Is your house always locked?

A previous thread got me thinking. Our house doors are never locked during the day because of the steady stream of comings and goings and no one being able to keep a key. We do lock them at night when we are in bed but will frequently leave them unlocked until a child gets home after we have gone down.

Is this unreasonable? Are your doors always locked?

Unlocked in day, locked at night

flumposie · 11/09/2023 20:34

Yes. Last year we had a notorious, aggressive drug dealer living opposite us.Comings and goings all hours. I witnessed domestic abuse and when the police officer came to take my statement he commented that all the neighbours locked their doors when he visited each house. Drug dealer has moved on but I still lock my door.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/09/2023 20:35

Yes. I paid extra to have a door that locks automatically. My parents have a key. But would never dream of coming unannounced. And I wouldn't dream of doing it to them either.

GrouchyKiwi · 11/09/2023 20:35

Only at night. Front door is often locked, actually, unless we open it for a delivery or visitor, but side door and back door are always unlocked. Anyone coming to our house has to come through one of two noisy gates, and we have a Dog Warning System.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 11/09/2023 20:36

Only the front door which locks as it shuts. Yale lock.
Other doors opened wide at the back of the house during the day in warm weather. Doors to back garden unlocked in the cooler weather and left unlocked after going out first thing to feed the birds.

ANutAsBigAsABoulder · 11/09/2023 20:37

Always. Front whether we are in or out. Back locked when out or upstairs. Side gate also locked. Lived in London for years so an ongoing habit. Would rather make it harder for opportunists.

FOJN · 11/09/2023 20:37

Front door is always locked. Back door or patios doors maybe open all day when I'm at home but the garden gate is bolted and my dog would alert me to anyone approaching the house.

I lock mine all the time but only because I’m married to an American who grew up in Albuquerque. My parents don’t keep theirs locked during the day if they’re in, and I wouldn’t either in the village I live in. If upstairs in the shower or something then yes.

Is Albuquerque considered a high crime area?

I'm in New York, in the exurbs about 50 miles north of the city, and we lock our house at night or if there's no one home.

gogomoto · 11/09/2023 20:39

Yes. Wouldn't feel safe otherwise. I've had someone walk in before, uninvited!

Talltall · 11/09/2023 20:39

@momtoboys

locked or a motion sensor alarm pointed at it.
or open windows

alarm monitored when out and set at night too!

Very small cameras (no one sees them) on all external sides

GemmaFoster · 11/09/2023 20:39

I lock up at night. But always open in the day, when I’m at home. Often leave the house during the day for short trips & leave unlocked. Very safe on a small private drive with 7 houses though, so my front door is not on the street side. I think I should be more careful though having read this thread.

PinkRoses1245 · 11/09/2023 20:40

No, not if we’re in and it’s during the day.

SophiaElise · 11/09/2023 20:41

My front door locks as soon as it's shut. It's one of those fire compliant locks that doesn't need a key to open it from the inside but needs one from the outside.

Door to back garden: usually open if there's someone in the house. Locked at night.

PurBal · 11/09/2023 20:41

No. Sometimes I don’t lock them when we go out.

I think it’s mad people have this level of surveillance within their home.

Londontown12 · 11/09/2023 20:43

Always locked everytime anyone comes in or out ! Too many opportunists out there !! We have heard the handle being pushed down so people do try ! Caught someone on camera trying my car door as well !

AndIKnewYouMeantIt · 11/09/2023 20:44

Not when I'm in and awake. Pisses me right off when I'm in the process of taking the recycling out and on load 2 I get to the back door to find DH has stealthed past the kitchen and locked it.

BorgQueen · 11/09/2023 20:44

I left my keys/car key in the outside of my front door from 9.00 till DH came home at 1pm 🙄
The front door is unlocked most days from 07.00 till 7/8pm unless we are out.
The back door is generally open all day every day when I’m home too.

Dippydinosaurus · 11/09/2023 20:45

Yes - we have young children so lock them in, a neighbours house was burgled (they left their door unlocked) and someone drunk walked into a friends house and wouldn't leave. Sounds funny but not when you're on your own

Chestnutz · 11/09/2023 20:45

Locked during the week when we’re WFH upstairs. Weekend when we’re out the front then unlocked but generally if we’re out the back then we lock. Semi-rural location but get a lot of passing footfall and we had an attempted break in a couple of years ago during the day while we were in the house - we’re in a nice area but definitely not the posh bit of the village .

diddl · 11/09/2023 20:47

If upstairs in the shower or something then yes.

What difference does that make?

Surely if it's safe then it's safe?

Thestruggler · 11/09/2023 20:49

Always lock all our doors when we are home. Day and night. More recently I have a metal bar that goes across the patio and kitchen doors and sash jammers on as well.
I am paranoid about security but this is because my year old child witnessed a horrific car jacking locally and then a few months later we had two attempted break ins within 24 hours, one of which was at 8 o'clock in the evening in winter and witnessed by DC and DH.

BLT2022 · 11/09/2023 20:49

I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if the doors weren't locked or a downstairs window was open!

CremeEggThief · 11/09/2023 20:49

Yes unless I'm deliberately airing the house or just outside the door for some reason.

It drives me FUCKING MENTAL when people moan and complain on our town Facebook page of opportunistic thieves trying their home and sometimes car doors. JUST LOCK THEM FFS, especially when you know for a fact you live in an area where there are lots of addicts about and high levels of petty crime! 👊😡🤣

JaiynDough · 11/09/2023 20:49

Do you people not have yale locks?

All front doors I've ever had have had yale locks that lock when you shut them.

Or do you mean double locking yourself in/out the house with the chubb lock?

I've only ever used the chubb lock at night or when going out.
