Just on the news - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-stoke-staffordshire-66817795

Week after week, there is something wrong with dogs (and the owners) today, I grew up with them and this never, ever happened. Maybe because dogs were treated as dogs and not trophy animals. Awful for everyone.

Crime scene

Man attacked by two dogs near school in Stonnall dies

@ChristopherTalken probably because there's a lot of hanging around in one place at a protest. Most dogs get bored, restless and fractious hanging around in one place, especially on leads. A protest is hardly going to want fractious dogs barking are they? If it was a walking protest the dogs wouldn't get so bored.
It happens at dog shows a lot with all the waiting around, dogs can get bored and a bit snappy.

Really? Could have been like this.

I’d want proof it was in fact an xl bully as some papers have reported wrongly what breed it was before actually checking.

why to get the media frothing again

I don't think the poor sod who was attacked gives a shiny shit about what breed it was.

dawngreen · 25/09/2023 12:35

Crowds of ppl, hot weather, responsible ppl leave their pets at home.

They might not granted but someone has said it was an xl and it could been a lab for all we know but can’t let that get in the way of the baying media agenda though.

CBAanymoreTBH · 25/09/2023 19:14

@Dullardmullard he identified it as a type that looked like an XL or similar. It was grey so not a boxer or cane corso & defo not a lab

Dullardmullard · 25/09/2023 20:42

Grey and automatic it’s an xl

dog attacks are on increase yes but not all are xl or staffys.

better ownership and training yes outright bans no

Grey and automatic it’s an xl.

Now that’s not what was said is it, by anybody? The pp said it was grey in direct response to your suggestion that it could have been a lab.

Yet...most of them are 🤔

Actually they are not as the others don’t get reported like the bigger breeds

Thosesummernights · 26/09/2023 15:55

Only the serious attacks make the news. It’s no coincidence…

Dotjones · 15/09/2023 11:13

Either the government needs to remove dogs from private ownership or train the public in how to fight them off. Dogs are now a weapon rather than a pet so we need to be able to defend against them accordingly. I'd like to see the laws relaxed so we can carry guns to use on dogs (only farmers really have the right and ability to shoot dogs at the moment) or at least carry knives. It wouldn't stop all dog attacks but carrying a "dog knife" and being trained in how to kill a dog would stop some attacks definitely.

Surely this most be a joke.

dawngreen · 26/09/2023 19:10

Do we get feral youths that harm and kill ppl removed, and get knifes to kill them too?

Thosesummernights · 26/09/2023 20:21

@dawngreen because humans and canines are the same species?!

Sounds good to me. I’d rather face a dog than a feral youth.

@Dotjones are you on crack? 🤣🤣🤣

Another fatality yesterday and on Monday a 20 month old child was attacked. Here is a video explaining how to choke out a dog

Some posters on here are really coming across as cruel, nasty c*s. Almost revelling in dogs being put to sleep.

Has anyone considered how cruel it is to keep a dog on a lead all the time and possibly with a muzzle on too?

We make all the decisions for dogs all the time and control what they do and when, and now you want to take small freedoms and choices away.

I hope if you ever get stuck on a mountain needing search and rescue you don't expect a dog to find you.

And I also hope that if you're ever in a care home and they have a PAT dog that it's a massive bull breed and it gives you a big cuddle.

Of course some will see it as cruel to have a dog on a lead and in a muzzle, but it is necessary in order to keep the public safe and that is the most important factor. If someone sees this as cruel and does not wish to do this then don't get a dog - it is simple.

We are seeing the outcome of keeping essentially wild animals as pets - and forcing them to conform to OUR needs rather than considering their own. Dogs are programmed genetically to attack and kill - that is how a dog survives. We can take them into our homes, coddle them all we like, treat them as pretend humans - but we cannot alter their basic nature.

As for the argument that we should let these dangerous dogs continue to wreak their havoc because under some circumstances dogs do good things - this is nonsense. You might as well say it is OK for a paramedic to beat his wife because in other situations he does good.

CBAanymoreTBH · 05/10/2023 09:22

It's more cruel to have thousands of animals rotting in shelters because there are no legislations to stop breeding.

We don't need literal beasts on our streets. There is zero point to continue allowing massive dogs to be kept as pets.

reesewithoutaspoon · 05/10/2023 09:28

The fact that these dogs can kill an adult male shows how lethal they are. In the end they are animals and have animal instincts.
If a jack Russell attacked you would have a chance of fighting them off, but these dogs are 9 stone of solid muscle that instinctively go for the throat and tear and shake. They literally rip your throat out.
I don't care how much of a big softie you think your particular dog is, no one knows what could trigger a specific dog to attack and once they do decide to attack they are pretty lethal and virtually unstoppable. The fact that adult males have been unable to defend themselves, shows how powerful these dogs are and they shouldn't be allowed in public without a muzzle.

This is exactly it. Any dog can attack, I have had dogs all my life. You should always operate on the understanding your dog could snap. If my dog snapped and attacked, I could pick her up and throw her in the garden.

These XL Bullies have powerful jaws with insane bite pressure. They kill if they attack unless you’re extremely lucky. No person can over power them, they are no more suitable as a pet than a lion

Do you know, this made me think there are loads of ways that dogs get treated differently to humans. I mean, I can take my dog out on a collar and lead on the street so it can shit on the pavement (always scoop and bag of course!) but do the same with my boyfriend and suddenly we're 'outraging public decency'. Thanks for your insightful post calling out the double standard and how ridiculous it is that we don't deal with dogs and people in exactly the same way!

CBAanymoreTBH · 18/10/2023 08:08

@BreakfastAtMidnight

Absolutely agree. Dogs are bred for the economic gain of these so called dog lovers. They are made to give birth & their puppies sold. Also various dog breeds only exist, of course, to provide the right aesthetic for the people who want them as pets. To then say all dogs are the same and compare them to people is ludicrous, as you say.

Head of Companion Animals at RSPCA saying NAXLBALT, if you will. Also accepted that some people own them purely to intimidate and cause harm.

dawngreen · 18/10/2023 11:08

It was a response to idiots saying we should all be able to carry knifes. I NEVER SAID DOGS WERE THE SAME AS HUMANS!!

Bemyclementine · 18/10/2023 11:31

Another XL bully attacked its owner in Norfolk yesterday, a woman in her 60s who adopted the dog from the Dogs Trust a month ago. It escaped and was eventually destroyed by police with the owners permission. Owner, female in her 60s, remains in hospital awaiting surgery
