Is your house always locked?

A previous thread got me thinking. Our house doors are never locked during the day because of the steady stream of comings and goings and no one being able to keep a key. We do lock them at night when we are in bed but will frequently leave them unlocked until a child gets home after we have gone down.

Is this unreasonable? Are your doors always locked?

We have a Yale - thought that would be fairly standard so it's always "closed" locked. Would never double lock though because of potential need to escape fire.
Back doors locked at night - mainly not to invalidate insurance.

Oakbeam · 11/09/2023 20:51

No. Back and front door unlocked while we are in and up. Barring the odd oversight, locked overnight.

DappledThings · 11/09/2023 20:52

Do you people not have yale locks?
I don't. If door is actually locked you can open it from the outside. Still only lock it if out or asleep.

Oakbeam · 11/09/2023 20:53

Do you people not have yale locks?

No, deadlocks on all doors.

ToughFuss · 11/09/2023 20:54

Yes but only because my toddler son never wants anything else but to be out around on the farm and in the yard/sheds and it’s so unsafe to risk that. Before he was mobile, I never really locked my doors at all except at night and if we were going away/out for a long day.

Willmafrockfit · 11/09/2023 20:55

front door locked, needs a key to open from the outside
back door, not locked if i am home but back gate is

Upwiththelark76 · 11/09/2023 20:55

If im in the house doors are never locked. French doors always open for air as well.

Probably stupid but I only ever lock doors at night,

Willmafrockfit · 11/09/2023 20:56

we did have a front door for a while that you had to physically lock when you left but i found that risky - we live near to a bus stop and i can just imagine my teens at the time just closing the door without locking on their way out

MariePaperRoses · 11/09/2023 21:00

I have had a locked front door unless we are all away on holiday in around thirty years.

Ffsmakeitstop · 11/09/2023 21:00

Front doors always locked. Back door is unlocked if we're in but we have a 6 foot back gate that's always locked.
I've never understood why people are so careful to lock cars but leave their home unlocked.

MariePaperRoses · 11/09/2023 21:00

I haven't ^

Palindrone · 11/09/2023 21:02

Always. Why risk it?

User0311 · 11/09/2023 21:05

No I never lock the doors, drives my husband mad.

Spanne · 11/09/2023 21:06

Always locked. Wouldn’t want my dog to escape if someone tried the door.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 11/09/2023 21:07

Front door locked all the time. I don’t really use it, back unlocked and open as long as someone is in.

Aprilrosesews · 11/09/2023 21:08

Always. The easiest theft is someone walking in and taking your handbag/keys. This has happened to so many I know and we’ve had people try our door before.

Remagirl · 11/09/2023 21:08

Once we're up both doors are unlocked and open for the day. Sometimes forget to lock them at night too. We live in a safe rural area with a road that is hardly used. If I'm home alone at night I do lock it. Our dog sounds pretty scary, despite his love of strangers.

Onionsandplaydoh · 11/09/2023 21:10

Yup, Always.

QueenMegan · 11/09/2023 21:11

No.
If anyone came in the dogs would eat them.

tuvamoodyson · 11/09/2023 21:13

Yes.

AdoraBell · 11/09/2023 21:14

Yes 95% of time. Only not when we are sorting recycling and garden or DH washing the car.

MaybeanothertimeNotReally · 11/09/2023 21:15

My front and back doors are always locked. Also, you invalidate your insurance if you're burgled while your doors are unlocked.

Round where I live if you don't nail your Christmas wreath to the front door, it's gone.

Hummusanddipdip · 11/09/2023 21:15

The front door gets locked when we go to bed, but unless dh or I pop to the bin/shop/car (on a weekend) it can remain locked until well into the afternoon, however back door is unlocked as soon as we get downstairs and remains that way unless we go out as we let our dog out and he has free reign to come and go from the garden all day.

Weekdays we get home from work and the front door is unlocked until we go to bed. Backdoor is opened and left open until it gets dark and we turn lights on.

Sometimes PiL or parents pop over, they have keys, so if door is locked they will let themselves in, if unlocked they just walk in. We usually see them coming as we're either in the kitchen or dh office which are front of the house.

PiL don't lock theirs when they're in except at night. My parents do, but they're in a flat and have issues with random people getting into the block and walking around trying the doors we live in a market town, parents live in the closest city, literally down the road.

NancyJoan · 11/09/2023 21:15

Yes. I’ve never lived in a house where the front door didn’t lock when shut. I do open the back door first thing at this time of year, and leave it open while we are at home, but shut and lock it if I’m home alone, and in the evening.

FrangipaniBlue · 11/09/2023 21:16

Only when we are either out or in bed.

Back door is left stood open most of the day.

I do however have a 35kg bull terrier, so good luck to any stranger who jumps over my back garden fence or blithely walks in my front door 😂
