To think this just sums up XL Bully owners?

Look North last night. Peter Levy is interviewing a woman who owns two XL Bullys. Both cropped and docked which she says happened in another country before she got them (yeah, course it did).

Peter asks her “so why do people want these dogs in the first place, what’s the attraction for you?”

She replies “well I wanted dogs that were good with kids and famines and stuff so we got XL Bully’s cos they’re great with kids”

Wtf? If I didn’t know better I’d swear this was a spoof interview. Good with kids and families?? These dogs have been responsible for the most human deaths in dog attacks in the UK in recent years!!! Just last week an 11 year CHILD was attacked by one of these dogs … so when looking for a child friendly dog she bypasses the golden retriever etc and goes for the breed with the biggest track record of killing humans …

He then asked her if she will comply with the muzzle when the laws are changed - she said NO.

Then the cherry on the cake … he asked her “would you leave your child alone with these dogs?” And she said “yes, absolutely. I leave my two year old alone with them all the time whilst I’m busy making dinner etc”

Honestly the interview couldn’t have been any more gobsmacking.

This just sums up XL bully owners doesn’t it? Thick as pig shit with no regard to their own safety or the safety of others.

There are some very rude people on this thread, particularly in respect of the comments directed at @Twistedex, who is simply trying to answer the questions put to her. What happened to polite disagreement? There is absolutely no need for the snarky, personal comments. As has been pointed out, we have been down this road before with several others breeds, and it’s astonishing that the OP, who allegedly owns a Dobe, is so prepared to make such sweeping statements about dog ownership.

Look at the list posted above regarding dog attack fatalities and tell me how many times the Dobermann comes up

I think that it's terrible that you categorise these owners as being of being of lessor intelligence OP! That is simply not true. Our local library is awash with these dogs meekly sat outside whilst the owners emerge carrying tomes of scientific periodicals and copies of The Economist.

MotherofGorgons · 19/09/2023 18:59

I have read most of the thread and I still don't understand why anyone needs an XL bully. All I have got is ' It's the owners, not the dogs". Which is the same argument made in the US for assault rifles.

Fizbosshoes · 19/09/2023 19:00

Pizzanight

I saw an interview the other day with a man who was upset and worried about what he will now do with his litter of puppies complaining that responsible owners should not be targeted. He was then asked how his Bully became pregnant, he explained it was an accidental pregnancy after his dog with left with his sister's unneutered male..

I saw that story of how heartbroken he was that they might all be destroyed (I think there was 18 puppies!!) And the story of the accidental mating with conveniently enough another xl bully.
I don't have a dog but are you not supposed to let them near other dogs when they're on heat if you don't want puppies (or get it spayed? )

TooManyThingsToRemember · 19/09/2023 19:01

From listening to the owners on tiktok, it seems, they seem to have them

'to protect the kids innit' because they're the 'most gentle dogs ever innit' and some total nonsense about 'nanny dogs...man, innit'.

Also lots of blah, blah, blah 'bossy bloodiline, man' and how they all have the 'best trained dogs ever d'ya know what I mean innit man' and 'chihuahuas kill people man'.

🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 My eyes may never come back down. Fucking idiots.

theemmadilemma · 19/09/2023 16:50

I can almost guarantee they went and found the most hideous owner they could to add to their biased interview then.

Did they then go and talk to a responsible owner, who trains and shows their dog, I bet not, because it doesn't support that pov.

Owners are the problem.

There are thick owners with all different kinds of dog breeds, the only difference is those dogs don’t turn into killing machines at the drop of a hat.. even the best owners could have a lovely friendly bully XL until the day it snaps, all dogs have that in them, and I’m sure most dog owners have experienced that to some degree with their own dogs, but not all dogs have the capability/weight/power to maim and kill.

so while the ‘it’s not the dog, it’s the owners’ rages on, the fact remains that it is the dog that ultimately attacks and kills, because it’s in its instincts to do that, more strongly than other breeds.

I have three dogs and avoid them like the plague, and staffies for that matter, lovely as they can be, for the sole reason that you just can’t read their body language at all, they are ‘still’ when approached, and there’s no way to read that effectively, so I avoid them all together.

they could burst into excited wiggles, or burst into an aggressive attack .. I’d never put my dogs at risk to bother finding out which.

Here's the complete list from 2020 onwards of dog bite fatalities in the UK:

Staff Bull Terrier and Mastiff Cross
Chow Chow and German Shepherd Cross
Staff Bull Terrier Cross
American Bulldogs
Bully XL
Bully XL
British Bulldogs
Husky
Bully XL
Rottweiler
Cane Corso
Bully XL
Bully XL/Italian Mastiff
Bully XL
American Bulldog
Bully XL and Cane Corso Cross
American Pit Bull Terrier
American Bulldog or Pitbull/Husky Cross (unconfirmed)
Unconfirmed
Bully XL
Unconfirmed
Rottweilers
Bully XL

Now consider the fact that Bully XL dogs apparently make up less than 1% of the dogs in the UK.

PaulaZackMayo · 19/09/2023 19:09

@sandyhappypeople I totally agree. I can safely say that the worst my dogs could do were bite me. Neither have the potential to kill me.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 19/09/2023 19:10

Shadowchaser · 19/09/2023 17:28

Every time I see these owners they don’t seem to have a clue about body language, genetics or behaviour. I just want to scream are you deluded when they spout the inevitable ‘deed not breed’ or ‘nanny dog’

Of all of the hundreds of dogs they want a mutant frog looking creature, usually with its ears cut off with scissors in some scum bags backyard. Why?

If they want to risk their own lives fine but keep it well away from my family, I don’t want to pay for your stupidity.

Yeah, they are clueless. I'm fed up of seeing videos on FB of dogs displaying "I am getting stressed body language" and seeing their owner totally clueless to it and posting to demonstrate how child-friendly their dog.

I will judge anyone who chooses to buy one of these dogs. I judge them as someone who knows nothing about dog breeding and genetics and desirable traits and they particularly don't know anything about dogs' health. There is absolutely NO reason whatsoever why these backyard breeders should have picked out the muscliest, oversized dogs to breed from in the first place. They did not NEED to create these Frankenstein versions. What were the actual reasons to do this? Because it's not good for the dog, so I'm failing to see the reason for creating these oversize versions of dogs, other than for intimidation purposes,, or because they want people to think they're hard, or they like the attention of people looking at them when out, or because they want to breed from them to make money, or demonstrate to others that they've had enough money to buy one.

I will judge anyone who thinks they have an animal of this size and strength under control. They are NEVER under control, simply due to their very size and strength. The fact is, if that dog turns, nothing short of a taser, or a knife would get it off someone. It's not possible to "call it off" once they have gone into attack mode as it's like the red mist descends and that's all they can think of.

@Ozarkz that”s not the point I am making, and you know that.

MotherofGorgons · 19/09/2023 19:11

Why do people's kids need so much protecting? Are they in the Ukraine or something?

Twilight7777 · 19/09/2023 19:11

Christ I wouldn’t leave my dog with children alone and she’s a tiny toothless creature. These people are stupid to say they’d leave the dog alone with a 2 year old especially!

Off topic, but ‘the Ukraine’ is the Russia styling. It’s just Ukraine.

@Twistedex
You will not be able to get your point across on here, as some people are gullible and swallow everything that the media or some random person off Facebook says.

There was a reason they interviewed this woman and not the teacher or doctor who also owns them.

Whats ironic is that these people obviously can’t remember the hysteria of the staffy just a few years ago.
Every newspaper had someone wearing a tracksuit, smoking a joint with a staffy on a chain, saying how they should be banned etc.

When I was younger it was the same for German shepherds.

Indeed

In my childhood years it was the Dobermann

MotherofGorgons · 19/09/2023 19:14

It seems like some people feel it’s a part of their cultural identity to be a champion of this type of dog, it’s really weird. Like XL Bullys are some sort of downtrodden underdog (no pun intended) and if they were to admit to any doubts about them being safe, it would be a sign of weakness or almost a betrayal, letting a whole community down.

So they simply cannot and never will shift.

This is exactly it.

Creditscoredrop · 19/09/2023 19:16

Twistedex · 19/09/2023 16:19

Yes, that's right, because every single XL Bully owner must be exactly the same 🙄

Don't be so bloody offensive and ignorant.

They probably are all the same though. Why would you want a breed like that? I don’t think nice law abiding citizens want them or own them. If you want a family dog what is wrong with a Labrador or any other breed that is not responsible for attacking/killing humans?

Ozarkz · 19/09/2023 19:18

Greenshake · 19/09/2023 19:11

@Ozarkz that”s not the point I am making, and you know that.

No but it is my point …

Yes Dobermanns have a reputation - but statistically that reputation is undeserved.

XL bullies have a reputation and statistically that reputation IS deserved.

My hairdresser has 2 of these bully dogs. Only her husband walks them (in case something happens that she can't deal with, she said !). They are never left alone with children, according to her, just in case...
So they have two dogs that they KNOW and recognise are a potential risk to children and to other dogs or even people. Yet a few months ago she said they are thinking of breeding them !!
She really is properly dense, but I like her all the same. I just hope her stupidity doesn't wreck someone's life.

Willmafrockfit · 19/09/2023 19:21

on my fb someone put a picture of a bull terrier - saying Owners not Dogs.
what has the bull terrier got to do with it?

Oldsu · 19/09/2023 19:22

The FB Group I belong to (and I don't own one myself BTW) are of course very concerned and worried about the ban because we know with the Pitbull types BSL does not work and it will not work with Bullies either, within 1/2 hour of the ban being announced some very good information was posted, which I would say 95% of the group I am in will support, this incudes insurance, muzzle training, de- sexing, wearing body cams when out with their Bullies and having the number of at least one of the Legal organisations who support people who have had their dogs seized (usually under threat) by the police already added to their phone contacts. There will be a fight back about this and it wont be the drug dealing thugs (they will just get another breed) it will be from the already responsible dog owners who will go the extra mile and obey the law to keep their Bullies (or large Staffy Boxer cross and any other mix who is NOT a Bully but will be seen to be one by the ignorant)
