Just on the news - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-stoke-staffordshire-66817795

Week after week, there is something wrong with dogs (and the owners) today, I grew up with them and this never, ever happened. Maybe because dogs were treated as dogs and not trophy animals. Awful for everyone.

Crime scene

Man attacked by two dogs near school in Stonnall dies

A man suffers fatal injuries when attacked by two dogs in a street near a school in Staffordshire.

It’s the same in France.
My dh was bitten by a neighbour’s dog in June. Fortunately it wasn’t serious.
The guy has been told to fence his land properly, he still has not done this.
He’s been visited by the police.
His dog is still getting out.
I don’t know what the answer is.

301963Laurie · 15/09/2023 11:33

Unfortunately the type of owner who generally own this type of dog are not going to follow any rules !
Absolutely shocking. Police should be allowed to stop and question any dog owner who has one of these ‘big’ dogs and ask them basic questions about safety etc !

whyisitallsohard · 15/09/2023 11:34

Muzzles in public. That way, you know members of the public will film and take photos of owners who don’t muzzle their dogs and report them without being identified themselves. These dogs have killed children. It’s no different from friggin Americans allowing guns with no control. We’re a country allowing this to happen.

Either the government needs to remove dogs from private ownership or train the public in how to fight them off. Dogs are now a weapon rather than a pet so we need to be able to defend against them accordingly. I'd like to see the laws relaxed so we can carry guns to use on dogs (only farmers really have the right and ability to shoot dogs at the moment) or at least carry knives. It wouldn't stop all dog attacks but carrying a "dog knife" and being trained in how to kill a dog would stop some attacks definitely.

Are you on glue? 😂

Weddingpuzzle · 15/09/2023 11:34

I agree that muzzling by law is the answer. I think they should also be kept on a lead by law and the consequence for not muzzling and being off lead in a public place should be very, very harsh. DH got bitten by dog on our honeymoon and the owner didn't even apologise. Just wittered on that it had never bitten before whilst blood poured out of his leg. I had just had a hysterectomy in January and an off lead dog bounded up to me and knocked me over, bursting stitches. We don't have a dog - these were just random dogs in the countryside behaving badly. I feel very worried when out walking about a dog attack now and it feels like a dogs right to roam is taking precedence over people's right to roam which is absolutely ridiculous.

DewinDwl · 15/09/2023 11:35

I can't believe that these animals that can and regularly do hurt and kill people are allowed to roam everywhere freely. It's nuts.

The latest attack happened outside a primary school at 3:15!

Muzzling as a minimum; and manslaughter prison sentences for irresponsible owners. Am afraid I partially agree with the poster upthread and in some cases the dog should be considered a weapon as they are bred, trained and used as such.

oldwhyno · 15/09/2023 11:35

muzzling all dogs is a stupid and unhelpful idea.

Owners of these Bully XL dogs need to have them neutered immediately, walk them only on a harness and lead, with a muzzle. The government needs to add them to the list of banned breeds as a matter of extreme urgency. Owners that will not have their animals put down should be required to have third party damage insurance if they want to take them out of their homes.

EvilElsa · 15/09/2023 11:35

As a dog owner of a soppy arse lurcher I'd be more than happy for stronger laws to come in regarding dog ownership and access to public areas. Mine is the perfect kids dog but I would never let her off lead in a park/kids area. The rise is these dog attacks is absolutely terrifying -unfortunately someone in our tiny village has just got a bloody XL bully. They are nice people and likely to train it but what the fuck were they thinking?! Of all the breeds to pick.

dameofdilemma · 15/09/2023 11:36

Let's not get sidetracked by the extreme post....

Other European countries manage pet ownership better - eg mandatory dog training (enforced properly) as a condition of dog ownership and licensing.
Mandatory short leads and muzzles in public areas.
Designated off lead dog exercise areas.
Better regulation of dog walkers etc.

Theres no reason the UK can't do the same. Unfortunately we have a government in thrall to an upper class devoted to their hounds.

🙄really

Ellie1015 · 15/09/2023 11:36

Awful. Poor man amd his family/friends.

The owner should be treated like a drunk driver or someone who stabbed another person. Owning a dog that is so out of control and dancerous should carry much higher punishment for the owner.

Bemyclementine · 15/09/2023 11:37

@Needanewnamebeingwatched I'd agree. Simple solution and one which is very obvious if not being complied with
. Would need so e sort of power to sieze an unmuzzled dog though.

disappearingfish · 15/09/2023 11:37

I really don't agree with muzzling every single dog in public. There is a massive difference in risk between an untrained XL bully and an arthritic old lab out pottling, on a lead.

I am pretty certain that in many, many instances like this tragedy, someone would have raised safety concerns about the dog before. We need a properly resourced service to deal with neglected, out of control and untrained dogs.

We need legislation, which includes making the breeder/seller responsible for the dog for life - not just the current owner. So many of these stories the owner has only had the dog a few weeks.

cocoloco117 · 15/09/2023 11:37

The country’s blind spot over these fucking animals is ridiculous. Enough is enough.

I can see the headlines in a year's time if @Dotjones was PM. Women would start walking at night with 'dog knives' and stab all the poor would-be rapists Grin

vodkaredbullgirl · 15/09/2023 11:38

ComtesseDeSpair · 15/09/2023 11:27

I suspect we could solve an enormous part of the problem if councils and housing associations prohibited dogs over a certain size and weight being kept in their properties and strictly enforced it, as is common policy in public housing (and indeed, apartment blocks generally) in many other countries. Yes yes, we’re not supposed to say it, but I’m willing to bet at least 95% of the owners of these dogs are workshy layabouts in social housing.

So only Council and HA have these dogs.

Whatswhatwhichiswhich · 15/09/2023 11:39

@Dotjones you’ve completely lost touch with reality, that’s absolutely terrifying that you can watch what goes on in the world and think arming people with knives and guns is a good idea. You need an urgent psychiatric evaluation.

placemats · 15/09/2023 11:39

Potentially dangerous dogs, all of them, should be muzzled in public.

Ohyay · 15/09/2023 11:40

Friend is dog handler and the best advice they gave me was if you find yourself trying to help someone or your dog thats being attacked by a dog thats latched on (certain breeds tend to lock on more during an attack) a finger straight up the bum. The shock will nearly always create a release.

One of those things that now lives in my mind forever.

Fiddlerdragon · 15/09/2023 11:40

Anyone wanna guess the breeds of the two dogs involved? It’s not confirmed yet but I know what I’m thinking

You want to legalise carrying knives and train people how to kill with them? Have you been smoking something?

Whatswhatwhichiswhich · 15/09/2023 11:41

@Ohyay that actually made me laugh, but I will remember that! 😂

Weddingpuzzle · 15/09/2023 11:42

I disagree that only 'potentially' dangerous dogs should be muzzled. It makes it too arbitrary and too open to interpretation - if everyone had to muzzle their dogs and everyone had to have them on leads there's no grey area. Easier to see who isn't complying if the majority do it.

maybe instead of “dog knives” we need “dog probes” for their arses.
