Is your house always locked?

A previous thread got me thinking. Our house doors are never locked during the day because of the steady stream of comings and goings and no one being able to keep a key. We do lock them at night when we are in bed but will frequently leave them unlocked until a child gets home after we have gone down.

Is this unreasonable? Are your doors always locked?

Our front door has a split pin, so even when unlocked it can’t be opened from the outside without a key. I’d feel too vulnerable having a front door that anyone could open if they felt like it.

BooksAndHooks · 11/09/2023 21:36

No, back door is always open when we are home. We have no rear access though.

Front door only locked when out or at night. You can’t open it once it’s shut from the outside though.

letstrythatagain · 11/09/2023 21:38

No. We leave the from door open for most of the day (when we are at home) so the dog can wander in and out.

Poshjock · 11/09/2023 21:39

Always. I have personally been in the house on 3 occasions when someone has tried the door (going back years mind you). I am aware of many walk in burglaries and there was a spate of walk ins that were all the same chap. He was prolific in our area for a while.

Recently my community FB page is full of Ring footage of 2 people that are trying car doors. 3 houses in my street including NDN so I have to assume that all my cars were tried too.

rainbowsparkle28 · 11/09/2023 21:39

Always locked. But I live by myself in a ground floor flat (with own front door) so just feel more comfortable that way that someone isn't just able to walk in (not that ever had any actual incidents to suggest this would happen). At my parents though if house sitting etc. then will have front door locked during day again so can't walk in off the pavement but back door into enclosed garden always open if okay weather and then just locked up when going to bed. Windows open if okay weather at either place to let air flow.

eatsleepfarmrepeat · 11/09/2023 21:40

Live on a farm, doors are unlocked most of the time and at this time of year, wide open. Postie will quite often open the door to pop things in, the dogs and children are in and out as they please.

I lock the two doors we infrequently use but it isn’t uncommon for us to forget to lock the kitchen door. We’ve got three working dogs in the kitchen, if anyone was intent on indulging in some true crime up here, I would know about it with half a mile to spare.

I cannot imagine living a life where I have to lock a door to feel safe 🧡

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 11/09/2023 21:40

Yes. But I have small children who can open doors and I'm worried about them breaking out!

Shinyandnew1 · 11/09/2023 21:41

My front door locks as it closes, so unless it’s actually open, it’s locked.

Dymaxion · 11/09/2023 21:42

And anyone pinching my car would be doing me a favour, that noise is normal and nothing to be worried about too much and yes that is its rather disappointing top speed and no it doesn't corner very well ! The worst getaway car ever, unless you want to shift a load of stuff slowly Wink

kikisparks · 11/09/2023 21:42

We have smart locks so pretty much always locked.

fetchacloth · 11/09/2023 21:42

Yes without fail. I live alone so this is critical for me.

MyPurpleHeart · 11/09/2023 21:43

Only when my husband is home. Even during the day when it's just me and the baby the doors are locked behind me

DinnaeFashYersel · 11/09/2023 21:43

Locked when we go to bed or leave the house.

Otherwise unlocked.

AdviceNeededForMe · 11/09/2023 21:44

Always locked

icebearforpresident · 11/09/2023 21:46

Most of the time yes, no Yale locks but I usually lock the door behind me when I come home unless I know husband is due in shortly after me. No real concerns re crime, although you do hear about the odd opportunist chancer at someone’s door, but we started when the kids were young so they wouldn’t run out the door and into the busy A road we lived alongside. Kids are now practically teenagers and we’ve moved to a quiet street but we’re in the habit.

The back door will be left open )if we are home) but our garden is landlocked, as are the gardens surrounding ours. Anyone who wants to break into my house coming through the back has to break into a neighbours first.

I know for a fact though that my neighbour, older woman who lives on her own, has both front and back doors unlocked 24/7, even if she’s not home.

Sugarcoatt · 11/09/2023 21:46

Someone climbed into my neighbours back garden, walked in the unlocked back door, took the car keys and nicked the car. Fairly safe middle class area too. So now my doors are locked.

Nopenopenopenopenopenope · 11/09/2023 21:46

Usually leave the back door open if I'm awake. Occasionally leave it unlocked if I'm only going out for 10 minutes and can't find my keys. If I'm going for a bike ride without a bag I will very often will lock up and hide my key in an outbuilding because it's full of assorted and largely not worth stealing shit so nobody's going to find it.

CustardySergeant · 11/09/2023 21:49

Always locked.

Redlarge · 11/09/2023 21:49

Hardly ever. I dont live rural. I live in a community thats close knit and whilst not perfect very low burglary and crime. Very safe. Inner city.

WolfFoxHare · 11/09/2023 21:50

Our front door locks itself automatically. It is a bit of a pain if DS is playing out as we keep having to get up to let him in but I do prefer it really. When I was living at home, we only locked up when the last of us went to bed, and one evening someone walked in and took a set of car keys on the console table in the hall, and stole my mum’s car. After that, we always kept the front door locked.

In fact summer time its mostly not unlocked but open as are most in the street.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 11/09/2023 21:53

Nope, don't lock them at night either. My bedroom is right next to the front door, I wake if it opens, it's noisy.

I've decided I'm more worried about being sure we can get out in a fire without DP having put the key in a pocket in a laundry basket (he seems to be allergic to hooks) than I am about someone 'breaking' in. We're on a dead end road that's very quiet. And the neighbour literally sits outside staring at my house all day as a one man neighbourhood watch - he puts me off going in, never mind a burglar!

We've only got a chub lock, no yale. I'm surprised at people thinking most people have yale locks, surely most people have plastic double glazed doors with key locks these days?

Where we used to live until about 5 years ago was 3 houses not visible from the road. I used to leave both the doors wide open all day if it was dry weather and keys in the cars. Never had a problem.

I'd absolutely hate to live somewhere that I felt I had to lock the door as soon as I got home and not even feel able to have the garden door open while I potter about indoors. If I felt that was necessary I'd not feel safe even with the doors locked I don't think.

Cardboardcup · 11/09/2023 21:58

Not actually locked when we are home no but you can’t open the front door from outside without a key. At night all the doors are locked, that includes the internal doors downstairs.

UsingChangeofName · 11/09/2023 21:58

Always. I am surprised how many don't.

UnctuousUnicorns · 11/09/2023 22:00

Only overnight. During the day it's unlocked, and if the weather is warm we leave it (and all the windows) open to get fresh air into the house. Our regular postman often just leaves parcels on the doormat inside the hallway. No cameras or anything. Suburban NE Glasgow, lived here 23 years.
