Just on the news - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-stoke-staffordshire-66817795

Week after week, there is something wrong with dogs (and the owners) today, I grew up with them and this never, ever happened. Maybe because dogs were treated as dogs and not trophy animals. Awful for everyone.

Crime scene

Man attacked by two dogs near school in Stonnall dies

A man suffers fatal injuries when attacked by two dogs in a street near a school in Staffordshire.

Either the government needs to remove dogs from private ownership or train the public in how to fight them off. Dogs are now a weapon rather than a pet so we need to be able to defend against them accordingly. I'd like to see the laws relaxed so we can carry guns to use on dogs (only farmers really have the right and ability to shoot dogs at the moment) or at least carry knives. It wouldn't stop all dog attacks but carrying a "dog knife" and being trained in how to kill a dog would stop some attacks definitely.

I‘m sorry but this is stark raving bonkers. Have you seen the US?!

This is like when Americans suggest giving guns to teachers as a way to help with school shootings.

Good grief! You are quite terrifying!

I think it's time all dogs should be muzzled when out in public.

And i say that as a dog owner/lover of many years

As a dog owner, I would be fine with that and would absolutely obey such a law.

I'm willing to bet the tossers with aggressive trophy dogs would not, mind.

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 15/09/2023 11:25

Ignore Dot - she says the same insanity on every single dog thread 🙄

Bramblecrumble22 · 15/09/2023 11:25

Absolutely nuts, stabbing a dog would unlikely be safer, probably make it more vicious... but teaching to stand like a tree, don't run, back off slowly, use a loud but firm voice but not scream could help. But really dogs are the problem.

The problem is, the people with dangerous dogs won't obey and then if they do attack, the muzzled dogs are defenceless and have no way of protecting themselves.

Um, what...? Maybe look up the statistics for knife crime and then the statistics for serious/fatal dog attacks. This can't be what you seriously think, that's insane.

JFC. Words fail me.

ComtesseDeSpair · 15/09/2023 11:27

I suspect we could solve an enormous part of the problem if councils and housing associations prohibited dogs over a certain size and weight being kept in their properties and strictly enforced it, as is common policy in public housing (and indeed, apartment blocks generally) in many other countries. Yes yes, we’re not supposed to say it, but I’m willing to bet at least 95% of the owners of these dogs are workshy layabouts in social housing.

I'd like the current dog friendly setting to be reversed too.

I'm fed up of not being able to go anywhere without being bothered by dogs.

Department stores, shops, pubs, cafes, restaurants- dogs are a bloody nightmare.

My partner and I spent over £100 at Gaucho one weekend sitting outside only for it to be spoilt by dogs barking and begging for food at tables.

They're unhygienic and it should go back to them not being allowed anywhere. You want a dog then take it for a walk- don't use a shopping trip to exercise it instead.

This.

I love and trust my dogs implicitly, but they are not human, and I muzzle all three of them when out. One of them is an ex therapy dog and has literally passed tests to confirm he is the lowest of the low as a bite risk. Still muzzle him. Because what if? This removes all possibility of them hurting anyone.

Ostryga · 15/09/2023 11:28

All dogs muzzled in public as a bare minimum. Proper funding for dog wardens so people can call and dogs can be removed if they’re not wearing one.

I am sick to fucking death of people mindlessly losing their lives for these animals! Dogs are not a right, and people shouldn’t be in danger walking on a street because of them.

Fuckingfuming1 · 15/09/2023 11:28

I read somewhere that makes people who carry knives and up with it being used against them, or they fall on it and injure themselves sometimes fatally so that sounds like an extremely bad plan. Also do we give a knife to the three and four-year-olds that seem to be the dogs favourite snack.

Scotsgirl001 · 15/09/2023 11:29

Ive started to develop a bit of anxiety when I'm out walking my wee spaniel, especially in wooded areas etc where lots of people have their dogs off leads. He's very timid, and I'm always on edge that we will come across an XL bully or similar not on a lead and the owner has no control. In fact its not just that breed, its any breed of dog, owners always say ' dont worry he/she is friendly' as it/they come towards us but sadly from experience thats not always the case. Ive been thinking about getting some kind of pepper spray type thing to carry with me. Its annoying that I should feel vulnerable doing something as pleasurable as walking my dog.

Batshit!

Ostryga · 15/09/2023 11:30

And I agree with pp. No dogs in public places like restaurants, cafes, parks where children go. They are on a lead at all times unless in a specific fenced off dog area.

Soontobe60 · 15/09/2023 11:30

But at least people could see the owner wasn’t obeying the law and take appropriate action?

I would assume most dogs can't protect themselves unmuzzled against these aggressive dogs anyway but at least (hopefully) the police would respond very quickly to a large unmuzzled dog report before anything bad happened if every dog was supposed to be muzzled.

What could possibly go wrong?!?

However you raise an important issue in that the failure to do anything about these dogs means that people WILL use that as a reason or an excuse for carrying weapons and some of these weapons will inevitably end up being used on humans.

I can’t imagine wanting to have a gun to use on people but if I lived in an area where there were high numbers of out of control dogs I can see why you might consider it.

Besides, a family a few streets behind me in a house that they own have an American Bulley, so shove that up your pipe and smoke it.
