To think this just sums up XL Bully owners?

Look North last night. Peter Levy is interviewing a woman who owns two XL Bullys. Both cropped and docked which she says happened in another country before she got them (yeah, course it did).

Peter asks her “so why do people want these dogs in the first place, what’s the attraction for you?”

She replies “well I wanted dogs that were good with kids and famines and stuff so we got XL Bully’s cos they’re great with kids”

Wtf? If I didn’t know better I’d swear this was a spoof interview. Good with kids and families?? These dogs have been responsible for the most human deaths in dog attacks in the UK in recent years!!! Just last week an 11 year CHILD was attacked by one of these dogs … so when looking for a child friendly dog she bypasses the golden retriever etc and goes for the breed with the biggest track record of killing humans …

He then asked her if she will comply with the muzzle when the laws are changed - she said NO.

Then the cherry on the cake … he asked her “would you leave your child alone with these dogs?” And she said “yes, absolutely. I leave my two year old alone with them all the time whilst I’m busy making dinner etc”

Honestly the interview couldn’t have been any more gobsmacking.

This just sums up XL bully owners doesn’t it? Thick as pig shit with no regard to their own safety or the safety of others.

I have to admit I am quite partial to a big chunky dog. I think so xl bullies look lovely Blush I would never own a big chunky dog though, even a dog like a St. Bernard or Bernese because I am just not confident enough that I would be able to stop them if I needed to so I have an old toothless rescue pug who can't even chew a sausage instead. Not long ago when I was out walking said dog a woman on the opposite side of the street almost got yanked in front of a car when her lab suddenly decided to join me and pug.

I don't think enough people do actually sit and think if my dog decides he is going to run off and do something am I strong enough to prevent them from doing it? This goes for all large breeds.

How many irresponsible X bully owners go to vets?

I thought this too.

That could explain why all the XL Bullies seen at the vet are "big softies" etc etc. The ones that present the biggest threat are probably never seen, hence the discrepancy between the experiences of vet staff and the multiple fatalities in the news.

Iheartpizza · 19/09/2023 18:36

Oh Christ I've heard it all now. Labradors make up the XL Bully!

crumblingschools · 19/09/2023 18:36

@Twistedex you say you know the bloodline of your dog but you got her from friends who were irresponsible enough to have an accidental litter of pups, so how do you know the bloodline

I think that it's terrible that you categorise these owners as being of being of lessor intelligence OP! That is simply not true. Our local library is awash with these dogs meekly sat outside whilst the owners emerge carrying tomes of scientific periodicals and copies of The Economist.

😂

I'm surprised the Queen didn't swap her corgis for a couple.

I recently saw a very lovely older gentleman pulled off his feet and down some really rather steep stairs by his lovely (large and exuberant) golden retriever. Lovely chap. Lovely dog.

He had 1/10th of bugger all control over that dog. Thankfully he bounced.

@Iheartpizza

What breeds make up the XL bullies that you know?

mbosnz · 19/09/2023 18:39

Oh believe me, we get irresponsible dog owners of every breed! Those ones are the ones who have 'rescued' a dear wee doggy, despite them already having multiple pets that they can't afford to properly feed, flea and worm treat, or pay for vet treatment. And they nearly always get the complex bloody breeds!

And so many of them are aghast when they find that yes, they too, are expected to, and need to, pay for treatment of their pets. Because if we want to stay open and be there to treat their pets, we do need to be paid. . .

I agree with people saying a lot if it is bad ownership, but I'd be a liar if I said I wasn't shit scared when I have to walk past one off leash at the park, I live in a bit of a rough area and there's enough of them off leash with the type of stereotypical type of owner who think their dog growling and snarling and scaring people is hilarious .

I no longer walk my dog in certain places and I can see why so many many people don't like them because a lot of them fall into the hands of a certain type of person.

I've seen accidental litter used on puppy for sale listings, what does it actually mean? Not a trick question I'm just wondering as I only know two person irl who used this term, one when they left their unspayed cane corso bitch with their intact cane corso dog alone and didn't realise the bitch was in season and another when their in season bitch got out the house by accident, they terminated that pregnancy though because they had no idea about the temperament or health of the father and didn't want to risk producing puppies with bad breeding.

Of course I can't speak for all accidental litters, but in the case of my friends' dogs, the dog chewed his way out of his crate to get to their bitch who was in heat while they were out... never underestimate a horny dog 😂

SeriouslySeriouslySeriously · 19/09/2023 18:41

I also feel bad for the xl bullies that their owners seem to putting a muzzle on and recording the dogs discomfort for social media with captions like "heartbreaking to watch my baby like this" why would they do that instead of slowly introducing the dog to muzzle like plenty of other people are. I see a lot of people posting tutorials and tips on how to muzzle train without stressing the dog out but a few seem to be just whacking it on, recording a tik tok and then blaming other people for the dog being stressed.

Being clever and ‘university educated’ isn’t going to protect you from an XL Bully attack

Nobody suggested this was the case.

Iheartpizza · 19/09/2023 18:42

What breeds make up the XL bully that I know?

Off the top of my head....

American pitbull
American bulldog
American Staffordshire bull terrier
Staffordshire bull terrier
Perhaps some mastiffs

But Labradors? No. Come on.

How far back can you trace your dog’s bloodline? Not having a go, just generally interested. Do you know if Kimbo is a part of your dog’s genetic makeup?

Current list of reasons for owning this sort of dog:

  1. It makes you look hard.
  2. You acquired it by accident.

Any more?

Edited

You deal drugs and need to keep the wrong sort from the door?

My cat lives a life of luxury, fed the best food on demand, doesn’t go hungry. He still goes hunting because it is an inbuilt instinct.
These dogs have the instinct to kill and no matter how well trained and looked after they are, that instinct is still there. Anyone who has one of these dogs and believes it won’t ever snap is at best naive.
Intelligence and common sense don’t necessarily go hand in hand.

Fizbosshoes · 19/09/2023 18:49

There are some irresponsible moron dog owners, not all of them have XL bullies
Not all XL bully owners are irresponsible morons.

But unfortunately there is often a crossover

Shadowchaser · 19/09/2023 18:49

The XL bully is not made up of Labrador crosses.

Almost all, if not all, of the foundation DNA is American pit bull terrier. Many of them have an inbreeding coi of over 30% which is pretty vile in itself- one of the most prolific studs ‘Kimbo’ was produced from a brother/sister mating.

whatwasthatgrandma · 19/09/2023 18:50

in 2 years to June 2023, XL bullys were responsible for HALF the deaths by dog in the UK. HALF.

And they are not bloody labradors.

ehupo7 · 19/09/2023 18:53

Well I think the interviewee was definitely selected with an audience reaction in mind.

No idea if she’s representative or not, but I tend to agree that anyone who has sought out one of these dogs is irresponsible and possibly not all that sharp.

WotNoUserName · 19/09/2023 18:54

Stupidity then, to have a dog and a bitch that aren't neutered or spayed. It's not bloody funny them having an "accidental" litter.

I'd ban breeding of almost all dogs, like those poor pugs who can't breathe properly, but oh, they look cute. No, they don't. They look ugly and not like they should look, because stupid humans bred them into ridiculous proportions. Maybe we should be euthanising the stupid bloody humans instead, the ones who cause this mess.

Greenshake · 19/09/2023 18:55

There are some very rude people on this thread, particularly in respect of the comments directed at @Twistedex, who is simply trying to answer the questions put to her. What happened to polite disagreement? There is absolutely no need for the snarky, personal comments. As has been pointed out, we have been down this road before with several others breeds, and it’s astonishing that the OP, who allegedly owns a Dobe, is so prepared to make such sweeping statements about dog ownership.

Yes and one of Kimbo’s descendants went on to kill a little girl. The attacks on humans continued down Kimbo’s bloodlines even after Kimbo’s owner was told to stop breeding him as the offspring were unstable. Of course he continued … more attacks on humans followed. At one point almost an entire litter was PTS after one by one they all started turning on humans. Most of the XL bullies in the UK are from this same bloodline

I would say that if the people made a conscious and informed decision to own an XL, they are irresponsible.

So I do blame the owners, they simply should not own an XL.

Frequency · 19/09/2023 18:56

I met a couple of XL Bullies in a tourist town last week. One was in a shop, owned by the shop owner. She was 7 years old and friendly but they kept her in a large pen so she didn't scare the customers. The bloke who owned her was a friendly, goth-type who worked as a sculptor.

The other one was just a normal, middle-aged bloke who had a bit of giggle because DD's newest Chi who she's only had for a week or two so has not been fully socialised yet was making a show of itself barking at his XL Bully from the safety of its pushchair (it was a very hot day and the pup is very young hence the buggy). His dog didn't bat an eyelid.

Locally, I see one regularly who is owned by two teenage lads. They look exactly like you'd expect an XL Bully owner to look like but their dog has been to the local training club and passed its canine good citizen bronze award and is working towards its silver award. It's walked twice a day, always on lead, and is trained to walk to heel. They always ask if their dog is allowed to greet other dogs.

The only dog I ever have regular issues with is a morbidly obese black lab. It's a friendly enough thing but it's elderly female owner either has no control over it or opts not to control it. It has a habit of walking under my large breed and getting tangled in his lead or caught on the underside of his harness.
