In a supermarket and heard a middle aged woman say 'OH! You've got back off your holibobs then!?'

What is wrong with saying 'holiday'? I actually cringed when I heard it.

Feel free to add your own...

'Tellybox' - Its a television or telly ffs! Zoe Ball drives me made with her repetitive use of the bloody word during her radio show.

Shine a light

Fecking hate this phrase so much, it seemed to come about during the pandemic for some stupid reason, 🤔

RedPony1 · 19/09/2023 12:13

Live, Laugh, Love

What gets me is 'tele' instead of 'telly,' written down. That's pronounced 'teel' in my head. And yes I know how you get that spelling from TELEvision, before someone points out the obvious, it just irritates me, that's all.

And 'tellybox' ffs.....

Pretty much everything coming out of her gob annoys me

My hackles rise when someone says “these people” as it’s usually followed by something negative.

I feel the same about vege instead of veggie.

I also hate when someone says "I just came on the thread to say..." because 99% of the time you don't know what you're going to say until you've read the thread. So you came on the thread to read it. Then decided what to post.

Terrribletwos · 19/09/2023 20:50

The word "look" used by politicians too many times! Just annoying.

The word "floor" when it should be ground ! I know it may be a regional thing but it annoys me.

In a little Dales tearoom someone came in and said Can I get a coffee, the Daleswoman looked at her and said No, sit down and I'll get it! The look on her face said everything about what she thought.

Haha! Excellent!

Just been talking about this on another thread.

'Can/could I get' is very widely used in some areas when ordering coffee etc.

The verb 'to get' has more than one meaning.
In this case the visitor to the tearoom used the verb 'to get' in the sense 'to receive'. This is actually a very widely used meaning of the verb, eg 'I got a text from Mary', ' I got quite a surprise'. Get means 'receive' or 'have' in this sense, not 'obtain' and so carries no implication of helping yourself.

People in other areas aren't familiar with this usage of the verb when ordering food, but of course that unfamiliarity does not mean the phrase itself is incorrect.

SofiaSoFar · 20/09/2023 13:51

It's nothing to do with "areas" it's to do with the type of person.

Dotjones · 20/09/2023 14:00

"Making memories" or "giving experiences" really annoy me.

I also hate the verb "potter" as in "to potter about".

I guess you're trying to be provocative @SofiaSoFar? Well done you.

Maybe do your research before posting next time though.

In the meantime, yours is a perfect example of the type of ignorant judgement of others that I hate most about MN😕

@Polkadotcouch @SofiaSoFar is right though. It isn’t to do with area, it’s just incorrect.

Reaching out
Going forwards
Waiting on (unless used to describe what a waiter/waitress is doing). Surely it's waiting for?
Filling out a form (it should be filling in)
'You got this!' usually followed by this emoji 💪

Are you expert in American English, Australian English, Scottish Standard English, Irish-English etc @yettio?
Do you know the nuances of English language use the world over?
Or are you and @SofiaSoFar simply referencing the English you and those around you speak when you judge something to be wrong or right?

There is more than one English Standard even within the UK.

Indeed. It is just wrong and it is only used by certain people.

Not sure why you're equating being told this with 'ignorant judgement', as you put it.

Polkadotcouch · 20/09/2023 14:54

See my reply above @AllyCart

Chiaseedling · 20/09/2023 14:58

All twee terms like hollibobs, fur baby, living your best life, enjoy every moment, making memories, gotcha day (when you acquired your fur baby).

Edited

@Polkadotcouch There isn’t more than one ‘English standard,’ otherwise it wouldn’t be called English standard.

Polkadotcouch · 20/09/2023 15:08

There's Scottish Standard English just for starters @yettio.
You could have googled you know.

It isn't incorrect.
Her punctuation, however, is.
