Hi all.

I’m so sorry but I’m purely posting here for traffic. My 15 year old son was assaulted very badly by a professional boxer (18) at the beginning of this week. He was admitted to hospital and had a CT scan to check for any obvious bleeding. Everything was ok. He was diagnosed with a severe concussion. He has lost about 2 weeks of memory and can’t remember anything at all from the day of the accident. He seemed to be improving but in the last 24hrs he seems to be deteriorating. We were given a list of red flags to look out for but none of this is on there so I don’t know if it’s ok to just keep letting him rest without taking him back to A&E?

  • It takes on average about 6 times for him to register me saying his name if I’m right next to him. He is in a complete daze.
  • He has no appetite at all and is still very nauseous.
  • He cannot sleep.
  • He cannot remember things I’ve said to him just an hour or so before.
  • He has developed intense anxiety and is very confused.
  • Things he started remembering he has now forgotten again.
  • He is very pale and lethargic.
  • He is extremely sensitive to sunlight.

I called the hospital but they wouldn’t let me speak to anyone. What do I do? Is this all normal post concussion or do I need to take him to A&E?

Please be kind. I’ve never experienced this before and I don’t know what is normal and what isn’t. Thanks so much in advance.

So not to drip feed.. yes the police are involved and we’ve done everything we have had to do so far as we know. We’ve been very vigilant and I’ve been sleeping next to him every night.

Not a doctor and you're obviously already going to A&E but just my 2 cents as someone who's had more than my fair share of concussions - feedback from doctors has always pretty much been that any concerns with your head / concussion are always worth seeing a medical professional. I got more GP appointments in the weeks after my worse concussion than I'd ever had in my life because they wanted to ensure I was okay.

Never mess around with head injuries - bless your poor son, it sounds like a horrible situation for all of you

Namechange285 · 10/09/2023 22:34

Agree with pps, take him back to A&E and also agree with the advice to go to an A&E of a hospital with a neurosurgery dept if this is feasible. If, god forbid, he does have a bleed he'll then be in the right place to receive treatment asap. Sorry you're in such a horrible situation

Doctor here.

A&E.

Immediately.

Tell them exactly what you've told us, insist they assess him. It could be concussion symptoms but he definitely needs re-assessed.

I’m no medic but you have the advice here.

Don’t second guess yourself.
Look after your son & get him to a&e.

Please make sure you don’t leave until you feel he had been fully REASSESSED & not just a look at the prior notes. If you must insist on seeing a consultant - then do. If it comes to it, log every interaction and explain to them what you feel your / his situation is and contact PALS (do tell them you his is your intention).

I’m not one to seek out a doctor generally, but your son needs professional assessment and advice.

If all this thread does is give you the confidence to do what your instincts were telling you i.e. get him seen by a doctor - then it has done a good job!

Wishing you and him all the very best.
Hoping for a speedy recovery for your son!

All the best.

CockSpadget · 10/09/2023 22:35

He absolutely DOES meet the criteria! Hope he’s seen and sorted quickly OP 🤞🤞🤞

ReadingSoManyThreads · 10/09/2023 22:37

I know from my own concussion that I suffered that the light sensitivity is normal, this carried on for a few weeks with me. In terms of all of the others, as he's deteriorated, I'd definitely take him back to A&E, just in case. I hope he's ok.

Cherrylily7 · 10/09/2023 22:37

Retired nurse
Go straight to a and e and do not be put off
Insist he is seen and scanned and get a second opinion if you still aren't happy

stayclosetoyourself · 10/09/2023 22:38

Medical doctor
He needs to be seen in AE straight away due to deteriorating conscious level
It could be a subdural or subacute bleed

Bored1000 · 10/09/2023 22:39

Hope he is ok, poor lad❤️
A&E definitely

paddyclampofthethirdkind · 10/09/2023 22:40

A&E - hopefully you’re already there, OP.

Hope he’s ok, let us know!

WhycantIkeepthisbloodyplantalive · 10/09/2023 22:40

Hi, I'm an emergency response nurse, if this was my patient I would be sending them to A&E straight away.

All the best.

Gnomegnomegnome · 10/09/2023 22:40

I’m a nurse and also a pro at getting concussion.
I’m glad that you are taking him in. Hope he (and you!) are okay.

Shutuptrevor · 10/09/2023 22:41

Ex nurse here and I’d also say that deterioration warrants a recheck. Hope you’re already there.

oioicheeky · 10/09/2023 22:41

Thinking of you and your boy....hopefully he gets seen quickly xx

SM4713 · 10/09/2023 22:43

To echo others- A&E now!

You are NOT wasting anyones time OP. I worked in A&E for years- and you and your son are not time wasters at all! Please update how he gets on ❤

ImWally6 · 10/09/2023 22:43

So sorry. Hope all is OK. Definitely hosp.

Malificent1 · 10/09/2023 22:44

Poor lad, hope he’s okay. I echo everyone else, take him back to A&E. Hope you’re okay too OP, what a terrible shock it must have been.

ClairDeLaLune · 10/09/2023 22:45

MelissyMoo · 10/09/2023 22:22

Thank you all so much! This is very reassuring. I don’t want to waste anyone’s time or resources so it’s good to know that others would do the same as I want to do. Thank you ❤️

OP that’s very sweet of you to worry about time and resources but you wouldn’t be wasting either, please just take him to A&E now. I’m sorry this has happened to him.

mamatoTails · 10/09/2023 22:45

How worrying for you OP, I hope everything is ok.

ElizabethBest · 10/09/2023 22:46

It sounds like post-concussion syndrome but definitely take him to A&E to check - this is not an area worth messing about with.

I had it when I was about his age after a nasty fall from a horse and it was AWFUL.

PonyPatter44 · 10/09/2023 22:47

Stop faffing on Mumsnet, and go hospital tonight. Fingers crossed he is OK.

Lastchancechica · 10/09/2023 22:47

I hope he is okay op- he needs to be in hospital.

Have the police been informed? I so sorry for your son.

Balloonsandroses · 10/09/2023 22:48

GP. Just to echo everyone else, A+E - if I spoke to you on the phone I’d advise A+E rather than even seeing him in GP.

Amwondering69 · 10/09/2023 22:48

So hopefully you have taken advice and son now in AE . Hope your son is ok and now being assessed .X

DyslexicPoster · 10/09/2023 22:49

Poor kid. I hope you get seen ASAP. Pack a phone lead and power bank if you can and a hoodie to roll up in case it's a long night if you haven't yet left, which I'm sure you have

AnneValentine · 10/09/2023 22:49

At an extreme minimum I would ring 111 but really I would be going straight to A&E.
