Just on the news - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-stoke-staffordshire-66817795

Week after week, there is something wrong with dogs (and the owners) today, I grew up with them and this never, ever happened. Maybe because dogs were treated as dogs and not trophy animals. Awful for everyone.

Crime scene

Man attacked by two dogs near school in Stonnall dies

A man suffers fatal injuries when attacked by two dogs in a street near a school in Staffordshire.

PDD's should be neutered, chipped, licensed and the parent owner should insure third party.

neilyoungismyhero · 15/09/2023 11:42

In Spain dogs over a certain weight have to be muzzled in public.

TregunaMekoides · 15/09/2023 11:42

I think it's another casualty of the pandemic. Certain people got dogs during the lockdowns who perhaps weren't aware of what it takes to properly look after and train a dog. Now those dogs are poorly trained but fully grown and pose a risk.
I think dogs should absolutely be licenced and muzzled.

I’ve just seen Sunak on Twitter has announced a ban on XL bullies. Finally!

Either the government needs to remove dogs from private ownership or train the public in how to fight them off. Dogs are now a weapon rather than a pet so we need to be able to defend against them accordingly. I'd like to see the laws relaxed so we can carry guns to use on dogs (only farmers really have the right and ability to shoot dogs at the moment) or at least carry knives. It wouldn't stop all dog attacks but carrying a "dog knife" and being trained in how to kill a dog would stop some attacks definitely.

That's a bit extreme!!

Just NO NO NO NO NO to carrying guns - do you want to turn the UK into the US? Replace violent dogs with violent weapon-carrying humans - are you mad?!

Removing dogs from private ownership is utterly preposterous. Just how to you propose to train the public to fight dogs off either?

There needs to be legislation to ban the main breeds of killer dogs. Maybe some mandatory training for dogs and their owners? Legislation over the control of dogs in a public place?

manontroppo · 15/09/2023 11:43

How the bloody hell are you supposed to aim a finger up the bum of a doing going mental??

vodkaredbullgirl · 15/09/2023 11:43

Ohyay · 15/09/2023 11:40

Friend is dog handler and the best advice they gave me was if you find yourself trying to help someone or your dog thats being attacked by a dog thats latched on (certain breeds tend to lock on more during an attack) a finger straight up the bum. The shock will nearly always create a release.

One of those things that now lives in my mind forever.

Don't fancy trying that on my 2, when they play fighting lol

Good, That's been a long time coming.

So what happens to existing ones?

Erm, not sure where to begin with this!

VickyEadieofThigh · 15/09/2023 11:24

As a dog owner, I would be fine with that and would absolutely obey such a law.

I'm willing to bet the tossers with aggressive trophy dogs would not, mind.

I'm not muzzling my westie because people have bred and developed monster attack dogs. That's like banning dessert spoons because of knife crime.

Ostryga · 15/09/2023 11:45

Appalling that it’s taken yet another life to get these dogs banned.

And clearly we can all make a very educated guess about what breeds were involved in this attack now.

ValkyrieAssassin · 15/09/2023 11:46

Needanewnamebeingwatched · 15/09/2023 11:22

I think it's time all dogs should be muzzled when out in public.

And i say that as a dog owner/lover of many years

This is more sensible than everyone carrying guns or a dog knife. [understatement alert]

And I am not sure I disagree with @Needanewnamebeingwatched

Yes, I agree with this. I am terrified of all dogs.

zurala · 15/09/2023 11:46

Unfortunately, dog owners are always convinced that their dog wouldn't hurt a fly, and so we are now in a situation where dogs are bloody everywhere, and everyone is expected to put up with the risk.

Rudderneck · 15/09/2023 11:47

I'm not sure that there is especially an increase in dog attacks. I think the reporting is now much wider spread, so we hear about them a lot more. Including from outside our own community.

In the scheme of things, dog attacks are actually pretty rare. Compared to, say, car accidents.

Yes definitely this. It’s the best most common sense solution.

They've been banned
Breaking news

Johnnylewis · 15/09/2023 11:47

I agree with all dogs being muzzled in public

Would also like to see a reversal of everywhere being so dog friendly...shops for example should be assistance dogs only

As for the police establishing the breed in this attack...ooh, I wonder what it possibly could be.

Ringpeace · 15/09/2023 11:47

It is legal to carry a knife. I have a swiss army knife on my key ring that I use almost every day for small tasks.

It's not a 'dog knife' but in extremis it could be. There are some very irresponsible owners of badly-trained aggressive dogs where we live.

ListenLinda · 15/09/2023 11:47

Just seen the breaking news, XL bullys to be banned.
what does that mean for people who already own this breed?

Chasetherainblownfearsaway · 15/09/2023 11:48

All existing XL American Bullies should have to be put down when the ban comes in (or within, say, 6 weeks of it coming into force). No exceptions.

Iheartpizza · 15/09/2023 11:49

I've just seen another horrific video/cctv of a 10 year old boy being mauled outside his home, not far from this latest incident, which happened a few days ago.

Lots seems to be happening in Birmingham/Midlands.

and yet there will still be people crowing on about how it's not the breed, it's always the owners.

NoCharnce · 15/09/2023 11:49

allmyliesaretrue · 15/09/2023 11:43

Good, That's been a long time coming.

So what happens to existing ones?

My understanding is that all XL bullies will now have to be assessed. Once assessed if they are not deemed to be aggressive they will have to be registered and leashed muzzled at all times in public. They could also be forcibly spayed or neutered. Those deemed too aggressive or unpredictable will be seized and destroyed.

CatamaranViper · 15/09/2023 11:50

Asides from the obvious (and more important) potential loss of life from these dog attacks, I'm also worried about the impact this has on other dogs.
Yesterday I was walking into a shop on the highstreet, person was walking a boxer dog up the high street and a woman freaked out and ran into the shop telling the staff that someone had a bully dog outside the shop and to call the police.

Dog was doing nothing wrong but I'm worried about the potential mass hysteria if the government doesn't act soon.
