AIBU to have sat on her feet

Tongue in cheek really, I feel perfectly reasonable. OH thinks I'm getting old, intolerant, and grumpy.

Got on the bus today with shopping bags in tow, they're heavy and I'm knackered (I have a disability that causes chronic exhaustion, but it's invisible). It's heaving busy in town/on bus, so I head to the back of the bus so we can fit some bags on our lap/feet out of people's way/the aisle.

One corner of the back seats is taken. The other corner has one, older teenage girl, taking up 4 seats with herself taking one seat, her handbag taking another, and her feet on the 2 seats in front of her, burying her head in her phone as if she can't see us. Didn't move her handbag or feet from the two seats, despite my obviously being right in front of her, so I just gave up and sat on her feet.

She removed them sharpish, probably because I'm quite fat.

Probably not helped by the inward trip earlier today, where having dodged one teenager's leg placed right into the aisle, I tripped over the next one's leg in aisle and went flying.

I couldn't be arsed asking her to move, because I was about 6 inches in front of her, my OH had sat in the seat next to her handbag, so there's no way she couldn't have known we were there (no headphones, either) so I thought, if you're going to pretend I'm not there, I'm going to pretend you're not. But ffs, I sat on a teenager. ON PURPOSE. Not a high point in my life.

Yanbu, and you're also hilarious! Serves the teenager right, putting their manky feet on the seats. 🤮

HRTQueen · 12/09/2023 10:05

😆😆

well it’s a story to tell her friends who will all think this so so I fair

I once asked no actually I told a man to put his feet down and change seats. I’m not always so upfront but I was so irritated by him. He apologised and obliged

HRTQueen · 12/09/2023 10:05

*unfair

DinoMummsy · 12/09/2023 10:05

The lady who sat on the two men too - just brilliant! 🤣

Its rude that she had her feet on the seat but you will never know if she would have moved them and apologise if you had just said ‘hey can you move your feet.’ Was she 19 or 13? You can’t assume she was ignoring you just because she didn’t look at you. How do you know she doesn’t also have a hidden disability that makes it hard to quickly perceive disgruntled adults heading towards her. Doubt you would have done the same to an adult man. Best case scenario a rude person sat on another rude person except one was an adult and should have known better.

Oh please. She shouldn't have had her feet on the seats in the first place. 🙄

thecatsthecats · 12/09/2023 10:11

If someone isn't able to move their bags, I kindly help them with that.

Not sure I'd sit on feet though -maybe she has an invisible disability where raised feet feel better? ;)

StressBless · 12/09/2023 10:15

Two wrongs don’t make a right, she has the wrong bus etiquette but then so did you. Not the end of the world though, and not sure I’d want to sit on someone else’s feet / shoes to make a point 🤢

FOJN · 12/09/2023 10:18

..so I thought, if you're going to pretend I'm not there, I'm going to pretend you're not.

I love this. So many people are quick to make excuses for other people's thoughtless behaviour when in reality most of them are just selfish and entitled. Good for you.

queenMab99 · 12/09/2023 10:27

I do similar to my dog! If he is sitting in my chair, or on the settee where I want to be, as he likes to do, he ignores any commands to get down and actively refuses to move if I pull at him, so I just pretend he isn't there and lower my bum to the seat! He shoots off my chair like a rocket! He is quite obedient in most ways, so I forgive him this foible.
It worked for you she moved her feet, so you won.

Pinkyhere · 12/09/2023 10:32

Fellow grump here. I salute you.

FunnysInLaJardin · 12/09/2023 10:33

well done @Toenailz , excellent work.

The teens on the bus who really irritate me are the ones who don't stand in the queue like everyone else, but sit waiting for the bus and then push to the front when the bus arrives.

I always want to say join the queue you cheeky sods, but cant be bothered with the mouth full of abuse, so don't. I just scowl at them instead

I drive and still get the bus. In some places buses are easier than driving.

Checkcurtains · 12/09/2023 10:39

She was rude but you assaulted her so you really can't take the moral high ground here OP

How hard is it to ask someone to move? Seriously

FTB2023 · 12/09/2023 10:39

Teen was in the wrong for taking up 4 seats and having her feet on the seats.
You were justifiably annoyed and had every right to take action.
But you know you were being unreasonable for sitting on her feet rather than speaking to her first.
Unlike the majorityof pp, I don't think its particularly amusing nor would it make a thoughtless teenager think twice. I think it's more likely to reinforce the idea that everyone acts in their own self interests so why shouldn't she.
"Do as I say, not as I do" is rarely an effective approach

But then again, if you ask her politely the message: is nobody will challenge me. I can be rude and have no repercussions.

Op was slightly unreasonable but I do think that girl learned something! Next time you put your feet up, someone might just take the free seat whether you're there or not.

You can't use 'hidden disabilities' for an excuse for self-centeredness and rudeness. So many people yell 'but hidden disabilities!!!!' as the first port of call these days when, the majority of the time, people are just bloody rude and self absorbed.

InvisibleDuck · 12/09/2023 10:46

I thought the story was going to be that you'd asked her to move her feet and she refused. As you didn't ask, YABU. Any time I've asked someone to move their feet or bags off a seat on public transport so I could sit down, they've done it. Often they don't do it until asked, even if I think it's obvious I want to sit.

Putting feet on seats at all is a nasty habit so I'm not saying the teenager is an angel, but use your words, OP!

FTB2023 · 12/09/2023 10:46

"But then again, if you ask her politely the message: is nobody will challenge me. I can be rude and have no repercussions"
Speaking to her would have been challenging the behaviour.
I wasn't suggesting OP grovel and apologise for asking!

If there was, maybe it would be called plates levitatus

This.

We all get on buses and trains and find bags and sometimes feet where people want to sit.

Asking /telling them to move so you can sit down tends to work.

Is this the same hidden disability that means her bag, her feet and her entitled arse all need their own seat? Can she claim PIP for it?

I was in a busy carpark last Friday with cars queueing and hunting for shoppers leaving so they could take the vacated space. I came on a space but there was a woman in the way. I stopped reversing and wound down my window. Woman shook her head and said "My friend is just coming to park"
I suppose I could have carried on reversing - it would have been a gentle bump and she'd have learnt not to be a CF again.
But I didn't. I challenged her and told her that's not how car parks work and would she please move. She considered arguing but decided to move and I parked my car.
