Airbnb bed not king size

ViaRia01 · 18/09/2023 06:06

Currently away in an Airbnb, we checked in last night.

As soon as I got into bed I realised it was a double, not a king size. King size was stated in the listing before we booked. I checked the listing again and it says king size.

AIBU to say something to the hosts and what (if anything) could I expect from them to compensate?

We have a king at home so we are noticing the difference. We can manage perfectly well in a double but I feel shortchanged and misled. There is a good chance we would not have booked this place if it had been listed as a double.

what do you think?

Anyone who thinks you’re being unreasonable has obviously never had to sleep next to someone like my husband who jerks and jumps in his sleep, has whacked me in the face and snores like nothing I’ve ever heard.

I cannot and will not, share a double bed with him. It’s superking or someone is on the sofa.

I’d be extremely annoyed if they had listed the bed size incorrectly as I wouldn’t book somewhere with a double bed.

I think you mean Emperor size?
My friend has one in her guest house and it’s fabulous.

Double 140 x 200 - 4’6”
King 150/160 x 200 - 5’
Superking 180 x 200 - 6’
Emperor 200 x 200 - 6’6”

No, I meant Superduper Kingsize. I just made it up. It's such a ridiculous thread.

Sleeping on the sofa is better than sharing a double? I can't see how that can be.

On the odd occcasion that we were stuck with a double one of us would almost always slept elsewhere, floor, bath ! A king size bed used to be 6 feet and a queen 5 feet but there seems to have been a change, a king is now only 5 feet.

Nobody forced you to open, read and engage with the thread, if you don't care about getting to make your own holiday plans, based on preference or need owing to physical size and/or disability.

If you personally want to email booking.com and say "1 holiday, please; ooh, surprise me", that's up to you. The rest of us will make our own choices, thanks.

UndercoverCop · 18/09/2023 12:49

This would annoy me I'm 5'9 and DH is 6'4 we have a superking at home so even a king-size is a compromise. A double is really uncomfortable for both of us and would impact any overnight stay. We purposefully book to meet our needs so would be disappointed if the listing was inaccurate.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 18/09/2023 12:49

Considering that 'double' would be the natural default for almost everybody to say, it would be very strange indeed for somebody to 'mistakenly' Hmm claim they had a king-size when it is just a double.

It's nothing like, say, stating that there is a 'hoover' there, when it's actually a Shark or a Dyson vacuum, because that is the default name for it for most people.

PercyPigInAWig · 18/09/2023 13:11

I wouldn't book anywhere with a double bed unless there was an additional bed for one of us.
We have a super king at home, which is the width of a standard single each, so a king size is smaller than we are used to but okay for holidays. A double is not okay at all, my DH is the same as @Kazzybingbong
I would expect a king size bed or an extra bed to be brought to the property. I always mention major issues straight away with Airbnb as it's better to give the opportunity to rectify it, this is a major issue for me. If I was staying there alone, I'd mention it but not as a major issue.

Serenity45 · 18/09/2023 13:20

YANBU OP. DH is 6'3" ex rugby player and I'm short but chubby. I'm also going through menopause and he's an insomniac so we have a super king at home (and still use the spare bed a lot!). We specifically check for bed size when we book, with king size as a minimum. We would be really pissed off with a double and would contact the owner immediately. If it was a weekend stay we could probably suck it up, but anything longer than that and there would need to be either another bed available or alternative accommodation.

ViaRia01 · 18/09/2023 13:41

This has turned into quite the debate. here’s my update…

it is an ikea mattress but I go t have a tape measure and I’m not going to go out of my way to get one on holiday.

some have said don’t complain as I’ve said it doesn’t affect us as I e said we’ll be able to make do. I don’t quite agree as, although I will be able to sleep, we did specifically search for a king bed and we factored that into the amount we were willing to pay.

my view on this is quite middle ground so I’m surprised by some of the nasty / “some people…!!!” type of comments. It’s fine though- I’ll just assume you woke up on the wrong side of your double bed.

think that’s all from me. Thanks for all the input 😀

AuntieEsther · 18/09/2023 13:56

Do you have an iPhone? If so you have a tape measure. Search for the measure function and you can see what size it is.

And meanwhile in Ukraine …..

@Boxoftricksanstreats imagine if someone came onto the AIBU thread you started recently and posted something like this. How would you feel? Compared to war all of our lives look insignificant. Even your search for love.

beanii · 18/09/2023 10:24

Glad this is the biggest worry you have.

Mention it to them, may be a genuine mistake - nothing else needed.

Wow.

Can you quote where the OP said this is their biggest worry? I can’t find it.

Lizzieregina · 18/09/2023 15:45

I would definitely complain and it would be a focus of my review. I ONLY book airbnbs with a king size bed and I’d be extremely peeved if there was misrepresentation. If I knew ahead of time I definitely wouldn’t book it.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 18/09/2023 19:12

I'd also wonder what other lies they might have told. If they've realised what manner of amenities and facilities are popular and encourage people to book and then listed them, without actually offering them, why would they just stop with lying about the bed?

That 'five-minute walk from the beach', when even Usain Bolt couldn't do it in that time without a motorbike? The 'plentiful on-street parking', when it's double yellows all the way down for miles?

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 18/09/2023 19:15

If we're suddenly adopting this thread-value-rating system, MN Talk may as well close down now. Even when we do discuss topics that are universally considered of world importance, we're just a load of ordinary people - not the UN or the COBRA committee - so it's not as if we can make any ground-breaking decisions or proclamations between us.

MaryLivingOnDreamsAndCustardCreams · 18/09/2023 19:20

Absolutely @FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper either topics are too trivial 'I couldn't get worked up about that' or too important 'let's see your qualifications in the field'. Might as well all pack up and go home.

anomaly2 · 18/09/2023 19:28

Elvis1956 · 18/09/2023 06:32

Wow, and if they have left a pea under the mattress would you feel it. Just ask them to correct the listing. It's not like there is no running water or anything vital.... people these days.... what you going to do sue them?

Huh? If people falsely advertise then they should be held responsible. Raise your bar in life Pet. I can imagine many people would not have booked if they knew it was a measly double.

anomaly2 · 18/09/2023 19:29

autienotnaughty · 18/09/2023 06:43

I'd just say something in the review. It's not worth a complaint unless you are both over 6ft.

What if they were large. What if one was pregnant and needed space. Or had a back problem and needed space. Point is the place was falsely represented

greengreengrass25 · 18/09/2023 19:31

I would be irritated

I always look for kingsize when booking as oppose to a double

Oblomov23 · 18/09/2023 19:41

This would nark me. False advertising.

autienotnaughty · 18/09/2023 20:09

@anomaly2 if they were tall, pregnant etc and it hindered on their ability to enjoy the trip then yes I would complain but otherwise I'd leave it but warn others

What are you trying to convey with that remark? That you're somehow better than the OP ?

Are we only allowed to be annoyed by events of worldwide importance? Or things you think are worthy? It's perfectly understandable to be irked by paying for one thing and getting something you consider inferior.

LakesDad · 19/09/2023 19:32

This is more common than you might think and it is quite an inconvenience if you are used to sleeping in a larger bed.

Even big chains like Premier Inn are guilty of promising king-size beds but only actually having double in some of their 'premium' premier plus style rooms....see this review...Premier Plus Rooms

Premier Plus room review - double bed + air-con limited to 19℃!

We take a two night stay in a city centre Premier Plus room and have the most uncomfortable stay ever in a Premier Inn - what on earth are Premier Inn thinking!

martinisforeveryone · 19/09/2023 19:38

I really fail to understand all the snippy princess and the pea, suck it up remarks.
It doesn't take special kind of genius to realise there are worse problems in the world, no one needs a TED talk or reminder of that: this is just a bog average message board where the users provide the content. The content comes in all shapes, sizes and degrees of angst from nail colours to world disasters. OP hasn't pretended it's earth shattering, but it is akin to paying for whatever and being short changed. If the scenario was 'I bought two 8oz steaks from big name supermarket but when I got them home I found they were only 6oz' would she have got replies saying that people are starving in other parts of the world, so she shouldn't complain?

Personally we have a SK sized bed at home and although I don't expect everywhere in hospitality to offer that, I wouldn't select anywhere with less than a king size. If I'd specifically booked on that basis and not received it, I'd be put out too. Goes without saying that if I was in a bombed out cellar, thankful for my life, then a folded blanket would be very welcome, but that's not we're discussing on this particular thread.
