Airbnb bed not king size

ViaRia01 · 18/09/2023 06:06

Currently away in an Airbnb, we checked in last night.

As soon as I got into bed I realised it was a double, not a king size. King size was stated in the listing before we booked. I checked the listing again and it says king size.

AIBU to say something to the hosts and what (if anything) could I expect from them to compensate?

We have a king at home so we are noticing the difference. We can manage perfectly well in a double but I feel shortchanged and misled. There is a good chance we would not have booked this place if it had been listed as a double.

what do you think?

And to the people who are brushing it off as 'only a few inches', have you ever been expecting a proper single bed when staying somewhere and discovered that it's one of those 2'6" ones? It makes a huge difference.

BrawnWild · 18/09/2023 09:58

Would you be happy to move?

If so perhaps find an alternative accommodation and say that as the bed is the wrong size you want to cancel and refund for the remainder of the stay as it is unsuitable for you.

Money off doesnt make it comfortable.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 18/09/2023 10:03

We would go to the desk and point out a king was reserved and to transfer you to a room with a king. Hopefully it is able comply.

The problem is that you will really struggle to find somewhere else at such short notice. Who wants to spend the first day of their holiday searching for accommodation, when they already dealt with that months ago?

They know that they have you over a barrel, and you will be too late to find elsewhere by the time you discover their lie.

SweetBirdsong · 18/09/2023 10:08

Really? Hmm

VerityRoss · 18/09/2023 10:10

Check the bedding if there is a label and measure the bed. We have a king size and every time we stayed at my parents I complained about their tiny double bed. Until my mum marched me up to the room with a tape measure and we measured the bed to
find it was indeed a king size. For some unknown reason we feel so squished in it whereas our bed at home feels spacious. Sorry mum, you were right all along!

Measure and check before you make an arse out of yourself.

Silvers11 · 18/09/2023 10:16

@ViaRia01

If that happened to us it WOULD ruin our Holiday, so please mention it in your review. Please ignore the posters who are brushing it off as it might be ok for them, but they clearly don't understand that some people could have major problems if they sleep badly and are constantly tired as a result

I have 2 sleep disorders and in fact we have a super-king (6 foot wide) at home, made with 2 x 3 foot mattresses which can be linked or unlinked. When we go away I have to be sure that either there is a 6 foot wide, or full size twin beds. As a previous poster said, references to double/king/super-king vary depending what part of the world you come from

So please, mention it. If it hasn't impacted you too much, you don't need to turn it into a huge complaint, but if it's noted in your review then it could be very helpful to others looking to stay somewhere

Size matters [snigger]

Are you sure you don't have a 6 foot wide, Super-king bed at home @VerityRoss? Make sure you measure the mattress only, too, as some bed frames are bigger than the mattress and it's the mattress size that counts....

beanii · 18/09/2023 10:24

Glad this is the biggest worry you have.

Mention it to them, may be a genuine mistake - nothing else needed.

Wow.

beanii · 18/09/2023 10:26

They've clearly said they can manage - unless they're obese this sounds very petty.

Northernladdette · 18/09/2023 10:28

I’d mention it in order they get their listing right. No other reason …….

Sunandsea26 · 18/09/2023 10:36

I would deffo say something as you booked it based on that! It’s a very important part of a stay. People who think it isn’t an issue - more fool them and lucky them being able to sleep in any situation. A lot of people can’t

Rosejasmine · 18/09/2023 10:37

I would message the owner through Airbnb and ask about the bed size. They will know the size of the bed .
just a thought, does the bed have a fitted sheet? The size will be on the label.
There are two different king bed sizes - yours at home might be a super king?
Standard double beds look tiny and are obvious to the eye when you are used to a king size bed.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 18/09/2023 10:37

It certainly does Grin

LuluBlakey1 · 18/09/2023 09:11

And you missed out :

Superduper King- 233 cm x210cm

They are new and just fabulous if you have the room size of course.

I think you mean Emperor size?
My friend has one in her guest house and it’s fabulous.

Double 140 x 200 - 4’6”
King 150/160 x 200 - 5’
Superking 180 x 200 - 6’
Emperor 200 x 200 - 6’6”

Sunandsea26 · 18/09/2023 10:39

@beanii so rude and short sighted. It really impacts some peoples sleep and if you are paying a lot for an air bnb why shouldnt it have what it says it has?! Some people can’t just afford to go away whenever they want.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 18/09/2023 10:44

Wow.

You must be the world's biggest doormat, if whenever somebody tries to lie to you, trick you, short-change you or otherwise fails to deliver what you've paid for, you roll over and say "Well, at least it's not a zombie apocalypse!"

It is NOT a genuine mistake. If you have a business, in which beds are a very integral part of what people pay you for, and you thus have to tell potential customers in advance what is on offer, you either already know what size the beds are (in which case, what you say will be accurate) or you measure/check them before you publish your listing.

Freneg98 · 18/09/2023 10:45

I agree it's an issue. Our youngest regularly comes into bed with us in the middle of the night and I also rule out holiday rentals based on bed sizes.
Definitely mention it and tell them how it affected your stay, hopefully they will understand that it does not help them or their customers if they advertise the wrong size.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 18/09/2023 10:48

They've clearly said they can manage - unless they're obese this sounds very petty.

Holidays are about having a wonderful time, not 'managing'. If you'd booked and paid for a posh banquet and they brought you a cheese sandwich, you would 'manage' in that you wouldn't go hungry. I doubt you'd be happy with that, though.

I’d mention it in order they get their listing right. No other reason

Imagine how pathetic/useless/shady you must be in business if you're relying on your occasional customers to tell you the absolute basic specifics of YOUR business.

TenderDandelions · 18/09/2023 10:57

I've discounted listings before that say they're king size and the photos don't look like it. You can normally tell by how much room is either side of the pillows (though I know you can get bigger pillows for bigger beds).

We have a super king at home, and prefer the same when we're away, or a king size at the absolute least. I often sleep in a regular double on my own - there's no way either DH or I would get a decent night's sleep in a double.

I would definitely have to contact the owner and also mention it on the review.

Purplecatshopaholic · 18/09/2023 11:02

I would certainly email the owners and complain. I would also put it in the review I wrote. Job done. I would not expect money off necessarily but I do think they are CFs and I would want to warn others as there are plenty of people who need/want a KS bed so have booked accordingly.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 18/09/2023 11:13

It's a bit difficult, as it seems to be the British 'thing to do' to not complain and feel mean for pointing out negative things in reviews. However, if nobody ever likes to mention the bad things, that means that everybody else who books afterwards suffers (depending on what or isn't an issue for them).

We just had to leave a review about a place which was very nice - all beds (including the KS) were very comfy indeed! - except the sofa was hugely uncomfortable and very small. We clearly mentioned all of the good aspects, but we didn't hold back on describing the sofa truthfully.

If we had known in advance, that sofa would have been a deal-breaker and we wouldn't have booked there, although everything else was lovely/fine. Surely, this is exactly what the purpose of reviews is?!

Hollyppp · 18/09/2023 11:19

I would absolutely be pissed off and I would be saying something.

we would not be booking a place with a double so to find out we had been lied to…

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 18/09/2023 11:23

I'd email the hosts now. No need to be confrontational about it, but just point out that you booked the property with the King size bed and that you are disappointed it seem to be a double. See what they suggest in their reply.

I agree. My best friend has an airbnb and anything less than 5 is seen as a bit of a fail. She would rather sort problems out than have a 4 review. Clearly no chance of changing the bed here, but correcting the listing and maybe offering a discount to some extent would be fair.
