Hatred of certain words/phrases

In a supermarket and heard a middle aged woman say 'OH! You've got back off your holibobs then!?'

What is wrong with saying 'holiday'? I actually cringed when I heard it.

Feel free to add your own...

I really hate the word “mamma” when applied to mothers. Particularly when coupled with the word “breastfeeding”.

Smug, twee and incredibly judgemental.

explainthistomeplease · 18/09/2023 12:30

M1 motorway.
Everyone knows the M1 is a motorway. Unnecessary word.

menopausalmare · 18/09/2023 16:47

'Smashed it'.
For doing mundane things in an average way.

ToWhitToWhoo · 18/09/2023 19:17

Chrimbo.

Thinking outside the box (so overused that it's in a box by now!)

Managerial jargon; e.g. 'delivering' anything that doesn't literally arrive at your door.

'My journey' for anything that doesn't literally involve travel.

Lived experience (surely all experience is lived?)

Pre-loved (what's wrong with 'second-hand'?)

Woke as an insult, and especially derivations of it ('wokesters', 'wokerati').

'Resilience' when used to imply that it's a moral virtue.

'Happy birthday' if said to me (I am totally birthday-phobic).

Poorly to mean ill. I know it’s irrational but I cannot stand it and I don’t really know why.

I don't mind poorly, but I dislike the expression 'She's a bit fluey'. People are not fluey; they have the flu, and if they truly do, there's usually no 'a bit' about it!

InsomniacA · 18/09/2023 19:41

'Was sat' and 'was stood'.

'I was sat on the bus when I realised I didn't have my bag'.
'I was stood in the queue'.

Nobody is sitting you down, and nobody is leading you like a horse and causing you to stand in these cases.

This automatically makes a person seem less educated, a person who isn't good with words and doesn't read or follow the news in any way.

And it is becoming more prevalent.

I think 'scorchio' is referencing a comedy sketch from The Fast Show @Anni1234

Oh ok!

TorqueWrench · 18/09/2023 19:56

I hate the word cottage.

Reported for homophobia. 😂

SerenChocolateMuncher · 18/09/2023 20:07

"To die for". Seriously, nothing on earth is that good and it doesn't even make sense.

Fur babies.
Hubby or hubster.
Cheeky (insert name of food or drink).

Iloveanicegarden · 18/09/2023 20:12

I couldn't get through my dr's appointment without ref to one one these words - so much better than minge

Poppyseed14 · 18/09/2023 20:17

The girls. As in boobs, tits, knockers. Call them what you will but not the fucking girls. Gives me the right rage. I see it all the time on Boob or Bust.

Ickle. I hate this word as well. Thankfully on Boob or Bust there aren't many ickle girls, there are mostly great big massive knockers so the two don't often collide.

morethanspice · 18/09/2023 06:48

I hate the expression “play” instead of have sex. Also hate (irrationally) the word serve on recipes. Serve immediately! Too bossy by far!
Also hate “putting food on the table “
Irrational but so real

Oh god, yes. “Play” makes me a bit sick in my mouth. Play is associated with children in my mind and that connection is just all kinds of wrong.

ToWhitToWhoo · 18/09/2023 22:43

Also: overuse of the phrases 'stealth boast' and 'humblebrag'. Not saying these things don't exist, but the terms are often overused by people who seem to see life only in terms of competitiveness and boasting, and can't seem to imagine people having any other motives.

Reaching out - this gives me a mental image of pleading faces and desperate clawing hands. Are you sure that’s how you want to portray your business?

Cuppa

Cheeky takeaway (or cheeky + any other food or drink)

Going forward - we’re all going forward; there’s no other option, so it’s meaningless. You may as well remind people that Tuesday is followed by Wednesday, or that Winter is followed by Spring.

@IsleOfPenguinBollards isn’t Wednesday followed by Tuesday, if we are moving forward?

Teen/s. "Out making memories with my teen".

LastHives · 19/09/2023 08:11

"a lip". " a jean" " a boot" - no, no, no.

worst is 'a pant'

makes me think of some wheezy perv.

SofiaSoFar · 19/09/2023 09:28

"Call him/her/it/them out" I think 'challenge' is the word you're looking for.

"slept with..." Yuk. It's 'sex', ffs.

"I am living in..." since when do you 'live' in a pair of fucking leggings, you numpty.

Awww. I instantly thought of George Michael when I read your post. God bless him.

😁

Edit: before anyone pounces, I mean because he was arrested for cottaging.

"Tummy" when used by adults- middle aged sis, I'm looking at you!! Makes me cringe. Just say stomach!!

I tend to use guts ache. Thinking about it, it sounds horrible.

"Can I get" when ordering a coffee (or anything else).

In a little Dales tearoom someone came in and said Can I get a coffee, the Daleswoman looked at her and said No, sit down and I'll get it! The look on her face said everything about what she thought.

AlternativeCarpark · 19/09/2023 10:46

Robust

As used far too often by politicians or anyone to trying to defend something that went wrong, trying to convince themselves and others they're taking it seriously and will improve things in future. They think using the word to describe what they'll do automatically makes things right, when it really doesn't.

On a lighter note 😁 as others have said, anything described as 'cheeky'. Also 'meal' and not sure why but not a fan of 'moist' either.
