Hi all.

I’m so sorry but I’m purely posting here for traffic. My 15 year old son was assaulted very badly by a professional boxer (18) at the beginning of this week. He was admitted to hospital and had a CT scan to check for any obvious bleeding. Everything was ok. He was diagnosed with a severe concussion. He has lost about 2 weeks of memory and can’t remember anything at all from the day of the accident. He seemed to be improving but in the last 24hrs he seems to be deteriorating. We were given a list of red flags to look out for but none of this is on there so I don’t know if it’s ok to just keep letting him rest without taking him back to A&E?

  • It takes on average about 6 times for him to register me saying his name if I’m right next to him. He is in a complete daze.
  • He has no appetite at all and is still very nauseous.
  • He cannot sleep.
  • He cannot remember things I’ve said to him just an hour or so before.
  • He has developed intense anxiety and is very confused.
  • Things he started remembering he has now forgotten again.
  • He is very pale and lethargic.
  • He is extremely sensitive to sunlight.

I called the hospital but they wouldn’t let me speak to anyone. What do I do? Is this all normal post concussion or do I need to take him to A&E?

Please be kind. I’ve never experienced this before and I don’t know what is normal and what isn’t. Thanks so much in advance.

So not to drip feed.. yes the police are involved and we’ve done everything we have had to do so far as we know. We’ve been very vigilant and I’ve been sleeping next to him every night.

How is that helpful @Defiantjazz ? And op said she called the hospital and wasn't allowed to speak to anyone

Because that’s what I think she should do?
call 111 not the hospital. They can send an ambulance if they decide it’s an emergency.

fairymary87 · 10/09/2023 23:12

Hope you son is ok op

JollyHolly30 · 10/09/2023 22:59

She talked about this in her first post! Didn't you read it fully before replying?

No, I didn’t I replied immediately after reading the serious condition her son was in. The rest seemed irrelevant. However, the police will need to be informed/updated this is a very serious assault.

TheLadyofShalott1 · 10/09/2023 23:15

I have only just read your post, so I hope that you are at the hospital now. I really hope that your DS gets better very soon x

silverspider05 · 10/09/2023 23:16

I hope your son is OK op 💐

Dotcheck · 10/09/2023 23:17

I’m so sorry this has happened. Hospital is the right place, a friend’s son recently has a severe head injury caused by a RTA and he was discharged from hospital then deteriorated a week after, but is a lot better now.

Thinking of you

LadybirdStone · 10/09/2023 23:18

Well done for recognising something is wrong and asking for the reassurance you are doing the right thing. Sometimes it’s super hard when you’re panicked

Maddy70 · 10/09/2023 23:19

Sounds terrifying. He could have a bleed. I think he needs yo go to a&e. Please update best wishes

AlwaysGassing · 10/09/2023 23:21

Consultant Anaesthetist in a hospital with neurosurgery.

Straight to A&E. Now, immediately.

Needs urgent reassessment tonight.

XelaM · 10/09/2023 23:21

This is so awful 😢 finger crossed 🤞🏻 he's ok

Ivebeentogeorgia · 10/09/2023 23:24

Definitely a and e, I hope he’s ok

PleaseStopEatingMyStuff · 10/09/2023 23:25

Good luck OP. Hope he's seen soon and has a good outcome.

AbbeyGailsParty · 10/09/2023 23:26

I’m not a medic but I think any description with the word deteriorating in it is straight to A&E. Take your list in your first post with you as you’ll be stressed and might forget something.
I hope he’s ok.

Amwondering69 · 10/09/2023 23:30

Well hopefully OP is now at AE and son being assessed by the professionals 🙏

LunaTheCat · 10/09/2023 23:31

Doctor here.. take him to A and E now

olympicsrock · 10/09/2023 23:31

Another doctor
Take him back to A and E tonight. The symptoms are concerning . He needs a repeat scan
hope all ok x

MelissyMoo · 10/09/2023 23:32

Thank you all so much for your extremely helpful and kind responses. We are at A&E and have already been triaged. They’ve called for a paediatric neuro consult and he should be seen soon I hope. His pupils are reacting normally which is very reassuring. Already feel better just being here. He is resting on my lap and is definitely feeling less panicked now that he knows he will be seen soon. He has been worried too. I promise I will update you as soon as we have any news. We are at St George’s which have been fantastic with him so far. I think they have a very good neuro department? Thank you all again x

Dr here.

I'll repeat what others have said and advise A&E.

Just a note for all. Forget red flag list. If you're worried, that's enough to get reassessed.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 10/09/2023 23:34

Good luck. I’m glad you’ve taken him in. Hope he feels better soon.

Underminer · 10/09/2023 23:36

Sending lots of love.

FernFae · 10/09/2023 23:38

Sending love and hugs hope he is better soon xxxx

Paul2023 · 10/09/2023 23:46

For what it’s worth I hope he’s ok.

MrsJinglyJones · 10/09/2023 23:46

Not a medic, just wanted to send best wishes. Your poor poor son, and you. Hope he makes a full recovery soon Flowers

Pithyresponse · 10/09/2023 23:47

Really hope he's ok. I urged a friend to get checked out after a head injury in a boxing match when he was still feeling unwell and concussed after a week. He had a bleed on the brain. I don't say that to scare you, but you're doing the right thing getting him looked at again. Hope you have answers soon and that the assault is also investigated.
