Lost my cool with school run mum

I’m at my absolute wits end. Recently bought a house near the kids primary school and like most primary schools the parking at school run time is a nightmare. There is one mum that constantly parks over my drive blocking me in or out. I work as an on call palliative care nurse and twice now have been late to call outs to provide pain relief and other things to patients at the end of life. I’ve tried to talk to her nicely and she just drives away. A few weeks ago my husband was trying to pull in the drive after work and she was blocking again. There was a queue of traffic behind him and he had to pull over and ask her to move so he could get off the road. She said she would when she was ready. Sometimes she’s there and there are spaces all the way up and down the road but she still blocks my drive.
today she blocked me again - I’ve just finished a night shift and I saw red. I asked her to stop parking and tried to explain I needed to get in and out quickly for work. She just shouted over me so I told her I would slash her tyres next time. I know I was unreasonable to say that and I am really ashamed of myself but I’m absolutely at my wits end. What do I do?!

Go to the school with this and they should tell her not to park there. My child’s primary would always tell parents that were parking inconsiderately.

i live opposite an infant/junior school. For the last 29 years. The traffic is a nightmare. Has been steadily getting worse over the last five years particularly the last two. Todays normally ten min bus journey took TWENTY FIVE minutes. The bus driver could see that the three cars in front of him had ONE parent and ONE child in it. Ludicrous. Been living here 29 years and it never used to be like this. Im going to ring the Head and ask him if he can ask the parents to carpool or something.

Could you take photos of the bad parking, (I think blocking a driveway is a traffic offence?) noting dates and times, take her reg, and then ask the local PCSO to speak with her?

Copy in the school also?

Edited

This is the grown up thing to do. A fun alternative would be to sprinkle her windscreen with vegetable oil.

Livelovebehappy · 15/09/2023 20:04

Schools are really good with these sort of things. I had the same problem, and took pictures and sent to the school head, who said they’d sort it. The woman no longer parks accross my drive. Failing that, smear margarine across her windscreen. It’s a bugger to get off.

Yalta · 15/09/2023 20:07

I will come round and park my old van in your driveway then reverse into her by accident as though I wasn’t expecting a car to be there

Once threatened a CF who stopped their car directly outside a shop on a single lane one way road and got out giving me and the rest of the queue behind me hand gestures to say F. Off
Then went into the shop to do their shopping
I was in my tank like old Volvo estate. I also got out and went into the shop and shouted “Would the owner of car number plate XXX XXX please move your vehicle otherwise I will move it for you”

I saw her look at my vehicle and look at her shiny new vehicle and you have never seen anyone move so fast.

You slash her tyres, that’s what you do

Given that the OP has threatened the woman with this action, the woman will have zero doubt who is responsible and the OP can probably expect it to escalate, with e.g. bricks through windows. I wouldn't risk it in her place.
I also don't think the woman would take the slightest bit of notice of a headteacher asking her not to block the OP's drive.

Youdoyoutoday · 15/09/2023 20:10

Take photos, email them to the school and insist they get the traffic camera car thingy out from the local council!!

Baggingarea · 15/09/2023 20:16

What a dick. Since becoming a parent I've increasingly noticed there are parents out there who think their needs trumps that if others. Saw a dad barge in front of the frailest old man at the supermarket the other day with his child. These people are making a terrible example. Agree with the massive "nurse on call" sign suggestion. These ppl deserve to be shamed!

WonderingWanda · 15/09/2023 20:17

Is it possible you could arrange with your dh and/or a neighbour block her in at each end when she parks in front of your drive by parking bumper to bumper then just go indoors and ignore her. It's so annoying when people do this. A visitor used to do this to me. One day he was blocking my drive when I came home so I blocked him in and ignored him for ages. Then when I eventually moved I really told him off....he's not done it again.

100% this.
I can't believe she told your husband that she would move when she was ready! I would have started honking the horn and shouting at her. I couldn't put up with this !

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this but rather than slashing her tyres, take the valve cap off and use a small screwdriver or thin pliers to press down in the valve. It deflates the tire without any criminal damage.

Tyre extinguishers specialise in this sort of thing:

Good luck with that one. Your post has nothing to do with people parking in a inconsiderate possibly illegal manner.

Ejismyf · 15/09/2023 20:50

Na fuck her the stupid bitch, as someone who is reliant right now on palliative nurses to come provide my end of life mum with pain relief I'd go fucking slash her tyres myself if she'd held you up coming to provide pain relief. Take her picture and send it to the school and ask them to have a word of the issues she's causing.

Why is it "ludicrous"? I've got one child, and some days need to drop DS on my way to work. How am I supposed to carpool?

Inastatus · 15/09/2023 20:51

YANBU. Accidentally sprinkle a load of tacks in your driveway!

Vanilladanish · 15/09/2023 10:39

Thank you so much for the good advice. There’s lots of things you’ve mentioned that I haven’t tried so that’s what I will do next. Plus you’ve all made me feel better about my burst of anger. Thank you! X

Your burst of anger was perfectly justified!

The woman was a self entitled bitch.

Not sure I'd go slashing tires, but I would certainly look at planning to block her in front and back then refusing to move your car.

MrsKeats · 15/09/2023 20:56

I am in the same position.
You can buy cones on Amazon.
Plague the school all the time and block your own drive when you feel you need to.

JenniferBooth · 15/09/2023 20:57

@AndIKnewYouMeantIt this was at 3.40pm this afternoon.

@kitsuneghost I live in social housing so didnt get to choose where i live as i didnt buy So going by your logic i have more right to moan then no?

The parents used to park in all our car parks meaning the residents couldnt. The housing association employed a ticketing company and they got an £80 fine every time.

bombastix · 15/09/2023 21:01

Marge on the windscreen seems good.

swettymutha · 15/09/2023 21:08

take photos and tell the school everything. Say that if this continues you’ll be contacting council, police and local MP/councillors because of the nature of your job. I’d also personally block with bins or put cones out, I’ve done this myself because we have a bad street for parking with people with long term serious health conditions who need both carers and ambulance to be able to access the street.

Pinksmyfavoritecolour · 15/09/2023 21:13

Write in lipstick on her windows it's a bugger to get off, Ide write the c word over and over daily but if your nice just crap Parker until she gets the message, I'm sure she won't appreciate driving around with it written on her back window, you've tried the nice way, time to stop being nice

billysillydilly · 15/09/2023 21:18

complain to the school & show photos

billysillydilly · 15/09/2023 21:18

then key her car

billysillydilly · 15/09/2023 21:21

I don't agree with contacting the school. It's not their problem to get involved in. Leave them out of it.

It's really common for schools to get involved
