Hi all.

I’m so sorry but I’m purely posting here for traffic. My 15 year old son was assaulted very badly by a professional boxer (18) at the beginning of this week. He was admitted to hospital and had a CT scan to check for any obvious bleeding. Everything was ok. He was diagnosed with a severe concussion. He has lost about 2 weeks of memory and can’t remember anything at all from the day of the accident. He seemed to be improving but in the last 24hrs he seems to be deteriorating. We were given a list of red flags to look out for but none of this is on there so I don’t know if it’s ok to just keep letting him rest without taking him back to A&E?

  • It takes on average about 6 times for him to register me saying his name if I’m right next to him. He is in a complete daze.
  • He has no appetite at all and is still very nauseous.
  • He cannot sleep.
  • He cannot remember things I’ve said to him just an hour or so before.
  • He has developed intense anxiety and is very confused.
  • Things he started remembering he has now forgotten again.
  • He is very pale and lethargic.
  • He is extremely sensitive to sunlight.

I called the hospital but they wouldn’t let me speak to anyone. What do I do? Is this all normal post concussion or do I need to take him to A&E?

Please be kind. I’ve never experienced this before and I don’t know what is normal and what isn’t. Thanks so much in advance.

So not to drip feed.. yes the police are involved and we’ve done everything we have had to do so far as we know. We’ve been very vigilant and I’ve been sleeping next to him every night.

Doctor here.

A&E.

Immediately.

Tell them exactly what you've told us, insist they assess him. It could be concussion symptoms but he definitely needs re-assessed.

Anneta · 10/09/2023 22:23

Take him to A&E quickly. I hope he’s okay.

user1471556818 · 10/09/2023 22:23

Experienced nurse here worked AE take him now . Let us know how he gets on please

MonkeyPuddle · 10/09/2023 22:24

I’m a nurse and a first aider for a rugby team. it could be post concussion syndrome but the disorientation and lethargy is ringing warning bells. I would want my child to be in a&e for full medical assessment with them knowing he has already been diagnosed with concussion.

EpiDee · 10/09/2023 22:24

I'm a medic, 100% take him to A+E, don't wait. You will be wasting nobody's time at all. Sorry to hear this, sounds awful.

Beckafett · 10/09/2023 22:24

Take him but also a word of solidarity- my partner was badly assaulted leading to severe concussion and had to go back more then once to a and e as seemed to make little progress. He's now physically fully recovered but has had to have lots of support to help him deal with what happened.
Sending kind wishes for a speedy recovery on all fronts.

BeeHappy12 · 10/09/2023 22:24

Dr here, take him in. He may need to be rescanned for a potential bleed.

PeopleAreWeird · 10/09/2023 22:25

A&E

WetBandits · 10/09/2023 22:25

Absolutely please take him in immediately. Throw a bottle of water, snacks and a phone charger in your bag and update us when you have time Flowers

tt9 · 10/09/2023 22:26

ICU doc here, take him to A&E. Sunday night is usually quiet. if you can, take him to a large hospital which has neurosurgery. e.g if you are in london: Guys/UCL/Royal Free

if you are in brum - Queen Elizabeth

stafford/Stoke - UHNS

etc etc

SleepyRich · 10/09/2023 22:26

I'm a Paramedic and not on your list, but I'd take him in.

He may well ultimately still not need treatment/be a concussion, but this could be a sign of a progressive slow bleed that can be missed on CT or new inflammation.

Don't bother with 111, you'll just be told to attend A&E but you'll only serve to delay your arrival.

Redshoeblueshoe · 10/09/2023 22:26

You are not over reacting. A and E now.

FortyFacedFuckers · 10/09/2023 22:27

Glad you are taking him in OP I hope it all goes well, what happened is truly awful

ChocHotolate · 10/09/2023 22:28

There is nothing there which meets the criteria for an urgent CT scan, and in fact the symptoms, although severe, do match the symptoms of a severe concussion quite well.
However.... never ignore your instincts and if you are worried then go back to A&E

CarPour · 10/09/2023 22:30

Take him back in

Hopefully it turns out to be concussion. But you would not be wasting anyone's time to take a child with a significant head injury back to A&E.

PoachedDregs · 10/09/2023 22:30

Your poor son. Glad to see your update, it is definitely right to get him checked. Unanimous responses here.

Mamai90 · 10/09/2023 22:30

That sounds awful Op. Your poor family.

Definitely A&E. I hope he's ok.

Please update us if you can.

Randomness12 · 10/09/2023 22:30

Certainly take him in, I hope he is ok OP.

PeopleAreWeird · 10/09/2023 22:31

@ChocHotolate Really?
a ICU doctor has said to take him to a major hospital with a neurosurgery department and several others drs, nurses and paramedics have also told her to take him to A&E !

Justhereforaibu1 · 10/09/2023 22:32

Sounds awful, keep us updated. Wishing you all the best.

Hollyppp · 10/09/2023 22:32

Agree with everyone else A&E

MrsKarlUrban · 10/09/2023 22:33

Oh I do hope all is ok
💐 xxxx

Ginburee · 10/09/2023 22:33

Go back ASAP (nurse).

Ketzele · 10/09/2023 22:34

I'll be thinking of you and your lad, OP. Hope you get reassurance at A&E.

Overthinkingperhaps · 10/09/2023 22:34

Don't take him to Queen Elizabeth if you're in Birmingham they don't do paeds and will transfer him to Birmingham Children's.
Go straight there.

And he does meet criteria for another urgent CT scan.
Amnesia
Change in personality (anxiety, confusion etc)
Photophobia

Take him tonight.
