How bothered are you about Small Boats?

1000 replies

Spinet · 14/09/2023 11:19

I think the idea that people think Small Boats with illegal immigrants on them is a really pressing issue is made up by politicians to have something to campaign on. Am I right? Is this a pressing issue as far as you're concerned?

I'm not really talking about immigration/ asylum seekers in general, just the small boats everyone keeps mentioning. If you're worried about people dying in the channel I get that, but do you think people finding their way here illegally is a major issue for our country at the moment?

I think it's clear I don't but I will accept I'm wrong about this being a made up issue if the majority disagree with me.

If you want to vote YABU= this is one of my top ten concerns. YANBU = I don't think it's a top ten issue for the country.

When Labour win the next General Election won't we have seen a decline in the Far Right, given that we currently have a fairly Far Right government?

Now you are just embarrassing yourself. It’s barely conservative let alone far right!!

Greensleeves · 14/09/2023 21:11

HohiyiKozbevi · 14/09/2023 11:52

Asylum Seekers only get stuff for free because the law is that they aren't allowed to work so if they didn't get stuff for free they would be dead within a few days.

If there was an official asylum seeker status which once triggered allowed an asylum seeker to work and support themselves while the claim was being processed then we would have an instant solution. Many of them are highly qualified and experienced. Even those who are unskilled could be doing useful jobs.

The number of jobs isn't a limited resource. Jobs are created all the time in response to the dynamic factors of available workforce and opportunities so this would provide an overall boost to the economy benefitting everyone. Not doing this is a deliberate political choice in order to have a category of people that can be demonised.

YES!

So when you said that migrants from Afganistan or Syria could apply for Tier 2 skilled workers visa through the normal channels you were not aware that those channels are not available to someone who lives in Afganistan or Syria.

Are you perhaps also unaware that asylum seekers have an absolute right in UK and international law to apply for asylum in the UK no matter how they arrive here, and no matter which if any other countries they have travelled through to get here.

https://levinslaw.co.uk/dinghies-in-the-channel-illegal-entrants-and-immigration-offences/

Jgw, why are you trying to bedazzle me with your superior insight into British immigration policy and not actually answering any of the points I've been making on this thread? It isn't relevant whether or not people have the right to seek asylum here, or how they do it. My original beef was with posters pretending that people were getting into dangerous sea craft because their lives were in imminent danger, while conveniently ignoring the fast that those boats set off from France, not Afghanistan or Syria.

No matter how you spin it, choosing to gamble your life and your family's lives on a dangerous sea crossing is a bizarre choice to make when France is a perfectly safe and decent country. These people are being exploited by traffickers, and people like you are trying to pretend that they have no other choices open to them. Slow hand clap for your 'moral superiority'.

jgw1 · 14/09/2023 21:12

Lastchancechica · 14/09/2023 21:09

No, it’s just by nature a conservative country. Most people do not want uncontrolled immigration. It’s amazing that you still don’t seem to understand that, which is why Starmer has totally fucked up today.

Edited

Which makes it all the more remarkable that a constituency that had returned a Tory MP for all of its 180 year existence did not last time they were asked.

Could you provide a link to where Starmer said that Labour party policy was uncontrolled migration? Strangely I don't seem to be able to find one.

Lastchancechica · 14/09/2023 21:11

Now you are just embarrassing yourself. It’s barely conservative let alone far right!!

You've said that several times on this thread. For example when you said that children couldn't go to the GPs without their parents, which is demonstrably wrong.

The current government has senior ministers who think that women should not be educated, because education stops them having as many children.

sparklefresh · 14/09/2023 11:35

YANBU. It's a witch hunt dreamt up by the Tories to give the masses an enemy and distract them from the government's many, many failings.

This

Gillstuck · 14/09/2023 11:53

It's not the boats but the desperate people in them that I give a damn about.

And this too

@MsRosley Twice on this thread you have posted words to the effect that workers from Afganistan and Syria should apply for Tier 2 visas via the normal channels without realising that such channels do not exist.

Goldenbear · 14/09/2023 21:21

Bumpitybumper · 14/09/2023 12:44

@Goldenbear
"Left leaning'? Mumsnet is certainly not that anymore which is a real shame!
'Left leaning' does not mean totally left wing nor does it mean that there are no right wing posters here. From what I observe though, the majority of posters have more sympathy with the left than the right on most issues.

I do understand what 'left leaning' means and I repeat- it is certainly not left leaning anymore!

God, you're boring. Your inability to address my actual point is duly noted.

Leftsthatway · 14/09/2023 21:23

@Lastchancechica bravo for handing the lefties arses to them on a plate. Your relentless and coherent reasoning has knocked them for 6. They aren't used to this. As for saying Mnet is right wing lol. I see the poster who only pops up to call dissenting posters, racist, has gone very quiet. Eh @ilovesooty . Never extends beyond that little accusation.

It means anyone like for example Kenneth Clarke and John Major who are to the left of the current government.

Legale · 14/09/2023 21:26

@Leftsthatway I wouldn't call those posts reasoning, and I don't think anyone's arse has been handed to them. Even without considering the fact that many more difficult to handle points were ignored.
Apologies if your post is meant to be ironic, I feel it might be but hard to tell in text.
Also, branding everyone who disagrees with you a "lefty" is, in addition to being a very tired trope, incorrect.

Are you including in that the post where it was stated that it was illegal for children to see a doctor without their parents?

What is it you think is nonsense?

Numbers will go up

You won’t be able to cap it or get rid of traffickers

Which part is nonsensical in your view

And I don’t think there was an answer but do you have an upper number where boats arriving do cause you concern?

Stupid has been strong on this thread.

A whole series of posts were spent demonstrating with links that it was possible to sit SELTS in Afganistan and Syria when the company whose website was linked doesn't have test centres in those countries.

It was in the drop down list blame them for poor UX 🤷‍♂️

I found your boat log sojourn equally amusing

Doesn’t it stay with the boat? Maybe you’re on a boat

Spinet · 14/09/2023 21:34

I do not have a number of small boats that concerns me, no @EasternStandard. No I don't. Because the small boats themselves are a red herring - it's the people in them that are the issue and there are better ways to help them than 'stopping the boats'.

If you don't think what @Leftsthatway and @Lastchancechica have been posting is nonsense you have not been reading it.

May I be as bold as to suggest that saying that one has to show a passport when travelling to the UK from another country is a good example of nonsense as there are plenty of occassions when it does not happen?

Clavinova · 14/09/2023 21:36

Why does someone need 12 homes and think they should pay a smaller proportion of their income in tax than teachers and nurses?
What kind of morals does such a person have?

Who owns 12 homes?

Totally false rumour that Rishi Sunak owns 12 homes - spread by a Labour councillor who can't read. The Sunaks own 4 homes - their Yorkshire property is set on a 12-acre plot of land - that's where the Labour councillor twit got the figure 12 from. Only 3 of the properties are in the UK - London home, constituency home and London flat used by visiting relatives.

How many Labour MPs have offered up their constituency home to house a homeless family? How much did Keir Starmer sell his 7-acre plot of land for last year? Does he plan to raise capital gains tax for everyone else after paying a lower rate himself? Crafty.
