Hi all.

I’m so sorry but I’m purely posting here for traffic. My 15 year old son was assaulted very badly by a professional boxer (18) at the beginning of this week. He was admitted to hospital and had a CT scan to check for any obvious bleeding. Everything was ok. He was diagnosed with a severe concussion. He has lost about 2 weeks of memory and can’t remember anything at all from the day of the accident. He seemed to be improving but in the last 24hrs he seems to be deteriorating. We were given a list of red flags to look out for but none of this is on there so I don’t know if it’s ok to just keep letting him rest without taking him back to A&E?

  • It takes on average about 6 times for him to register me saying his name if I’m right next to him. He is in a complete daze.
  • He has no appetite at all and is still very nauseous.
  • He cannot sleep.
  • He cannot remember things I’ve said to him just an hour or so before.
  • He has developed intense anxiety and is very confused.
  • Things he started remembering he has now forgotten again.
  • He is very pale and lethargic.
  • He is extremely sensitive to sunlight.

I called the hospital but they wouldn’t let me speak to anyone. What do I do? Is this all normal post concussion or do I need to take him to A&E?

Please be kind. I’ve never experienced this before and I don’t know what is normal and what isn’t. Thanks so much in advance.

So not to drip feed.. yes the police are involved and we’ve done everything we have had to do so far as we know. We’ve been very vigilant and I’ve been sleeping next to him every night.

St Georges is a great hospital and have a fantastic Neuro department

3luckystars · 11/09/2023 04:32

I hope he is ok

Thank you again for all of the amazing support ❤️ really can’t thank you enough. DS is ok, he has been diagnosed with Post Concussion Syndrome. They did another CT and there is no bleeding or swelling. It’s just a very nasty concussion. I have a really good detailed report to give to the police and St George’s has referred us to the Child Brain Injury Trust who have amazing solicitors that help you with fighting for justice in cases like this and arrange all follow up appointments and therapy. I can’t praise this hospital enough! They have been amazing. Thank you for holding my hand through all of this. I’m so grateful that my boy is ok and will recover from this! We’ve just got home and going to try get some sleep. Good night all you lovely people 💐

Glad to hear everything is OK! Hope you can both get some rest now. Goodnight x

OP so sorry. My daughter got post concussion syndrome after hitting her head on ice, and it took several months to get over. Take it slowly. All the best!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 11/09/2023 04:58

An A&E doctor once said to me, that. I decent doctor is going to think badly of a parent concerned about their child's health.

I wouldn't hesitate to take him in.

EmmaEmerald · 11/09/2023 04:58

He'll be fine but it will take time. Glad he's okay xx

HollyBollyBooBoo · 11/09/2023 05:15

My gosh the poor boy, can't even imagine how awful this must be for him (and you!). Wishing him a speedy recovery x

MixedCouple · 11/09/2023 05:19

As a HPC who has Patients come into A&E at 3am with stubbed little toe or IBS often - YES take him to A&E without delay.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 11/09/2023 05:42

Thank goodness he’s no worse OP. Wishing him a speedy recovery and justice.

You did the right thing checking, you can’t be too careful with concussion. Relieved for you.

HoppingPavlova · 11/09/2023 05:54

Good to hear, and sorry this happened to your son in the first instance.

CharlieBoo · 11/09/2023 05:54

How terrifying this must’ve been for you all! So pleased he’s been seen.. St George’s are absolutely amazing.. incredible hospital.. wishing your ds a speedy recovery.

Mumof2teens79 · 11/09/2023 06:09

Sorry, late to this thread and I know you have been to A&E and come back
Did they check for infection? Where was he hit?
I am not a doctor so I don't know if they would have checked or it would be obvious from the scans?
Some of what you describe sounds more like meningitis ie infection in the brain
I had a friend who broke his nose and appeared fine but ended up with Meningitis and went downhill very rapidly, because the break allowed bacteria naturally present in his nose into his brain, which is usually protected.

Mummyoflittledragon · 11/09/2023 06:11

That sounds relatively positive even though your ds is suffering and thank goodness it isn’t more serious. I hope he gets over this soon and this assault is taken seriously by the courts and the professional boxer found guilty. He should be banned from boxing as he isn’t taking his skill and the damage he can do seriously. But I don’t think this happens.

LemonTreeSkies · 11/09/2023 06:25

.I’m glad you have answers and know what’s going on but I am angry on both your and your son’s behalf at what happened to him. I truly hope justice is served

Babygirl888 · 11/09/2023 06:25

I hit my head quite hard in June. I went to hospital and had a CT scan and all was clear. They said it was post concussion syndrome.

For weeks i mixed up my words and couldnt get them out. It was frustrating as it was on the tip of my tongue but i just coukdnt get it. I lost my balance loads and was dizzy for weeks after. My eyes were also really sensitive and still are now - they always have been quite sensitive anyway. But i couldnt believe how long it affected me for. Ive always suffered bad migraines and have been under a consultant for years but they've definitley become more frequent aswell.

So in my personal experience, my effects lasted ages too and quite similar to your sons. But if its getting worse, have him checked. Mine didnt get worse than the first day but had sypmtoms for ages. Hope he's ok x

Babygirl888 · 11/09/2023 06:27

Oh, just saw your update. Snap, he had the same as I did! Hopefully you can feel reassured and he can recover x

Babygirl888 · 11/09/2023 06:31

In a&e they gave me a medicine for my dizziness, i then got more from my GP, not sure if he has this symptom, but if he suffers this (mine lasted for a good month)
prochlorperazine was amazing, stemetil (sp) aswell x

Yoghurtpotsatdawn · 11/09/2023 06:33

You must be so relieved he has been checked over and they have re-scanned to make sure there was no swelling or bleeding. And I’m so glad you are getting help with taking legal action. As PPs have said, it can take a while to recover after severe concussion but really hope DS is soon over the worst . It must be so scary for all of you.

Iizzyb · 11/09/2023 06:37

Just came on to look for an update. So pleased to hear your news. Not sure who the solicitors are at the unit (and I don't work for any of them) but Irwin Mitchell are the best for complex personal injury claims of this type so bear them in mind and good luck to you and your son xx

FlamingoQueen · 11/09/2023 06:41

Hope you’ve managed to get some sleep and hope your son recovers well and you get justice. x

Vettrianofan · 11/09/2023 06:57

Anything neuro off to a&e

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 11/09/2023 07:00

Oh that’s a relief! Hope he recovers sooner rather than later.

MrsKarlUrban · 11/09/2023 07:06

Just woke up and came straight on to see how he is and so happy for you with your update
Best of luck in going forward 💐
