In a supermarket and heard a middle aged woman say 'OH! You've got back off your holibobs then!?'

What is wrong with saying 'holiday'? I actually cringed when I heard it.

Feel free to add your own...

Quite common where I live in Scotland.

Yeah. I've never met a 'furious' person in Glasgow. Have met many who were 'raging'.

Bippertyboo2 · 17/09/2023 18:37

Hubs, nom nom and bubba really turn my stomach.

Bippertyboo2 · 17/09/2023 18:44

Oh and tummy, hate, hate, hate this word, no idea why!

Hubby is nauseating

Thighdentitycrisis · 17/09/2023 19:00

Slightly off topic (whoops) but I like using some words mentioned here e.g. :
slacks, reminds me of my grandmother
helping (ok when used with second, second portion sounds wrong)

I don’t like years of age, it bothers me

@marshmallowfinder
I see your movies and films and raise you going to the Pictures!

A lot of these disliked words or phrases are regional, tatties, markies, raging are all common terms in Scotland and Ireland, too many on MN think there's no world outside of SE England. The addition of R to any word annoys me but I realise it's regional.

How am I supposed to know that Markies is commonly used in Scotland when I've only seen it written here in Mumsnet?! And for the record I'm from the southwest!

I think it’s more outside of England than just SE England.

Makes me want to puke

HelpMeGetThrough · 17/09/2023 23:51

Signposting, everybody seems to be bloody signposting these days!!! You see it on here.

"I was hoping someone could signpost me to......"

Such a ridiculous phrase!!!

“Be grateful”

Often said in a condescending, dismissive manner and emotionally manipulative.

“Americanism”

Often about something that actually isn’t universally used in the States and about phrases used or things done in a specific region no different than most countries including the UK and reeks a bit of xenophobia when thrown out in a topic for no reason.

”Woke”

Constantly used incorrectly and by people who seem to lack critical thinking and parroting whatever media tells them to fear even when the issues raised are not a problem in their area.

All the above.

Ie 'train station'. In all likelihood many Americans would call it a 'railroad station' in any case.

KimberleyClark · 18/09/2023 00:07

I hate the words toms, pots and shrooms.

Just a Gentle Reminder!!
so unnecessary
even the Dentist sent me an email with the above phrase!

This! Drives me mad.

If you want something from me just ask.

catrescuelady · 18/09/2023 00:30

They are loved
Loved all the world
You know what I mean ( after every sentence)

echt · 18/09/2023 04:33

Trigger warning - the phrase

Trigger warnings as a thing, both on MN and generally. FFS deal with what you read/see as a grown up. I heard such a warning about the nature of some of the jokes being 'of their time' before an airing of "Round The Horne" on Radio 4 Extra. Only once. I assume they had torrent of complaints.

morethanspice · 18/09/2023 06:48

I hate the expression “play” instead of have sex. Also hate (irrationally) the word serve on recipes. Serve immediately! Too bossy by far!
Also hate “putting food on the table “
Irrational but so real

I’m from Yorkshire. Taties (little different from tatties, it’s said with a long a sound here) is fairly common regional slang here but I still hate it.

Maybe it’s that there’s been a flurry of slightly younger friends/acquaintances getting engaged recently but “Can’t wait to do forever with you”

To me that doesn't make sense, they've already done x years of their life, so won't do forever.

Chances are, they won't make 10 years. God I'm a depressing git on a Monday!!

Anni1234 · 18/09/2023 07:37

When it’s hot outside “It’s scorchio”

Polkadotcouch · 18/09/2023 07:48

I think 'scorchio' is referencing a comedy sketch from The Fast Show @Anni1234

RumNotRun · 18/09/2023 07:50

Ain't. I've noticed people using it on here more often recently. It reminds me of Jeremy Kyle trying to sound tougher.

As well as curated can I add sourced, as in I sourced the ingredients for a lasagne. No, you went shopping, you did not go on a worldwide trek with weapons!
I would also like to add traumatised when all it needs is 'a bit annoyed or upset '.
