How bothered are you about Small Boats?

1000 replies

Spinet · 14/09/2023 11:19

I think the idea that people think Small Boats with illegal immigrants on them is a really pressing issue is made up by politicians to have something to campaign on. Am I right? Is this a pressing issue as far as you're concerned?

I'm not really talking about immigration/ asylum seekers in general, just the small boats everyone keeps mentioning. If you're worried about people dying in the channel I get that, but do you think people finding their way here illegally is a major issue for our country at the moment?

I think it's clear I don't but I will accept I'm wrong about this being a made up issue if the majority disagree with me.

If you want to vote YABU= this is one of my top ten concerns. YANBU = I don't think it's a top ten issue for the country.

True. Just pointing out however, that current Sunak/ Tory/ right wing press strategy is to blame everything on Starmer and Labour. When they haven't been in power for the last 13 years. Saying that Labour's future plans for everything will ruin the economy, won't " stop the boats" and all the other shit they come out with, is a bit lame really.

The Tories are finished. Doesn't matter how much scaremongering is vomited on social media between now and the GE. The right wing's days are numbered. Tick tock.

Have you missed the last 18 pages? Okay , well if you are struggling you can read my last few posts that encapsulate it nicely 😎

You didn't tell us before what the eye watering woke agenda was and you're not providing proven evidence of one now.

Electoral Calculus have my constituency as >70% chance of a Labour victory based on Labours 24% share of the votes and Tory 50% share in the last GE.

This constituency has been Tory for ever so I'm not sure I have much faith in their figures TBH.

An excellent illustration of how much the political landscape has changed since the last general election, see also, the North Shropshire, Somerton and Frome and Selby and Aintsy by-elections for more evidence of this.

I work with asylum seekers.

Some are highly qualified eg doctors, dentists, social workers, engineers. They all want to work. But they are forced to wait. For years.

They can be moved with very little notice. If they have their children with them- once their child turns 18 they are removed mikes away from their families. It is cruel. And unnecessary.
They get a call saying a taxi is coming for you this afternoon we are moving you as you are now 18.

Their stories are horrific. And the government are focussing on the wrong thing. Should be processed faster and allowed to work.

This is horrible. 😭
And I agree with you entirely. Some of these are highly qualified people it's such a shit system

It is a pretty simple and I thought undisputable point, that both I and the Prime Minister have been economic migrants. Now it might be that you are perfectly fine with economic migration and therefore you do not mind at all. There are though some posters on this thread who are aghast at the idea of economic migration and want it banned.

Find me one post on this thread that suggests that economic migration should be banned. I challenge you!

Posters have suggested that economic migrants shouldn't be able to use small boats to gain access to the UK but that is not the same as wanting a blanket ban on economic migration.

Op has gone a bit quiet. Not the answer she imagined would be forthcoming, unthinkable from the Islington echo chamber.

We are all supposed to shut up, “be kind”, stop calling ourselves women and lay out the royal red carpet for the latest gangster running his people smuggling/drugs/guns racket. Such a lovely man. Always makes time for the kids.
Borders, who needs borders when we have millions arriving to clean the house, and ‘wipe my bum’ and work on the farms! Anyone for an organic herbal tea?

What’s scaremongering out of interest

The increase in movement of people? I’d say that’s a given

I doubt we’ll buck the overall trend for right wing increase as communities get strained. Hence increase in EU atm

Starmer can promise to ‘smash the gangs’. It’ll be interesting to see how that goes

Why does it matter how an economic migrant gets to the UK?

Do people really think that the number of economic migrants crossing the Channel in small boats is a problem? Last year was the biggest number on record, that number would not fill the UKs largest village.

How does a doctor in Afganistan or Syria complete the SELT that is required before they apply for a visa to the UK?

No idea but a student of mine applied from a camp in Syria after his home was blown up and his Mum, Dad and siblings all killed. He was injured badly. His uncle who is a doctor applied to bring him, his wife 2 DD's and his nephew, who was my student. All could speak perfect English and his Uncle had already spent about 8 or 9 years living in UK at medical school before going back home to Syria getting married and starting his family. My student went to the school I worked in, an independent school for 2 years before I left. Even then the grandparents stayed in Syria. My student told me his grandparents gave his Uncle almost every penny they had to help him set up in UK and bring him too. They had to have enough points and pay to come.

What wasn't the answer I was expecting? that 60% of the people I asked would agree with me? You have been very vocal over the last few pages but actually not many people are supporting what you were saying.

There are many people who have disagreed with me - and each other - who haven't resorted to goading right-wing epithets like you've spouted. That divisive language is one example of why I hate ridiculous tropes like the Small Boats thing. It means nothing. NOTHING. Islington echochamber. Woke agenda. Polly wants a cracker.

@FreshStart12345 They might have a good work ethic but that doesn't mean they are not economic migrants and not the assylum seekers they are claiming to be.

I'm not bothered if they are economic migrants. My dad was an economic migrant (Ireland). My maternal great-grandparents were economic migrants (Sweden), my grandfather-in- law (Poland) and my grandmother-in-law (Belgium) were economic migrants (well, maybe not the grandfather escaping nazis tbf).
I bet you will find in most families there are migrants along the family tree.

I'm just so grateful that I was lucky to born in a good country, with good work opportunities, no war, no suppression of my human rights especially based on my gender. Like wtf did I do to be born here, in the UK? I didn't choose it. I got lucky. Whether the migrants are fleeing persecution or just looking for better work and money, they never chose to be born In Afghanistan or Eritrea or Albania, they just did not get lucky. We have a human responsibility for to help them each other

Who is Polly? A Labour spokesperson. Resorting to parrots 🦜
I have no idea what you are talking about.
If you had been on here for as long as I have, you would know MN is very very left wing. To get a reaction like this, speaks volumes about the subject.
