Airbnb bed not king size

ViaRia01 · 18/09/2023 06:06

Currently away in an Airbnb, we checked in last night.

As soon as I got into bed I realised it was a double, not a king size. King size was stated in the listing before we booked. I checked the listing again and it says king size.

AIBU to say something to the hosts and what (if anything) could I expect from them to compensate?

We have a king at home so we are noticing the difference. We can manage perfectly well in a double but I feel shortchanged and misled. There is a good chance we would not have booked this place if it had been listed as a double.

what do you think?

I know people keep saying that it might be an IKEA king size, but IKEA beds are actually bigger than UK ones as they are based on European sizes so that wouldn't be an issue.

cushioncovers · 18/09/2023 08:16

Yep complain op. It needs changing on the description as well. I have a double bed to myself I would hate to share one, I'm menopausal with restless legs and hot flushes, I need space to sprawl. It would piss me off if I got somewhere that I had booked with a bigger bed in mind and it was only a double. I'm fed up with accommodation having shitty cheap beds.

BIossomtoes · 18/09/2023 08:17

Irritating. We don’t sleep well in a double. It’s only six inches difference but it feels like far more than that.

Shaw55 · 18/09/2023 08:17

My DH rolling out of the double in our holiday let ( we have a king size at home), was one of many highlights of the trip. 😉

His little face as he popped up from the floor. Hysterical ( but I appreciate only funny because he wasn't hurt - well except for his pride ) 😂😂😂

Pottedpalm · 18/09/2023 08:18

I don’t think any of my friends or family have double beds. I’m always amused when TV dramas show couples in big, beautiful houses but them cramped in a double bed; very unrealistic. Don’t even Travelodge and Premier Inn market themselves as having large beds?

givemeasunnyday · 18/09/2023 08:18

Just let them know so they can alter their listing. No, you shouldn't expect compensation 😦

Why not?

Birch101 · 18/09/2023 08:21

Because we co sleep when away we can only use a UK king size. It is one of my main criteria So I would be very annoyed and would ask for a refund.

user1492757084 · 18/09/2023 08:21

For information purposes, are these the sizes of King and Super King where your accomodation is situated?

Double - 140 cm x 188 cm
Queen - 150 cm x 203 cm
Single - 92 cm x 188 cm
King single - 103 cm x 203 cm
King - 183 cm x 203 cm
Super King - 203 cm x 203 cm

SausageAndEggSandwich · 18/09/2023 08:23

I think some people are being quite mean.

I would be really disappointed to find a double rather than a king, and it would massively spoil my stay

I don't book anywhere that says double. I have a SK at home & a king is the smallest I will book.

It's a lie - and I would want a refund tbh, never mind just leaving a review or "mentioning" to the host

I find this all the time, same thing happened to us at the weekend. It seems par for the course tbh when renting places, one of us usually ends up on the sofa. It is v annoying but I've never mentioned it in a review, maybe I will from now on

Please do. Increasingly, I find I cannot trust the reviews on airbnb as people give glowing reviews with nothing negative highlighted. Are people afraid of some sort of retaliatory bad feedback from the host?

Diamondsareforeverandever · 18/09/2023 08:31

I think best thing to do would be to send an email and say you enjoyed your stay etc but are they aware their listing says the bed is king size and actually it's a double.

Oh shut up

Funngames1 · 18/09/2023 08:35

This would really bother me. I've questioned bed sizes before. For example when somewhere lists 'a large double' - it's always a regular sized double!

TripAdviser · 18/09/2023 08:37

My DH is 6ft 5 we have a super king at home and always check the bed sizes wherever we stay. This happened to us OP and I feel your pain - bed was a double and had a fucking foot board and well just to make it really uncomfortable. To all the people saying what's the problem - how about you have a little think about what it might be like to be different to you.

HowcanIhelp123 · 18/09/2023 08:37

I'd definitely mention it and make sure you leave a review specifying it isn't king so others know.

My DH and I have a super king and we can def tell if a bed is smaller. We stayed in a double once, him 6ft 3, me 5ft 8 and quite pregnant, it was not conducive to sleep!

I suppose any thread you've started has been about Ukraine? No thought not

PickledPurplePickle · 18/09/2023 08:40

We have a super king and book a minimum of a king when we go away

i would be asking the owner to update the listing and put it in my review to warn others

CCTVcity · 18/09/2023 08:40

We have a super. I didn’t look at this when we stayed away and have to admit it was horrendous sleeping in a double. It’s on my must list for next time so if you specifically searched for it I would complain.

ZadocPDederick · 18/09/2023 08:43

I don't book holiday cottage and hotels unless they offer king size beds, so like you I would be pissed off about this . In warm weather in particular I do want a reasonable distance between me and DH when we're trying to sleep, so this would have spoilt my holiday. They should be offering compensation.

ViaRia01 · 18/09/2023 08:44

@Boxoftricksanstreats No, I’m staying in Devon…

You need a tape measure so you can take a photo of the actual size.

And some photos of you both lying on the bed, next to the tape measure, looking sad so the owner can see the impact of their lie.
Infact, visit a local wallpaper shop and buy a roll of lining paper and some masking tape. Make a large rectangle the size of a king size bed and place it on the floor under the ned. Then take the photos of you both lying on the double bed looking miserable. The owner will really see the significance of their deception then.
Really you should get a complete refund plus significant compensation.

Bluevelvetsofa · 18/09/2023 08:48

We book places that state they have king size beds, so I’d be fed up if it wasn’t. We had the same issue this year, but there was another single bed in another room, so we used that. There were many other issues, so we did get some money back. The bed was very soft and we both felt every small movement.

I’d certainly mention it. It does have an impact on your stay.
