Airbnb bed not king size

ViaRia01 · 18/09/2023 06:06

Currently away in an Airbnb, we checked in last night.

As soon as I got into bed I realised it was a double, not a king size. King size was stated in the listing before we booked. I checked the listing again and it says king size.

AIBU to say something to the hosts and what (if anything) could I expect from them to compensate?

We have a king at home so we are noticing the difference. We can manage perfectly well in a double but I feel shortchanged and misled. There is a good chance we would not have booked this place if it had been listed as a double.

what do you think?

Remember you owe these people nothing so make sure you let them know you are unhappy now and include in your review. People are making a lot of money of Airbnb and getting away with murder in terms of lying in listings and charging ridiculous fees.

countrygirl99 · 18/09/2023 08:51

We always look for at least a king as although we can fit a double my DH generates a lot if heat and it's like trying to sleep snuggled up to a hot radiator. I'm a very restless sleeperand move around a lot in my sleep. So between us neither sleep well in a standard double, we need a bit of space.

And meanwhile in Ukraine …..

Oh look someone trying to be clever.

noctu · 18/09/2023 08:57

YWNBU to raise this to the hosts. We have a superking bed at home and sleeping in doubles when away etc is miserable when you're used to more space.

It’s interesting there are very mixed responses here. Thank you all for the replies. Definitely helped to get some perspective on my own response.

I’m a bit cynical and my first assumption is that they MUST know they’ve misrepresented it in the listing and just hope that they get away with it.

I think as it is unlikely to affect us too much (we’re not tall and only a little bit chunky) I’m not going to complain for write a review. I will mention it though, perhaps after check out in the hope that other guests won’t be caught out in future.

It certainly won’t ruin our stay here. It’s beautiful.

Don’t wait until after checkout as they can say well it obviously didn’t bother you too much. Do it now, and get compensation. It’s not ‘there’s not enough coffee in the jar’, it’s blatant misrepresentation. People choose bed size for a reason. Whether you are 5’ 1” or 6’ 1” is neither here nor there as you specifically chose king size. What if you were 6’ 6”? Do it now, and measure like pp’s have suggested. Then google to see what that corresponds to both in UK sizes and IKEA sizes.

For information purposes, are these the sizes of King and Super King where your accomodation is situated?

Double - 140 cm x 188 cm
Queen - 150 cm x 203 cm
Single - 92 cm x 188 cm
King single - 103 cm x 203 cm
King - 183 cm x 203 cm
Super King - 203 cm x 203 cm

Are these not American sizes? In the uk a queen is smaller than a double

MuffinCoffee · 18/09/2023 09:10

I would complain. It's what was advertised and as a customer your requirement wasn't met. Whether you slept or not is irrelevant. A good host would probably apologise. Not sure if they would refund as a good will gesture. I'd also add a review based on the response and exchange.

And you missed out :

Superduper King- 233 cm x210cm

They are new and just fabulous if you have the room size of course.

They are not correct
A king is 150cm wide
A double is 135 cm wide

UK Bed / Mattress Size Dimensions (Imperial) Dimensions (Metric)
Super King Size 6'0" x 6'6" 180 x 200cm
King Size 5'0" x 6'6" 150 x 200cm
Double 4'6" x 6'3" 135 x 190cm
Queen 4'0" x 6'3" 120 x 190cm
Single 3'0" x 6'3" 90 x 190cm
Small Single 2'6" x 6'3" 75 x 190cm

diddl · 18/09/2023 09:23

We have a Super King which gives us a single mattress size each.

I think a double is the same as having a cot width mattress each.

I think that you should say something.

They probably won't want/expect to compensate for it.

I'd be happy with wine/chocs if they decided to.

Ideally they'd change the bed to the listed size but I think that's doubtful!

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 18/09/2023 09:28

So many posters ok with being lied to to get you to book. Most people who look for a king size need it so have rejected better air bnb for this one which may be worse in other ways. The seller is clearly deliberately lying to get business and false advertising should be compensated.

It's amazing, isn't it? I think some people on here are just doing the bed-equivalent of competitive undereating.

Even if you are travelling on your own and you are very slim and only 4ft tall, if you prefer a KS bed and book and pay for a place based on their claiming to have one, that it what you should get.

It's irrelevant as to how much you 'need' one or not. Most people don't 'need' to be at the Air BnB at all, if you want to argue like that; they could just stay at home and not go on holiday at all, or otherwise shuffle up under a hedge in a farmer's field and eat straw and stop complaining about it.

It IS deliberately false advertising, designed to make money under false pretences. Fine if you only offer a double bed, but you need to state this so that people who require a bigger bed will instantly strike you off their list of potentials.

If you don't even know what size your beds are - when running an Air BnB - and can't even bother to measure them, you shouldn't be in the business - any more than Greg Davies should be a jockey. It's not a 'mistake' - it's an outright deliberate lie.

Cinateel · 18/09/2023 09:30

This is why I choose to stay in Premier Inns! You get what you pay for! We have a Super King, and definitely wouldn't manage in a double.

ClairDeLaLune · 18/09/2023 09:33

That would really annoy me OP. We have a super king at home, would hate to have to squeeze into a double on holiday. I wouldn’t book one if I knew. It’s misrepresentation so they need to correct it. Definitely worth putting in a complaint. And reflecting in your review.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 18/09/2023 09:34

Cheerfulcharlie · 18/09/2023 06:52

I think it’s quite a big deal. When I’m looking at airbnbs I avoid booking one without at least a king sized as we can’t get a good night’s sleep in a double and poor sleep really impacts a holiday!
You should complain and mention it in the review so others are aware.

Exactly. The owners have probably done it deliberately for this very reason. You need to get a reduction at the very least.

CharlotteBog · 18/09/2023 09:36

When I have an AirBnB issue, I always raise it with the host as soon as possible. You need to give them the opportunity to fix things or to explain.

If they don't fix it then you can indicate this when you review. The review allows you to give a star rating for different categories (communication, cleanliness, did it meet expectations etc). If they do fix it then you don't need to give them a public negative review, but in the section where you can write to the host privately you can explain your disappointment (or whatever) there.

DrMarshaFieldstone · 18/09/2023 09:37

This is the new 'massive salad', isn't it? "Oh, I am perfectly happy to curl up in an acorn cup as I am so teeny-tiny."

YANBU OP. DH and I are both over 6' and a king-size bed is a priority on the rare occasions that we go away. Contact the hosts and draw their attention to the issue. It could be a genuine error. They may offer you a 5-10% refund as a goodwill gesture.

BananaHammock23 · 18/09/2023 09:37

I'm with you OP. I'd be really cross. We bed share with a toddler and would only book an Airbnb or hotel with a king size + bed. If I turned up to a double, it would make us more uncomfortable than we are at home and that's not the point of a holiday! I'm not sure whether they would compensate you, but I'd certainly write it in the public review.

CharlotteBog · 18/09/2023 09:37

Have you talked to the host yet OP?

Movinghouseatlast · 18/09/2023 09:40

You are right not to ask for compensation if it isn't actually impacting on you. However, I would tell the host. They might not be doing it on purpose, it could be a mistake.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 18/09/2023 09:40

It's disingenuous giving the different measurements and saying that it's 'only X amount fewer inches'. This is why we have measurements in the first place: so that we can produce and communicate appropriate sizes of items.

If you look at the differences in inches between large sizes and small sizes of clothes, or shoes, they will only differ by 'a few' inches. Most people seem to care about dressing comfortably and wouldn't cheerily accept a top that made them look like Dafydd from Little Britain - even though it does (just about) fit.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 18/09/2023 09:42

This would bother me hugely, I wouldn't get a good nights sleep. I'm 5'10" and DH is 6'5" and proportionate in weight. Both of us would be struggling to be comfortable.

TerfTalking · 18/09/2023 09:44

I don't think it is acceptable. If you are absolutely sure it is a UK double, yes I would measure and also check the washing instructions on the duvet cover (mine have the size) and then I would contact the owner. As soon as possible.

I think they absolutely need to change the listing and it would be nice if they dropped you some wine or biscuits over by way of an apology and offered a reduction for your inconvenience and discomfort.

Boopydoo · 18/09/2023 09:44

As a host myself, and someone who also uses airbnb quite a lot, I'd message the host and make it clear I'd booked the home due to it being listed as having a king-sized bed, now we have checked in I feel a little bit confused as to why the bed is actually a double?

I'd wait and see what their response is, they are either going to care they made a mistake and try and offer a solution, or they are going to fob you off.

Once you know their response to your perfectly reasonable question, you will then know how they deserve to be reviewed.

DragonFly98 · 18/09/2023 09:49

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 18/09/2023 07:14

My first thought was I wonder if it was a king from IKEA? Which is smaller than a normal U.K. king

I hate sleeping in a double so you have my sympathy!

ikea bed have been standard size for years.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 18/09/2023 09:50

When I have an AirBnB issue, I always raise it with the host as soon as possible. You need to give them the opportunity to fix things or to explain.

Yes, that's wise - although I highly doubt they're going to turn up straightaway in a van and haul a proper KS bed in.

They might not be doing it on purpose, it could be a mistake.

Isn't it interesting how seldom hosts seem to make the opposite mistake: listing it as a double when it's actually a KS? It's 100% not a mistake - it's either an outright lie, a complete lazy disregard for your customers or both. The first 'B' in AirBnB stands for bed - it's not an unimportant little extra.

Why don't they just go ahead and claim that it's in York when it's actually in Rotherham; or it's a ground-floor accessible flat when it's actually on the third floor with no lift? All just 'innocent mistakes', of course...
