Is your house always locked?

A previous thread got me thinking. Our house doors are never locked during the day because of the steady stream of comings and goings and no one being able to keep a key. We do lock them at night when we are in bed but will frequently leave them unlocked until a child gets home after we have gone down.

Is this unreasonable? Are your doors always locked?

Yes

Theoldcuriosityshop · 11/09/2023 20:22

Yes

DisforDarkChocolate · 11/09/2023 20:22

Nope, once we're up they're unlocked. And no, it doesn't invalidate my insurance.

ShutTheFrontDoor · 11/09/2023 20:22

Yes family of 6, so lots of comings and goings but we all lock the door either as we leave or after we come in, whoever else is at home.
We all have our own key.
low crime area as-well but I prefer to feel safe.

giddy90 · 11/09/2023 20:22

No, we actually left the house and accidentally left the door open not just unlocked. I am fortunate as I have very good neighbours lol.

AlltheFs · 11/09/2023 20:23

It depends where you live. We are in a sleepy small village at the end of a dead end lane.

Ours is locked because we have a 3 year old to keep in. But everyone elses are unlocked.

DisquietintheRanks · 11/09/2023 20:24

Mu mum's doors are always locked but then she's and elderly woman who lives alone. I live with my husband and two teenage sons and the front door is only ever locked at night or by me if I'm in the house alone, or in the back garden, or by my husband if he's on the drum kit.

Doggymummar · 11/09/2023 20:24

No, never I go round and open all doors and windows as soon as I get up. We live in a very safe place though. Went to Waitrose earlier and left the back of the house open as oh had gone out without keys.

Ilovenicnacs · 11/09/2023 20:24

My door just locks anyway when you close it. Then I double lock two locks when I leave. I live in London and my neighbours have been burgled.

Zanatdy · 11/09/2023 20:25

Absolutely, I follow a lot of true crime. It takes 5 seconds to lock my door as I come in, I’d not even consider not locking my door.

ApolloandDaphne · 11/09/2023 20:26

We don't use our front door but our back door is rarely shut never mind locked. We only lock it when we go to bed. We live fairly rurally though and no one can walk past our house. If anyone comes up the drive our dog will bark to let us know.

StoneWitch · 11/09/2023 20:27

Always locked.

DappledThings · 11/09/2023 20:28

No. Sometimes remember to lock the front door if I'm going to be out on the back garden for a while.

I couldn't find my keys the other day and was running late so took the children on the school run and just left the door unlocked till I got back.

Always remember to lock it before going to bed but never before then. I have accidentally left the car unlocked twice in the last fortnight though.

jellycat · 11/09/2023 20:28

We have a Yale lock and a mortice lock on our front door so during the day if we’re in it’s locked with the Yale lock only.

FizzyFucker · 11/09/2023 20:28

I rarely lock my doors, I live rurally and don't even bother to lock the doors at night. I'll lock them if I go away on holiday, but it usually takes me a while to find my keys!

Allywill · 11/09/2023 20:29

we have split spindle handles on outside doors so they can’t be opened from the outside without a key so actually we rarely lock them.

Frozenone · 11/09/2023 20:30

Always locked.

Years ago I had a flat mate who liked to leave doors unlocked and/or wide open. I got out of the shower one morning and opened the bathroom door to find a man standing at the open front door, one foot over the threshold in the process of entering the house. I had the shock of my life, yelled who are you and he bolted. Flatmate got a right telling off from her boyfriend about leaving doors open and unlocked.

Magnalux · 11/09/2023 20:30

we lock it at night and unlock it first thing to let the dog out, it’s never locked in between those times, unless we’re at all at work/school, but we live in a very quiet rural area

Lavender14 · 11/09/2023 20:30

Yep always locked. People are more likely to try the door to chance for car keys than rob you and I like my car. I also had a very drunk man walk into a previous house. He left eventually but it's always easier to keep someone out than get them out when they're already in.

OhDoh · 11/09/2023 20:31

always locked.. unless I am in the room with the door open.

girljulian · 11/09/2023 20:31

I lock mine all the time but only because I’m married to an American who grew up in Albuquerque. My parents don’t keep theirs locked during the day if they’re in, and I wouldn’t either in the village I live in. If upstairs in the shower or something then yes.

CatsOnTheChair · 11/09/2023 20:31

Front - always. It locks when you shut it - you don't need a key to leave, but you do need a key to enter.

Back door and bifolds - often open, but behind a bolted gate that would be fairly easy to jump if someone really wanted to get in.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 11/09/2023 20:31

Yes. As are things like the garage, shed and side and rear gates.

Furrydogmum · 11/09/2023 20:32

We try to keep ours locked as our setter can open it!

emotionalpuddle · 11/09/2023 20:33

My doors are always locked, if the patio doors are open I have to make sure the lock is on my gate and again they're locked when I go upstairs. I'm very security conscious as a woman living alone though. I'll often check my cameras before opening the door if I'm not expecting anyone.
