How bothered are you about Small Boats?

1000 replies

Spinet · 14/09/2023 11:19

I think the idea that people think Small Boats with illegal immigrants on them is a really pressing issue is made up by politicians to have something to campaign on. Am I right? Is this a pressing issue as far as you're concerned?

I'm not really talking about immigration/ asylum seekers in general, just the small boats everyone keeps mentioning. If you're worried about people dying in the channel I get that, but do you think people finding their way here illegally is a major issue for our country at the moment?

I think it's clear I don't but I will accept I'm wrong about this being a made up issue if the majority disagree with me.

If you want to vote YABU= this is one of my top ten concerns. YANBU = I don't think it's a top ten issue for the country.

So a 100k more than the empty house list and that’s BEFORE we have even got to Starms open border policy.

Starmer is proposing a returns deal with the EU, not open borders.

Legale · 14/09/2023 20:40

@Lastchancechica Going from the awareness shown in your previous posts, I'll take your assessment of me in line with those.

Lastchancechica · 14/09/2023 20:40

IClaudine · 14/09/2023 20:35

Yeah, maybe if I was a better person I would do that. The point is we cannot and should not have to rely on individuals to provide homes and support for refugees. There has to be action from central government. That is why we pay taxes.

Edited

And this weird idea of ‘central government’ paying for everything so you don’t need to do anything is one of the reasons we are in this position.

There is no ‘central state’ like China nannying the whole country!

You contribute absolutely nothing to the migrants - and yet - incredibly you want unlimited amounts to arrive here paid for by someone else.

This post sums it up.

The point I'm trying to make is that I think it's unlikely based on past voting results going back at least 100 years. Not impossible, just unlikely. Labour didn't even win here in '97.

Just because Electoral Calculus have my constituency as >70% chance of a Labour victory doesn't mean it will happen.

So much like North Shropshire then?

@Lastchancechica ...no. Why is everything such an hysterical response? I imagine incentives would be offered, and people would be entitled to take them, or not. I don't envisage anyone's home, second or not, being forcibly taken from them.
I'm not a fan of Labour, but do you really think the Tories are doing so well?

Interestingly the Tories have already taken steps in this direction, changing the council tax rules on empty properties in both 2013 and 2019, such that empty properties are now often subject to double or more council tax.

I've no idea how N Shropshire votes but that's not relevant to me as I don't live there.

It is obvious they are doing it as a vote winner.

But is it?

GuardiansPlayList · 14/09/2023 20:46

Very worried.

MsRosley · 14/09/2023 20:46

jgw1 · 14/09/2023 16:15

@MsRosley could you perhaps explain to those of us who don't know, what channels are available to an interpreter or doctor in Afganistan or Syria to apply to move to the UK?

The normal channels? If they're in a skills shortage area, I am sure their application would be treated more than fairly. But why wouldn't France need doctors or interpreters? Andy why wouldn't they be happy to work and live in France? Are you actually suggesting that the only reasonable and sensible course of action open to them is to get on a crowded dinghy setting off across the English Channel?

It certainly is a wierd idea that the government should look after the people in the country, much better have a free for all.

I haven't used the police for years, so I don't think I should have to pay for them, couldn't we just pay for them when we choose to use them?

Oh I think you will find the EU will not be signing up for many returns at all, they are not idiots. They have a major migrant problem on their hands with every country turning various shades of far right - and then they will have a weak British remainer PM desperate to rejoin the club, willing to lick the ample arses of the Brussels elite HE will be the perfect fall guy for this shit storm mark my words.

Revenge will be sweet for the EU, as they work this weakness to their advantage, and let’s face it Starm isn’t the brightest.

And you know that how?

Carer's allowance is taxable btw. And even non income tax payers pay tax. Ever heard of VAT?

Since the constituency was established in 1932 North Shropshire has always returned a Tory MP, in 1932 they did also return a Whig as the 2nd representative of the constituency. In 2021 there was a huge swing to the Lib Dems it what has always been a deeply conservative rural constituency.

It pains me that Starmer is so stupid he hasn’t clocked this and had now broadcast it everywhere! Basically advertising that we will be having even more migrants from thee EU.

It’s hopeless, the optics and makes him look like a dick.
