Hi all.

I’m so sorry but I’m purely posting here for traffic. My 15 year old son was assaulted very badly by a professional boxer (18) at the beginning of this week. He was admitted to hospital and had a CT scan to check for any obvious bleeding. Everything was ok. He was diagnosed with a severe concussion. He has lost about 2 weeks of memory and can’t remember anything at all from the day of the accident. He seemed to be improving but in the last 24hrs he seems to be deteriorating. We were given a list of red flags to look out for but none of this is on there so I don’t know if it’s ok to just keep letting him rest without taking him back to A&E?

  • It takes on average about 6 times for him to register me saying his name if I’m right next to him. He is in a complete daze.
  • He has no appetite at all and is still very nauseous.
  • He cannot sleep.
  • He cannot remember things I’ve said to him just an hour or so before.
  • He has developed intense anxiety and is very confused.
  • Things he started remembering he has now forgotten again.
  • He is very pale and lethargic.
  • He is extremely sensitive to sunlight.

I called the hospital but they wouldn’t let me speak to anyone. What do I do? Is this all normal post concussion or do I need to take him to A&E?

Please be kind. I’ve never experienced this before and I don’t know what is normal and what isn’t. Thanks so much in advance.

So not to drip feed.. yes the police are involved and we’ve done everything we have had to do so far as we know. We’ve been very vigilant and I’ve been sleeping next to him every night.

So glad your DS had positive news and the hospital have been so helpful. Best of luck

DontBeAPrickDarren · 11/09/2023 07:11

DH suffered a concussion earlier this year and it’s taken a good 3 months for him to get back to some semblance of normal, he’s only just returning to work full time so be prepared for a bit of a road to recovery.

AbbeyGailsParty · 11/09/2023 07:14

That’s good news but it sounds an awful injury, your poor son. I hope the courts come down on his attacker hard.

JoanThursday · 11/09/2023 07:18

Oh your poor son. Am pleased he's been seen and that's hes going to be okay.

My DH had post concussion syndrome after being hit by a car while on his bike. He had exactly the same symptoms as your son and he had the same sort of delay too. He really wasn't himself which was concerning from our point of view.

It did take a couple of months to get back normal but he got there in the end. He's fine now. What a worry ... sending gentle hugs.

RampantIvy · 11/09/2023 07:24

Glad to read your update @MelissyMoo. St George's is truly amazing. They saved a close family member's life when she had an aneurism. The care she received in the Atkinson Morley wing was truly excellent.

What a horrible situation for you all. I hope the perpetrator is appropriately dealt with and that your son makes a speedy and complete recovery Flowers

Oioicaptain · 11/09/2023 07:32

So glad to hear that he's not physically deteriorated. I had to get up and check for an update, so thanks. Such a worry for you both. Good that you have been referred for follow up therapy. I really really hope that it all goes well with any future court cases and that justice is actually served.

That sounds relatively positive even though your ds is suffering and thank goodness it isn’t more serious. I hope he gets over this soon and this assault is taken seriously by the courts and the professional boxer found guilty. He should be banned from boxing as he isn’t taking his skill and the damage he can do seriously. But I don’t think this happens.

Edited

Boxers do get banned: the British Board of Boxing Control can (and do) revoke their licences.

So glad you got reassuring news, @MelissyMoo , and I hope your poor lad makes a speedy recovery. And thanks for taking the trouble to update on here.

This is such an appalling thing to happen. I hope the thug that did this gets prosecuted and that he gets a really stiff sentence.

God, how awful OP. Your poor DS. I have a 15-year-old boy too and this is such a horrible thing to happen. I'm so glad he was seen and seems to be no worse than he was before. I hope he recovers fully and well and that the fucking arsehole who attacked him goes to prison Flowers

HangerLaneGyratorySystem · 11/09/2023 08:05

CBIT are amazing you will get a support worker - at 15 he’s going to need help at school and CBIT can advise on that too.

SkinnyMalinkyLankyLegs · 11/09/2023 08:10

I'm glad your son is doing OK. If you have any more concerns at all, please go to the GP or A&E. A&E probably best as they can access specialists straight away. Have the hospital said who to contact in case of any more issues?

I'm a nurse (mental health, not the kind that would be any use to you in this situation!) but in a case like this, if a parent had a genuine concern then I would in no way feel like they were bothering me.

user1471556818 · 11/09/2023 08:11

Thank you for the update glad he is OK. Please follow up on criminal charges .He could have killed your son

JFDIYOLO · 11/09/2023 08:32

Oh well done OP! You must both be feeling so much better to know this 💐

Sounds like the report will be valuable extra content for your case.

All the best for a full recovery for DS and the right outcome for the case 🤗

Towelin · 11/09/2023 08:37

I'm so sorry to read what you and your son are going through. It sounds horrendous. Really pleased that you've managed to get him checked out though and that things are 'OK' as far as expected symptoms go from this kind of injury. Hope he turns a corner soon.

Hollywolly1 · 11/09/2023 08:43

It has been a frightening time for your family, wishing your son a speedy recovery 🌻

Purplebunnie · 11/09/2023 08:54

Glad to read your update. Hope you and your son have had some good sleep and that he starts to feel better soon

weirdoboelady · 11/09/2023 09:15

So glad to read your update. Good luck with the legal matters, and yes, CBIT are great!

ICanBuyMyOwnBooks · 11/09/2023 09:20

I'm glad he's ok OP. My DB had severe PCS. You may need some support too. It can be stressful and unsettling for people around them just because recovery isn't linear. Take care of yourself too. And I hope your DS starts to feel better soon and that the case goes well Flowers

Theseventhmagpie · 11/09/2023 09:20

Straight back to A and E and make an almighty bloody pain in the arse of yourself to make sure he assessed by someone at consultant level. If still in any doubt about what’s wrong insist on a second opinion.
Sending a hug.

RampantIvy · 11/09/2023 09:30

The OP has updated @Theseventhmagpie

Gillbil · 11/09/2023 09:37

So glad he's getting the right support. Sending hugs 🌺

housethatbuiltme · 11/09/2023 09:45

My DD was just in for a head injury and confusion/dazed, not sleeping and no appetite where the signs we where told to look out for.

whitebreadjamsandwich · 11/09/2023 10:00

Poor lad. Good he's been seen and he's 'ok'. Awful thing to have happened to him. Lots and lots of rest for the next few weeks

endofthelinefinally · 11/09/2023 10:07

One of my DC had concussion after head injury. It took 5 months to get well enough to go back to school full time. Just to prepare you but reassure you that he will get there. Flowers

Grmumpy · 11/09/2023 10:15

Your good news in the face of a horrible situation is lovely. I hope your son is soon back to good health and that he gets some help dealing with the emotional trauma.
