In a supermarket and heard a middle aged woman say 'OH! You've got back off your holibobs then!?'

What is wrong with saying 'holiday'? I actually cringed when I heard it.

Feel free to add your own...

@yettio

https://www.cambridge.org/elt/blog/2020/02/24/no-such-thing-as-standard-english/

You may find this enlightening. It's from Cambridge English and is a quick article and written for those first exploring linguistics and English.

The book referenced is by David Crystal, arguably our greatest living linguist. He has several more papers/books on how there is no one standard English.

I hate the use of cute when used by young women referring to elderly people. Makes me shudder and find it very disrespectful.

Phos · 22/09/2023 09:14

I can’t stand people saying “passed” - there’s nothing wrong with “died. If anyone talks about me passing once I’m dead I will come back and haunt them. I might even steal the chains from their grandfather clock.

WildFlowerBees · 22/09/2023 18:10

When someone asks a question followed by 'go' or 'discuss' I just want to reply, fuck off.

TorqueWrench · 22/09/2023 21:53

I can't stand office-isms. Reaching out, bandwidth, blue sky thinking, etc.

TorqueWrench · 22/09/2023 21:54

I mean, why would you 'reach out' to Dave rather than just speak to him. Confused

Ladyof2022 · 23/09/2023 00:57

I hate it when people refer to being pregnant as having a baby in your tummy. The only way a baby is going to be in your tummy is if you've eaten it.

I went to the funeral of my Dad’s cousin’s wife - and she had left strict instructions that everyone was to simply say she’d died at her funeral. No ‘passing’ nonsense in any of the eulogies. No-one was to wear dark colours, either. It was a really enjoyable funeral, if that’s possible.

RantyAnty · 23/09/2023 05:32

Hate the word punter

Good on her!

Socials, as in referring to social media accounts is another one that's creeping in.

TheChippendenSpook · 23/09/2023 11:48

Screens is another one. 'He spends too much time on screens. I hate it.

SofiaSoFar · 23/09/2023 13:50

What about the addition of a possessive to food, drinks, pretty much anything?

"I love MY wine..."

"He loves HIS food..."

etc.

MrsHughesPinny · 02/10/2023 18:07

@SofiaSoFar Omg, I agree! I can’t stand this.

Or even worse, they say stomach! When the above certainly applies too!

@marshmallowfinder @Ladyof2022
I've always taken tummy to mean abdomen. I mean when you say you've a tummyache it's abdominal pain you're talking about - it could be intestinal rather than in the actual stomach.
Belly is used in the same way and actually so is stomach sometimes too. One of the dictionary definitions of stomach is the soft part of your body below your chest.

explainthistomeplease · 04/10/2023 14:32

Partner. I hate it. It's often used when fiancé or boyfriend/girlfriend will do. I realise there are some situations where it's the right thing.. when you're living as a married couple might be, in which case it's fine. But it's bandied around in all kinds of half-cocked situations.
Especially dislike 'myself and my partner' or 'my partner and myself'.

I'll likely get flamed for this one!

blobby10 · 04/10/2023 15:20

@explainthistomeplease I agree with you however, it became the most suitable way of describing my boyfriend a few years ago. We were in our 50s so boyfriend sounded ridiculous although 'girlfriend' seemed OK. We weren't married, engaged or living together so couldn't think what else to use.

explainthistomeplease · 04/10/2023 15:42

I'll allow yours @blobby10 ! But it sounds like we agree it's overused.

Give me partner over fiancé any day of the week!

I didn’t refer to DH as my fiancé (Ah’m getting married!!) once in the entire time we were engaged.

that!

I never comment when other people use it for their own bereavement, but I want to scream when someone is talking about MY baby "born sleeping". My baby is not born sleeping, my baby died. So fuck off with the twee and precious nonsense.

Oh god that's foot in mouth territory, sorry for your loss suffices no need to say much more.
