To think this just sums up XL Bully owners?

Look North last night. Peter Levy is interviewing a woman who owns two XL Bullys. Both cropped and docked which she says happened in another country before she got them (yeah, course it did).

Peter asks her “so why do people want these dogs in the first place, what’s the attraction for you?”

She replies “well I wanted dogs that were good with kids and famines and stuff so we got XL Bully’s cos they’re great with kids”

Wtf? If I didn’t know better I’d swear this was a spoof interview. Good with kids and families?? These dogs have been responsible for the most human deaths in dog attacks in the UK in recent years!!! Just last week an 11 year CHILD was attacked by one of these dogs … so when looking for a child friendly dog she bypasses the golden retriever etc and goes for the breed with the biggest track record of killing humans …

He then asked her if she will comply with the muzzle when the laws are changed - she said NO.

Then the cherry on the cake … he asked her “would you leave your child alone with these dogs?” And she said “yes, absolutely. I leave my two year old alone with them all the time whilst I’m busy making dinner etc”

Honestly the interview couldn’t have been any more gobsmacking.

This just sums up XL bully owners doesn’t it? Thick as pig shit with no regard to their own safety or the safety of others.

Animal shelters inundated with requests to home XL Bullies after ban
mol.im/a/12544299

Bored on a late running train 🙄

I read this earlier, this was the line that worried me the most:

We physically haven't got the space to take on a dog that may take us months to rehome, or if you get a biter - nobody is going to want to take that on easily.

Surely the don’t try and re-home the ‘bitey’ ones?!! If so the problem may get worse before it gets better.

It appears that many of the XL bully owners are now trying to 're-home' or hand off to rescues. I don't know who would want to re home them but if they did surely that is a risk, to break the bond with their previous owners. It's a disaster waiting to happen

Really sad for the dogs

(I support the ban)

I know someone who had a german shepard that bit her and she managed to get it into a shelter rather than having it put down. Not sure if anyone has taken it on now but it was still there a year later. She had a young child and so wouldn't keep the dog even though she loved it.

I also have another friend with a Husky cross and I've only been in her home once because the dog wouldn't stop barking at me and it scared me to death.

I'm much more wary of wolf type dogs than staffies and bullies etc.. most staffies I've met are really social whereas the huskies/akitas/german shepherds seem anti social. And literally one step away from having a pet wolf.

You do realise that the breed closest to the wolf is the little shitzu?

You're going to need to provide a reliable source for that claim

eralclow · 21/09/2023 19:18

I know a woman at school whose baby was killed by one of these dogs.
The dog was never left alone with the
Kids at all and had been a family pet for five years or more.
However. The baby was crawling round the room and the dog randomly locked its jaws around the baby before mum could pick him up.
Sadly the baby died! Mum always said the dog was soft and good with the kids. However, the weather was hot and the dog was grizzly. Who knows. Not a risk worth taking.

I support the ban but I can see this leading to welfare issues. Abandoned dogs, possibly roaming the streets. Scared and disoriented a recipe for anxiety and attack. There needs to be a clear plan put in place asap so the owners know what to expect and have options available to them.

That may be a real possibility. I suspect many aren't chipped, some will never have seen a vet because the owners will not have wanted to say why their dog had no ears. So a fair few could be dumped on the street and no way to trace the owners.

I'm wondering if the OP actually meant the Shiba Inu? That's the dog whose DNA was found to be closest to a wolf in a big study carried out.

Quite a lot different to a Shih Tzu although the names sound a bit similar!

No, it's the Shi Tzu as well. It's an ancient breed and seems to have retained more of its ancient DNA than some other breeds. Apparently it's more inclined to howl when it hears a wolf howl, rather than bark, as other breeds might. The Pekingese is also pretty close to the wolf, for the same reason - ancient breed.

That article is proof that you are mistaken. The Shi Tzu is numbered 1 of 8 but that doesn't mean it is closest. The article says it is one of the closest but huskies and malmutes are closer.

That's really interesting!!!

I'm not sure how accurate that article is saying that the Shih Tzu shares the most DNA (other than Huskies and Malamutes) though as it doesn't quote a source. The previous article cites the actual study into canine DNA that was undertaken (CanMap by UCLA) which came to the conclusion that Shiba Inu was the closest genetically.

It sounds like Shih Tsu is one of the closest, but not the actual closest maybe?

I've got a Shih Tzu x Bichon cross, and he's adorable at home but he bloody HATES other people. And other dogs. Very territorial and protective, and from what I understand from other Zuchon owners, their dogs are similar. So I can well believe there's some strong wolf DNA there.....!

MrTiddlesTheCat · 21/09/2023 20:38

I'm surprised they can say any dog is closer than another as I always thought all dogs were still 100% wolf, just cuter, friendlier ones. And that is why dogs can still breed with wolves.

But maybe I dreamt that.

BardRelic · 21/09/2023 20:42

@MrTiddlesTheCat It was the OP who claimed the Shi Tzu was closest. If you go back and read my post, you'll see I'm quite circumspect in my language. I'm aware that it's one of the closer ones. I'm also aware that 'close' is a difficult concept. After all, humans and chimps share 98.8% of their DNA - so 1.2% is doing some heavy lifting. Well, maybe not so heavy in some cases.

SpidersAreShitheads · 21/09/2023 21:08

@BardRelic - "not so heavy in some cases" 😅😅😅

@MrTiddlesTheCat - dog and wolf DNA isn't identical but it's still very close, which is why they can breed. The wolf dogs - half wolf, half dog - are said to be very dangerous as they still retain the wild instincts of the wolf, but look like a domestic dog.

The only way they can say is via DNA comparisons, which is when they apparently found the Shiba Inu was the closest - but there are many ancient breeds, including the Shih Tzu which are also very close. In fairness, there might have been an updated study since UCLA but I haven't seen one. The other articles are all a bit vague on specific sources.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 21/09/2023 21:14

@MrTiddlesTheCat
Wolves are Canis lupus and dogs are Canis lupus familiaris and can breed with each other.

Usually they're purposely bred to make hybrids such as the Sarloos or Czechoslovakian wolf dogs.

That's not really how genetics work. You can have the same number of chromosomes and be close enough to interbreed and produce fertile offspring, but have substantial differences in your DNA. Indeed, evolution relies on those differences. It's those that are selected for, or against. Look up stuff on the coywolf - a wolf, dog, coyote mix that's thriving in north America.

CaspianPlover · 21/09/2023 21:42

I think I would rather take my chances with Shih Tzu than an XL Bully any day!

SomeCatFromJapan · 21/09/2023 22:13

There are greater and greater numbers of Coywolves too (coyote/wolf hybrids) and some cases domestic dog/fox crosses.

It's like the start of a spoof horror film. Maybe Simon Pegg will save the day with a snooker cue.

MakeAListTheySaid · 21/09/2023 22:45

Just shows how stupid they are, what could be possibly go wrong with so many xls and kids. 🙄

It's like the ones that are encouraging taking their xls to the protests. No responsible owner would take their dog to a gathering where feelings will be running so high. I feel so sorry for any dog with an owner like this.

I saw on tiktok that many owners are encouraging others to go to the doctors and lie about having mental health issues, and then declare that their xl is their therapy dog so that their dog can't be taken. Confused

The mentality of these people.
