Just on the news - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-stoke-staffordshire-66817795

Week after week, there is something wrong with dogs (and the owners) today, I grew up with them and this never, ever happened. Maybe because dogs were treated as dogs and not trophy animals. Awful for everyone.

Crime scene

Man attacked by two dogs near school in Stonnall dies

A man suffers fatal injuries when attacked by two dogs in a street near a school in Staffordshire.

Still heck of a difference between a baby making scary strange noises, and a older child that you can tell not to scream. I have not read it but tend to think the baby was left in the same room as the dog.

Any dog of any breed that is untethered and vicious enough to launch an unprovoked attack on anybody should be destroyed regardless of size or breed. Just because the bite from a small dog is lesser than a large dog does not excuse the fact that the dog is out of control

I agree, and I'd like dog bites to be treated as if they were assaults by the owner and punished accordingly. I suspect it might concentrate a few minds, probably not your aggressive louts with aggressive breeds, but the "he's only being friendly" twits. If their dog biting you meant they'd end up in court they'd keep much closer control of their pets.

From 31 December 2023 it will be against the law to sell, abandon, breed from or give away an American bully XL, or have one in public without a lead or muzzle.

I assume this includes rescue organisations, which is good news (although I fully accept that it will make for some hard times for the organisations that will inevitably have dogs dumped on them).

It really is going to be a very difficult time - the numbers of these dogs in teh general population are so much higher than the previous banned breeds.

Dullardmullard · 31/10/2023 16:13

Who’s going to be policing all of this is my question because the police won’t and can’t, no funding, rescues or specific rescues again no funding and they won’t be allowed if this new rule comes into play.

Are the police going to be heavy handed like they were with the certain type of dogs like in the past.

will there be a spat of reporting from neighbours about xl when it’s not an xl but will be typed and most likely pts.

all this will do is drive the xl under ground just like the pit bulls as we still have them, from unscrupulous breeders for the fighting ones, whilst the law abiding citizens are and will be targeted again.

I refer you to the upthread story of the policeman seriously injured by a dog in the last few days. I can't see they can be heavy handed enough.

Don't be silly @Dotjones , what you need is an attack dog of your own. Sounds like you could use the company.

Most of this is incorrect. You can, if you have the correct paperwork in place and pass the dog on to someone if they have been involved in its care. You need to abide by the rules, have an exemption certificate and third liability insurance (£25 annually). Plenty of advice from defra.

Nothing has been made law yet.

This in my local tesco metro this morning, at around 9am - the dog belonged to an obnoxious / intimidating couple and there were only two female workers on site so they didn’t say / do anything

Makes me laugh as this time last year I tried to take my. dachshund puppy in there, in my arms, in the evening and was denied entrance by the security guard🤨

The Scottish Government haven’t yet mentioned if the ban is to come in here. I’ve emailed my MSP tonight to ask what’s happening along with the photos etc of the attack on my dog and DH’s injuries, I’m furious. I may live here, I don’t need to agree with the government.

Aww, he's just choosing his meal deal, leave him alone!

carchi · 01/11/2023 10:02

Not only should the dog not be in the shop it should most certainly be on a lead. So not sure what your comment means

jeffgoldblum · 01/11/2023 13:44

As someone who is frightened of strange dogs , no dog should be allowed in a supermarket! ( unless it's a guide dog) , what if the staff member is afraid or allergic?

A lot of people apparently “train” their own “assistance” dogs. Aka they don’t want to leave them alone so claim they’re assistance animals. The law is very grey around what constitutes an assistance animal. There really should be a register but there isn’t which means anyone can walk into a shop and say their dog is an “assistance” dog without being challenged. If they are challenged by the public or staff they scream the 2010 Equality Act. People also buy shit “legal” cards from Etsy to put on their dogs to pretend they’re assistance dogs. It’s absolutely ridiculous the lengths some people will go to.

I’m nervous of some dogs too. I agree with you, dogs shouldn’t be allowed in shops or supermarkets unless they have been professionally trained to an extremely high standard to mitigate a disability. Carers can mitigate a disability better than dogs imo. I have a medical alert dog and don’t take him unless I need to shop on my own. I can never understand those on a few FB groups that I’m on that insist they need their “assistance” dogs when they already have carers with them.

No doubt a few will jump on this post screaming that they “need” a dog with them at all times. 🙄

I refer you to this, where the dog is a tiny dog, and so it's fine.

Why did you approach them and ask why the dog is looking at sandwiches

myopinionmatters · 02/11/2023 02:12

I just hope this law doesn't cause harrassment for people who own other bull breeds. Everyone thinks they're a dog expert these days usually getting it wrong and causing drama for people.

dawngreen · 02/11/2023 09:07

I agree with dogs been on a lead in public area's like shops. Some people with working dogs blah mines a working dog. I just think so what my dog is trained well too. But I still put my dog on a lead when out.

SomeCatFromJapan · 02/11/2023 10:35

I don't think dogs should be in shops at all unless they're registered service dogs.

I don’t think dogs should be on a lead in shops, I don’t think they should be in shops at all apart from registered assistance dogs. Which has always been the norm. I’ve just recently noticed one or two threads on here about seeing ordinary dogs in shops and some shopkeepers allowing it but let’s hope it doesn’t catch on.

Like I said, they were in a couple and they were obnoxious and intimidating.
I didn’t want to risk being treated agressively nor being targeted in my neighborhood.

Sarvanga38 · 04/11/2023 14:29

I am getting very irritated with reading that these dogs have been 'taken to a secure kennel'. Why on earth should some poor, probably low paid (animal work is rarely otherwise) employee have to deal with these things who are on high alert after attacks?
