How bothered are you about Small Boats?

1000 replies

Spinet · 14/09/2023 11:19

I think the idea that people think Small Boats with illegal immigrants on them is a really pressing issue is made up by politicians to have something to campaign on. Am I right? Is this a pressing issue as far as you're concerned?

I'm not really talking about immigration/ asylum seekers in general, just the small boats everyone keeps mentioning. If you're worried about people dying in the channel I get that, but do you think people finding their way here illegally is a major issue for our country at the moment?

I think it's clear I don't but I will accept I'm wrong about this being a made up issue if the majority disagree with me.

If you want to vote YABU= this is one of my top ten concerns. YANBU = I don't think it's a top ten issue for the country.

Ah I see, you imagine if all empty second homes forced into the rental market then everyone would be living in a utopia 😂

There would certainly be a big reduction in the number of people without homes. Do you think that would be a bad thing?

BloodyHellKen · 14/09/2023 15:37

jgw1 · 14/09/2023 15:33

@BloodyHellKen you would rather see homes sit empty, whilst other people do not have a home to live in?

Yes, if the alternative is compulsory purchase of peoples property.

I own about 10 pairs of shoes. I don't expect to be told I have to give most of them to homeless people because some people don't have shoes.

It's the same principal and it is a slippery slope.

I agree in limiting foreign purchasers like they do in New Zealand but if you live here, work, pay tax etc your property is your property.

This is not a cuddly Blair type party.
Labour are now entrenched and indebted to just stop the oil activists, trans activists and eco warriors, the hard left and the unions we are in real trouble if they get in.

Current incarnation of the Labour Party is hard left? Perhaps if you are ultra hard right you might think so, but otherwise🤣🤣🤣

But go on spreading propaganda if it makes you happy.

Are you going to tell us about the eye watering woke agenda then?

Have you missed the last 18 pages? Okay , well if you are struggling you can read my last few posts that encapsulate it nicely 😎

jgw1 · 14/09/2023 15:25

@Bumpitybumper can people born in Southampton not be economic migrants?

Of course, but as we are talking about economic migration into the UK then it's hardly relevant that the PM lived for a short period of time in America. I don't really know what point you're trying to make? There are clear arguments for having some economic migrants in the country and there are processes in place to facilitate this. The issue if small boats and asylum seekers isn't necessarily related to the vast majority of economic migrants.

I'm not convinced there would be a big reduction in the number of people without homes. Most second homes are run as businesses and don't lie empty. It's the blocks of flats in cities that are bought by foreign investment companies that lie empty IME.

I don't think you need to worry @Lastchancechica The polls are quite clear as to what the outcome of a general election held anytime soon would be.

So this is your idea of Labour lite? Jesus we are in trouble. Raynor is a well known corbynite and she is the deputy! A very loud one at that.

A lot of people are very worried about it and would cast their vote based on a political party's response to it. I've learned not to assume that most people are caring and kind because recent voting patterns have taught me how petty, selfish and small minded many people actually are. It's also clearly a vote winner given the level of political support it has - and significant lack of political challenge! Also I meet a lot of people from all walks of life due to living in a tourist area and it is clear that the majority of Brits, if they feel comfortable enough to express their views, are hostile to immigrants and helping them out - whatever hardships they have endured to have resulted in that migration.

Don't allow yourself to be tricked into thinking that your bubble of like minded compassionate friends and colleagues are the majority.

It is a pretty simple and I thought undisputable point, that both I and the Prime Minister have been economic migrants. Now it might be that you are perfectly fine with economic migration and therefore you do not mind at all. There are though some posters on this thread who are aghast at the idea of economic migration and want it banned.

That is utter rubbish. That is exactly what Labour are looking at.

Well the only source you posted was Scotland where housing is devolved and the policy is absolutely not as you were describing. Please post your sources for this policy in England and Wales so that we can have a look at the detail.

Also, psst: Scottish Labour are unlikely to get in, so right now that policy is unlikely to come to pass.

Each year there are more asylum applications in France than the UK...

That seems sensible - France has over 3 million 'empty homes' - we only have 700,000.

Fortunately we have an opinion poll from last month which explains how voters think the government is doing with this policy area.

Electoral Calculus have my constituency as >70% chance of a Labour victory based on Labours 24% share of the votes and Tory 50% share in the last GE.

This constituency has been Tory for ever so I'm not sure I have much faith in their figures TBH.
