How bothered are you about Small Boats?

1000 replies

Spinet · 14/09/2023 11:19

I think the idea that people think Small Boats with illegal immigrants on them is a really pressing issue is made up by politicians to have something to campaign on. Am I right? Is this a pressing issue as far as you're concerned?

I'm not really talking about immigration/ asylum seekers in general, just the small boats everyone keeps mentioning. If you're worried about people dying in the channel I get that, but do you think people finding their way here illegally is a major issue for our country at the moment?

I think it's clear I don't but I will accept I'm wrong about this being a made up issue if the majority disagree with me.

If you want to vote YABU= this is one of my top ten concerns. YANBU = I don't think it's a top ten issue for the country.

Of course it will, why would they sign up to it otherwise?

It’s taking on the EU burden but not much benefit

You are right, when I injure myself I don't go and see a doctor I just reset my broken arm myself because I am an adult.

You are getting a plaster not a fully paid life for nowt. The kind of looking after you mean is purely financial.

What are these normal channels that are available for someone in Afganistan or Syria to apply for a Tier 2 visa?

I've no idea. I'm not an expert in immigration, but I am an expert in knowing you're safer in France than on a dinghy in the channel. I don't know what point you're trying to prove, but it's not making you look any brighter.

Lastchancechica · 14/09/2023 20:56

Lastchancechica · 14/09/2023 20:55

Why would anyone ever sign up for that!?? Much less a wannabe British PM
who must know immigration is tinderbox politics.

And it is going so well under Sunak, or would you prefer to call him Sun?

I have to say I assumed the poster was refering to Sunak as the description fitted.

Since the constituency was established in 1932 North Shropshire has always returned a Tory MP, in 1932 they did also return a Whig as the 2nd representative of the constituency. In 2021 there was a huge swing to the Lib Dems it what has always been a deeply conservative rural constituency.

That swing was a direct result of Owen Paterson's corruption though wasn't it?

Also it's interesting that N Shropshire went for a Lib Dem swing rather than Labour who prior to the byelection were second behind the Conservatives with 22% of the vote. Labour actually lost >12% of their vote share in the 2021 byelection so the voters didn't exactly swing full on left did they.

I still stand by my previous comments re: Electoral Calculus but if they turn out to be spot on then please feel free to remind me the morning after the next GE and I will accept you were right with good grace 🙂

They must be feeling quite surprised and happy about that

I mean they have their own infighting and issues between Italy and others and then someone without obligation offers up taking the burden

For what? To ‘smash the gangs’

A total fantasy. No one has stopped smuggling by catching all the traffickers

I don't know how to put a plaster cast on, so when I break my arm I just sort of bend it back to about the right shape and get on with it, because I am an adult and have to look after myself.

It's certainly had some dedicated posters hasn't it? Four or five have spent all day on it! That's what I call a bubble.

I didn't need educating, I asked for opinions. I got them, and many of them I agreed with

So when you said that migrants from Afganistan or Syria could apply for Tier 2 skilled workers visa through the normal channels you were not aware that those channels are not available to someone who lives in Afganistan or Syria.

Are you perhaps also unaware that asylum seekers have an absolute right in UK and international law to apply for asylum in the UK no matter how they arrive here, and no matter which if any other countries they have travelled through to get here.

Dinghies in the Channel - Illegal entrants and immigration offences - Levins

There is much controversy in the media at the moment about migrants crossing the Channel in dinghies. In this article, we set out to explain some of the relevant law and clear up some misconceptions. This article is intended to be a general commentary...

Similar corruption is rife throughout the Tory party, so that would suggest we can expect similar swings in other constituencies as well.

If the swing in the next general election was as small as it was in the Uxbridge by election then we can expect a Labour government.

SherbetDips · 14/09/2023 21:05

They need stopping! It’s dangerous not to mention gangs are charging these desperate people a small fortune to be dumped here with nothing.

they need to change the laws so we can just send them back where they came from.

im not anti immigration or racist before anyone starts!! I’m just sick of every man and his dog coming here.

Lastchancechica · 14/09/2023 21:07

I can honestly say that if Labour win and deliver on anything like this free for all, we will sadly see the rise and rise of the far right.

Our country does not deserve to lose its reputation for tolerance and kind values because the lefties didn’t have the wherewithal to see the endgame.

From an entirely practical point of view how do you propose sending someone back to Afganistan or Syria?

When Labour win the next General Election won't we have seen a decline in the Far Right, given that we currently have a fairly Far Right government?

I can't.. quite.... believe you said that last bit@Lastchancechica . You have not demonstrated such learning yourself at all. You've just spent a really long time posting and posting the same anti-labour sentiments when I never mentioned Labour to begin with (and FYI voting Labour doesn't preclude you from caring about the small boats). And linking to articles that don't say what you think they do. So while there are lots of different opinions on here that I don't agree with but have made me think, none of yours fit that description.

No, it’s just by nature a conservative country. Most people do not want uncontrolled immigration. It’s amazing that you still don’t seem to understand that, which is why Starmer has totally fucked up today.

There isn't much of a reputation left to lose after 13 years of Tory, the UN has already condemned the illegal migration bill
