Airbnb bed not king size

ViaRia01 · 18/09/2023 06:06

Currently away in an Airbnb, we checked in last night.

As soon as I got into bed I realised it was a double, not a king size. King size was stated in the listing before we booked. I checked the listing again and it says king size.

AIBU to say something to the hosts and what (if anything) could I expect from them to compensate?

We have a king at home so we are noticing the difference. We can manage perfectly well in a double but I feel shortchanged and misled. There is a good chance we would not have booked this place if it had been listed as a double.

what do you think?

Def complain and ask for compensation. I can barely sleep in a king def not sharing a double, they are 1ft wider than a single so not really designed for 2 adults of today's height etc.

TheChosenTwo · 18/09/2023 07:03

I’d be pissed off, we have a king at home and where possible I always look to book the same elsewhere. I hate sharing a small bed with dh, we are both big people and like a big bed so we don’t have to touch at all in the night.
Let them know that they’ve falsely advertised for sure.

Boomboom22 · 18/09/2023 07:04

So many posters ok with being lied to to get you to book. Most people who look for a king size need it so have rejected better air bnb for this one which may be worse in other ways. The seller is clearly deliberately lying to get business and false advertising should be compensated.

ViaRia01 · 18/09/2023 07:05

It’s interesting there are very mixed responses here. Thank you all for the replies. Definitely helped to get some perspective on my own response.

I’m a bit cynical and my first assumption is that they MUST know they’ve misrepresented it in the listing and just hope that they get away with it.

I think as it is unlikely to affect us too much (we’re not tall and only a little bit chunky) I’m not going to complain for write a review. I will mention it though, perhaps after check out in the hope that other guests won’t be caught out in future.

It certainly won’t ruin our stay here. It’s beautiful.

You should mention it in your review! Drop a star from 5 to 4 and explain it wasn't as described.

ViaRia01 · 18/09/2023 07:11

@AuntieEsther hmmm perhaps. I guess sometimes reviews or asking for money back etc seems petty but sometimes it’s the best way towards an actual improvement / fix.

I’ll sleep on it (see what I did there???)

1ft 6 inches different actually.
In the UK, a single is 3ft. A double is 4ft 6". A king is 5ft, so only 6 inches wider than a double (but also longer) and a super king is 6ft (effectively 2 singles).

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 18/09/2023 07:14

My first thought was I wonder if it was a king from IKEA? Which is smaller than a normal U.K. king

I hate sleeping in a double so you have my sympathy!

CoreopsisEverywhere · 18/09/2023 07:14

I’d definitely mention it. One of my criteria for booking is king or super king so I would be really pissed off (and tired and grumpy!).

Airbnb reviews are essential. You're just reviewing whether the listing was accurate and that helps future guests. It's not fair not to mention issues with a listing IMO! And I say this as a long term airbnb host (in my own home)
If it was something easily fixable I would always rather the guest mentioned it straight away so I could fix it rather than wait til they leave and give a poor review but if there is something genuinely incorrect against the listing then it's absolutely fair to mention it in the review. Also mention it to the hosts directly.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 18/09/2023 07:15

Reasonable to mention it to the hosts and also to write it in the review. If the place was more expensive than comparable places with double beds then a discount might be reasonable but I don’t think ‘compensation’ is a given in this kind of scenario.

WholeWorldsPivot · 18/09/2023 07:18

I also thought about IKEA beds like a PP. I worked there for five years and still never understood their bed sizes! (probably says more about me than about them though... 😁) Look for a label on the mattress @ViaRia01 - might solve the mystery at least?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 18/09/2023 07:19

Damn right I would complain, I'm really sick of things like this with Air BNB. It doesn't matter WHY you need a bigger bed,you booked a place that stayed it has a king-size and it doesn't.

ViaRia01 · 18/09/2023 07:22

@Bobsledgirl
Not really sure what I expect them to do. I agree with some PP that it doesn’t seem a big enough issue to demand money back. But then, if we were tall and/ very overweight, we may really struggle to get comfortable.

@Elvis1956
No I don’t think I’d feel a pea under the mattress…
I think we booked this place primarily to sleep in while we’re away so it is important that the bed is comfortable and as described.

Write to your MP.

dudsville · 18/09/2023 07:24

Clearly to done this wouldn't matter at all and they really can't fathom how it would matter to others. Perhaps your bnb owner is also in this category. I'm like you OP, and wouldn't be able to sleep.

Jantlet · 18/09/2023 07:24

I always look for king size when booking, so this would really piss me off as it would impact on our sleep. It is blatant misrepresentation and the owners know that, they are just trying it on.

I would definitely complain and expect some compensation.

Bleuuuughhh · 18/09/2023 06:40

There seems to be a lot of derision about this issue. My husband is 6”5 and I had four cracked ribs. We booked an Airbnb looking for king size and exactly the same thing happened. It meant that we took it in turns to sleep on the floor. Yes, we should have complained but we were too pussy willow…

Edited

I'm with you on this. My husband is tall - I most definitely am not, but a) he hogs more than his fair share of the bed and b) neither of us are great sleepers. We definitely feel uncomfortable in a double and don't sleep particularly well, so it's quite a key point we look for when booking accommodation. I would be annoyed (and indeed had this in a hotel once - being a hotel they had another room they could move us to which did have a kingsize).

YepYepYepYep · 18/09/2023 07:27

I'd definitely complain. I don't like sleeping in a double with my husband.

LaLoose · 18/09/2023 07:30

There is a possibility that it's a genuine mistake. For instance, they could have put a new bed in the Air BNB recently and forgot to update the listing. So, for that reason, I would mention it to the owners and wait to hear their answer rather than going directly for the bad-review course of action.

Needanewnamebeingwatched · 18/09/2023 07:31

I would complain now and say the bed isn't the correct size. I also go for a king-size and it would impact our stay.

Kaibashira · 18/09/2023 07:31

An AirBnB should be run like a business. It's not sofa surfing at a mate's house.

If you booked a premium room in a hotel, because the bed was king sized, and then were allocated a standard size with a double, what would you do? Suck it up or go straight to reception and ask to change rooms.

Just because the AirBnB is (sometimes) the host's home, that doesn't mean you have to meekly accept misrepresentation.

Tell the host today, ask them what they think is fair in terms of recompense.
Send a screenshot of the listing and the measurements of the bed.
Write it in your review.

skilpadde · 18/09/2023 07:31

European king size, which used to be available in Ikea, is bigger than UK king size (5' 3" wide rather than 5' wide), so that wouldn't explain the misrepresentation.

I sleep in a super king, and would be really gutted to have been tricked into using a double.

OneMoreStepAlongTheRoadIGo · 18/09/2023 07:31

I love the lack of imagination of some posters on these type of threads. It wouldn't possibly bother them so can't think how it would bother others!

I am large with some mobility problems. We don't touch when actually sleeping or it affects sleep. I have some sleep issues too.

We've been booking a holiday and umed and ahead about Airbnb but in the e d decided we wouldn't. I hadn't even thought about bed size but it was more than its our 1 holiday a year and if its not right or not clean or cant get keys etc it would ruin it.

It would certainly ruin it if we couldn't sleep/bed was too small!!!

We've booked a chain aparthotel instead. Not as indivual or personal but good reviews and spotlessly clean. And now I'm relieved it will have the bed size it says!!

If you holiday all the time, and don't have sleep issues then I can imagine 1 slightly not up to par trip not mattering.

If you need the bed to be what it says to sleep (sleep issues/tall DH/larger body etc) then not getting proper sleep on your holiday is understandably upsetting!

PinkRoses1245 · 18/09/2023 07:31

Definitely mention it as a discrepancy in the listing
