Airbnb bed not king size

ViaRia01 · 18/09/2023 06:06

Currently away in an Airbnb, we checked in last night.

As soon as I got into bed I realised it was a double, not a king size. King size was stated in the listing before we booked. I checked the listing again and it says king size.

AIBU to say something to the hosts and what (if anything) could I expect from them to compensate?

We have a king at home so we are noticing the difference. We can manage perfectly well in a double but I feel shortchanged and misled. There is a good chance we would not have booked this place if it had been listed as a double.

what do you think?

At least you got a bed. I travelled over 3 hours to deliver my youngest to University in Cheltenham on Saturday, had a place booked for me and my dog to stay the night through Expedia- when I got there it was all locked up. Waited an hour outside. No contact details in the 3 confirmation emails I'd received. Booking website phone was an answerphone.
Ended up having to drive home - spent 12 hours on the road and had to cancel the meet up with a very old Friend.
The property owner has apologised after I left a review and offered discount on another stay. I think that's reasonable

The bed is about the only thing I would complain about...or fibs about being able to park closeby! Husband and I both have arthritis and have a superking bed at home. We wont even stay with relatives who only have a double, we instead check into a hotel.

I always double check with the owners of airbnb and will ask if the bed is actually a king or a double and I clarify that a double bed really wont work, singles fine but not one double. We rented out an apartment we owned on airbnb and were really careful to give bed measurements. You have a good case for complaint.

However, its very easy to leave a pretty damning review. We stayed in one fabulous Airbnb, modern, edgy design and really unusual furniture. The bed however was positively evil! It was like sleeping on a stone floor, no give in the mattress at all. I have arthritis and was in pain for the three days we stayed. I stated on the review the bed was as firm as a floor so beware.

Elvis1956 misrepresenting isnt a trivial matter. We book Airbnb maybe four or five times a year, staying three or four days and paying up to £800 for a one bed flat. We have a superking at home and through physical problems we need a large bed. We make a point of checking the bed is king size. If we then arrive and its not, then that is deception on their part. They are claiming to have something they dont have. You may be happy to sleep in a four foot six bed with your partner but then you may not be over six feet as we both are. When you rent out to others, you have to be honest with regard to what they are paying for. Hence Premier Inn making the point loudly that all their beds are king size.

Ikea sell UK sized beds - I have a king mattress upstairs from Ikea. It really doesn't matter if it is from Ikea, they stopped selling the euro sizes a while ago.

So he made a mistake , what do you expect for compensation ? £3 per person ? Because compensation is supposed to be for losses . What loss did you suffer ?

Yes exactly

CoQ10 · 19/09/2023 21:01

Raise it with Airbnb directly.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 19/09/2023 21:43

I would definitely mention it on a review so other potential renters are aware.

A decent night's sleep I would imagine .

We had this on a week long holiday, also there was no washer dryer. We wrote a polite email and mentioned reviews and they offered us 1/3 of the cost back as a refund . They were new with few reviews, so needed us on side!

Complain, yanbu.

I don't blame you at all; but what a sad state of affairs when people promise things as a condition of your doing business with them, and then you still have to contact them to make sure that they aren't lying to you.

So he made a mistake , what do you expect for compensation ? £3 per person ? Because compensation is supposed to be for losses . What loss did you suffer ?

Not a mistake - a lie. Considering that 'double' would be the natural default term to use, unless you have a KS bed, it's nothing short of deliberate deception.

What other major 'mistakes' would you be willing to overlook? The description of your property that you give to people, to enable them to decide whether they want to book or not, is meant to be a factual statement, not just what you think they'd like there to be in theory.

As PP said, the loss is for the level of comfort that was promised but lied about - very serious.

comfyshoes2022 · 20/09/2023 01:29

Mention in the review

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 20/09/2023 01:36

Honest reviews are great for warning future customers, but they don't really help you if you were lied to as to what you were actually booking.

Buffs · 20/09/2023 02:30

I would want some compensation, it is less comfortable than you expected.

Bernardo1 · 20/09/2023 09:29

You should certainly not let it lie (excuse pun). The listing must be corrected or king installed, or others will suffer.
Just how vehemently you complain and whether you do so to Airbnb is up to you.

If they get involved, certainly it will be resolved or they will be delisted.

In Malta, we had a bed with broken slats. We complained, nothing done. They even suggested to Airbnb that we broke it. Airbnb were furious with them. Found us a better place and made them refund the rest of our stay so we didn't pay twice.

In Paris the WiFi did not work. We complained to no effect, nothing was done. Notified Airbnb who got us a very substantial refund. Think it was over £51 for a 3 might stay.

Justsaynonow · 23/09/2023 03:36

We stayed 3 days in an Airbnb in Brussels last November. When we arrived the bedding was not there. We messaged and damp sheets were delivered. We hung them around, went out for dinner, and then arrived back to make the bed and then discover that there was no hot water. There were multiple phone numbers posted to call about various issues and we eventually reached a handyman and arranged to let him in to fix it - on the evening of the 2nd night. The host didn't answer our message until the morning of checkout, only asking us to leave a good review. Airbnb was less than helpful. We asked for a 2/3 refund as we had hot water for only 1/3 of our stay, and they said the host wouldn't agree to that, and Airbnb would give less as it was resolved by the end of our stay. We ended up with about 50E refund, wasted time spent messaging airbnb & various host numbers, no showers for 2 days, having to wait in for repair, and the joy of bed bug bites discovered a few days after we left. Truly wish we'd stayed in a hotel - the listing even stated there was a coffee maker (one of my essentials) and there was a half coffee maker (a plunger but no carafe, and no coffee). Worst Airbnb experience ever. Luckily the one in Dijon was absolutely perfect.

My point, after all that, is that AirBnb really couldn't care less and I don't feel the compensation was adequate for the disruption. If you do want some sort of compensation make sure to start the process while you are there, but don't expect much for the wrong size of bed. They didn't care about no hot water. And for short stays I'll be hotelling.

But according to some of the people on this thread, the host probably just made a few (well, a lot of) 'genuine mistakes' - you survived the experience and you're still alive to tell the tale, so it can't have really mattered, can it?

I bet none of these hosts who promise the moon on a stick and then don't even provide a stick don't make many 'mistakes' in happily spending the money they earn through deception.

Coulditreallybe · 23/09/2023 12:08

I only stay in places with super king or king beds. If I had been misled about a bed I’d expect money back. It’s a big deal to some of us. A double is absolutely not ok in my book, so I wouldn’t have chosen to stay there had I known…
