t be friends with me if I took the job

I’ve been offered a really fascinating job that would involve a lot of travel and meeting lots of interesting people.

It involves working for a former politician. Not directly but closely. I don’t support most of their views but the role is independent of their politics.

I have a small group of close friends. I told one friend and she’s said she couldn’t be friends with me if I took it, which has really dampened things. It also comes with a 20% wage increase. I want to take the role but I don’t want to lose one of my oldest friends. I’m really not sure what to do.

The projection on this thread is ludicrous.

You have no standards. We get it.

I have plenty of standards when it comes to my OWN life.
I don’t walk around like the Stasi telling other people what to think and do. Big difference.

This whole thing entirely depends on who the person is. Doesn't mean OP is under any obligation to tell us, but no actual answer or advice can really be given without knowing that.

Bored1000 · 29/09/2023 13:19

I personally don’t care who my friends work for, most people are only working to pay a mortgage/ provide as best they can for their children and and if that means working for people / an organisation that you don’t align with their morals / principals so be it , I can look past that

Potiphar · 29/09/2023 16:46

Well you made your decision and now you have to live with the consequences.
Hope it was worth it.

BTW it’s fairly obviously the Tony Blair Institute isn’t it? An Institution with a lot of ill-gained moolah to throw about, headed by an “ex MP” who is a controversial enough figure to make someone’s oldest friend refuse to speak to her? Who else could it possibly be?

I thought that too. A lot of people think he should be in prison.

Aavalon57 · 30/09/2023 13:00

There’s far worse people than Tony Blair. But your friend’s reaction seems so extreme, I’m really curious to know who it is now. Where does your new employer sit on the political spectrum?

HRTQueen · 30/09/2023 13:31

Telling someone you can no longer continue the friendship if they decide to work for a person you find immoral isn’t controlling their life

it’s putting boundaries around your own

Who you choose to surround yourself with is your OWN life.

And I don't think you know what the stasi were 👍 I'm pretty sure they didn't get their reputation through taking a step back from friendships

2mummies1baby · 30/09/2023 16:50

I've got to be honest, it really depends on who the politician is. If it's Nick Griffin then I'd very much see her point.

Notagreatyear · 30/09/2023 17:30

Tell her to do one. She is nasty.
